Synth Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 I have two guitars, both have Single coil pick ups. One of the guitars I use just use for spair parts for the other. I want to take the pick ups from that guitar and put them togather to create humbuckers. The pickups arn't that great, but I want to use this as a test. I'm sure someone has tried this befor, but I can't find any information about it. Anyone have any ideas? Quote
Compyfox Posted April 6, 2006 Posted April 6, 2006 Humbucker coils are coils where one is winded up to create a "negative" polarisation, and the other "positive polarisation". At least in the theory. So using 2 normal coils wouldn't work. Not to mention that you'd make the coil slots bigger (with a mills or something) to fit a humbucker in it. Too much work and a lot can go wrong. I wanted to do this with my guitar too (instead of having a single coil at the fretboard a humbucker), but my befriended guitar players all didn't recommend that and said "get a real humbucker instead". It's up to you. Quote
Sixto Posted April 7, 2006 Posted April 7, 2006 I've never even heard of anyome suggesting such a thing...I doubt it can even be done. You want to cancel hum? Activate two single coil pickups. You want a humbucking sound? Get a good humbucker. For Strats with single coil slots, you can't go wrong with Seymour Duncan Hot Rails. Quote

SnappleMan Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 not only are hot rails quieter than most traditional humbuckers but they're also EXTREMELY high output. This makes them wonderful pickups. I had one in the neck position of my EVH custom strat, and I can't tell you what a badass tone I got. Unlike anything else I've ever used. Great for fingertapping too! Quote
k u n g f u c h i c k e n Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 Snap, while we are on the subject, I modded my normal humbucker already, but how would that hotrails sound in the neck position? EDIT - oops, i missed where you said "neck" lol. I will most DEF be getting one. They are inexpensive too! Quote
Synth Posted April 10, 2006 Author Posted April 10, 2006 Ok, so I can't turn two single coils into a humbucker, but if I put two togather, would it even work? I wanna experment with pickups to get my own custom tone. Quote
Sixto Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Your custom tone would sound like crap if you tried that, trust me. Not worth the effort. Just buy a decent humbucker. Quote
