Liontamer Posted November 11, 2024 Posted November 11, 2024 Artist Name: RebeccaETripp For many, the first moments of entering the Dark World in Link to the Past were nothing short of astonishing. I wanted to recapture something of the mystery, danger, adventure, vulnerability, and promise of renewal found only within the otherworld. Games & Sources Link to the Past - Silly Pink Rabbit aka Bunny
Liontamer Posted November 11, 2024 Author Posted November 11, 2024 Theme kicks in at :28 after an original extended intro. Nicely expanded into light orchestration with lots of ornamentation. Nice turn at 1:11 just varying the instrumentation of the theme and then weaving it with other original writing dancing around it. Good switch at 1:32 into the strings handling the lead (note transition from 1:51-1:52 exposed the sample, but it's an overall solid sound given some reasonable body). Dropoff at 2:00, then "Song of Healing" showed up for a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo from 2:09-2:16 before shifting back into the main source for further variations accented by denser strings underneath adding more tension. As always, Rebecca nicely presents loads of textural variations to play around with the source material, and it's a tried and true tactic for an engaging arrangement that lets you witness and subsequently enjoy the versatility of a VGM theme. Strong as always! YES
Hemophiliac Posted November 11, 2024 Posted November 11, 2024 Link to the Past?! Let's go! Turned into a bunny is definitely one of the strangest pieces on the OST, carrying some amount of wonder, innocence, and a hint of darkness to it. I feel like this tapped into the wonder and innocence but added some silliness to the fold. Arrangement is very solid taking us through the short source with many variations, mostly with texture change through instrumentation swapping. The short appearance of "Song of Healing" could almost be a way to imply turning back into human form, clever idea! Less than seven seconds later, we've stepped back onto the dark world portal tile and have turned into a bunny again. The panning was very wide at times, and I'm not sure what the ambience at very end was supposed to represent, but those weren't major issues or reasons why this shouldn't pass. Fun, glad to hear an under represented tune tackled. YES
prophetik music Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 really need compression on this track. modern classical works use compression to handle highs/lows regularly in studio recordings. the dynamic range is just too dramatic. opening is really sparse, more so than i expected. it's more cinematic than i think we've heard in the past from rebecca. when the melodic material comes in at 0:28, it felt very FFXII-esque to me - there's a few parts of that soundtrack that have similar scoring. agree with hemo the panning's too much. the sound field is way too wide. the constant running eighth notes are a nice reference, and i really like the eventual tambourine that's added in, very fitting from a scoring perspective. the outro is light and nicely handled. this is another rebecca track - similar soundscape as prior tracks, similar method of expansion of the original, similar technical issues. i liked the addition of brass this time around, and this type of original is more fitting to your scoring style, i think, than some other recent submissions. i'd have loved to see more expansion - branching into a less rhythmic direction, for example, or picking out some of the smaller elements of the track and exploring them without the running rhythmic element to pin it together. but what's here is fine and definitely above our bar.
