djpretzel
Hi I'm Chris Hammond (real name and remixer name). I made this remix of the prelude from Final Fantasy VII. It was already a cool song, but quite sad so I made it funky and ambient. It wasn't as easy as my piano pieces because those are just a case of record as I play. I've attempted to tag it, but found it difficult...I think most of it's ok. Here's the link: cheers, chris
The Orichalcon
Source: http://www.zophar.net/psf/FF7_psf.rar - 101 The Prelude This one is specifically a remix of the Prelude from FF7, so I've changed the title to reflect that. I'm not entirely sure that Prelude mixes are allowed, but I'll vote anyway. Ok, first 30 seconds and all I'm hearing is the source + drums. Maybe it will build somewhere. Got a little breakbeat leading into a section after :50. Now we have the flute melody from the source played over drumsbeats and pads. The beats build up. But the melody is 100% conservative cover of the original. Nothing new here, just a rather enjoyable rehash with drums over the top. The ending is identical to the source, but for some reason just cuts out around 2:36 with no final resolution. OCR Guidelines]In terms of arrangement - how close or distant ReMixes should be to the original - the general rule is that the ReMix should be YOURS. We don't just mean that you were involved in its creation, but that it is different enough from the original so as to readily illustrate the contributions, modifications, and enhancements you have made. In other words, don't just take the original and drop a few drum loops on top. Also, don't simply take a MIDI file and assign new instruments to the parts, or add reverb, and expect that to pass as 'yours'. When we say 'ReMix', we actually mean something closer to 're-arrangement', if that helps clarify. If you listen to most of the pieces on the site and compare them to the originals, you should get an idea of what a ReMix is. Changing a piece's genre, adding original passages, solos, harmonies, and counter-melodies, as well as altering instrumentation, dynamics, and tempo are all ways of making a ReMix your own unique creation, and are techniques best used in conjunction. With that being said though, there's not a great deal you can do with the prelude. Nobuo himself goes to great lengths to make it sound different in each game, and the prelude in FFX is probably the best example of how it can be remixed into a proper tune. Either way this is a direct cover of the source (and I'm being kind in saying that) so this is an auto-reject. NO OVERRIDE (Also, if any judges want to confirm this, the file on the FTP is missing the last 20 seconds.)
Liontamer
Well, I thought there were some decent ideas here in terms of the instrumentation and trying to expand the original, enough so that I wouldn't have overriden it. But basically covering the Prelude with new instruments plus some simple beats/drumloops doesn't really cut it, so I'll vouch for it. You've gotta present something more interpretive and personalized, not a ~2:30-long cover. If it's going more of the cover route, you have to get more creative with expanding the instrumentation involved and writing new parts.
