prophetik music ⚖️ Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Collabers: TheManPF (on guitars). Hey! Another DoD month means yet another submission by me! This time, the theme was Super Smash Bros. which meant that any franchise featured in Smash was eligible. Hilariously, this left out Chrono Trigger but left in Undertale, which was just too tempting to ignore. The soundtrack to Undertale is full of great tracks so picking one is always tough but I figured I could do fun stuff with the chaotic "Your Best Nightmare", one of the final boss themes (vs. Omega Flowey), so I picked that one. PF then suggested adding "Finale" as that track also plays during said boss battle so I took the suggestion and this ended with 2 sources! "Your Best Nightmare" is a wonderfully chaotic track, changing genres and moods often and I tried to keep that on my cover. The idea of the Omega Flowey battle is that it begins as an unwinnable chaos but eventually turns around into a hype victory lap with "Finale". That idea guided my remix (a little similar in concept to what I did with Secret of Mana's "Danger" at the beginning of 2024), so it starts with all the chaos from "Your Best Nightmare" before slowly transitioning into the hype of "Finale", with some cameos of the "healing jingle" in between. Anyway, I'll try to do a breakdown as the source is notoriously chaotic: 0:00-0:36: This entire section is a play on YBN ("Your Best Nightmare")'s intro, featuring the same weird chord progression while Flowey's theme plays on chiptune. It ends with Flowey's laugh, just like in the game. 0:36-1:26: This section plays with the main bass riff of YBN (begins at 0:22 in the YT link) plus the same chord progression. A variation of the chord progression follows with Flowey's theme on synths. Just like in the original, there are "abrupt" transitions using a noise SFX. 1:26-1:45: This is a variation over a section from YBN (begins at 1:10 in the YT link), changing the chord progression and meter from 4/4 to 7/8. 1:45-2:17: A variation over the following section from YBN (at 1:27), with the main bass riff first on keys and then on guitars for a very heavy section. The "melody" from that section is played on a whistle-ish synth and then is used as a riff to close the section with another noise transition. 2:17-2:54: This part combines 2 sections from YBN, the guitar doing repeated A notes (from 2:12) and the "harpsichord" riff (plays on bass at 3:12). Flowey's melody returns once again as a guitar-synth duo. 2:54-3:00: This is the "healing jingle", with some healing SFX from the game. Flowey's laughs acts as a transition to... 3:00-3:21: Heavy section based on 2:29 from YBN. 3:21-4:10: As a transition I used the bass line from the source's 1:56, which leads to a bass playing E-F "arpeggios", a variation over the source's 2:55. Here I changed it up a bit more since the source plays E minor and F major but I went with E major and F major for that "spanish" sound, hence the acoustic guitars. After a nice solo by PF we repeat the riffs from 1:45-2:17. 4:10-4:30: Healing jingle repeated and expanded. There's a low drum behind that in my eyes represents a hearbeat that's slowly relaxing. 4:30-6:09: All of this comes from Finale. The healing jingle ends with a Bb Maj 7 chord, so I let it ring for a bit before settling on a Bb Min chord (I love those major to minor chord progressions hehe). From there we basically get the following: first the B melody from finale on piano, then the A melody on a guitar/synth duo, then the B melody again on trumpet and then the C part (a variation of A) on guitar/synth duo again. 6:09-end: To end the song, there's a reprise of Flowey's theme on piano while a combo of brass and bells reprises the weird chord progression from the intro. Hope you enjoy! Games & Sources Game: Undertale Sources: "Your Best Nightmare" and "Finale" Healing jingle (not in the OST as far as I know):
prophetik music ⚖️ Posted January 14 Author Posted January 14 ok, the happy chip opening combined with PF playing something evil on guitars made me laugh. there's that terrible laugh and then the only real thing you can pull out of the heavy section of YBN is in the guitars. this is fantastic, the intensity is very DTesque and the weird synth lead over it fits right in. there's another slam transition at 1:26 for the bridge in YBN, and we get a bit of math rock for a second before triplets in the hats which i love the feel of. 2:18's a notable shift in style, and admittedly while the rest of the track's felt pretty cohesive despite the nonsensical chord progressions, this transition didn't feel as contiguous. there's several more fun weird sections (i felt the drums in the section starting at 2:17 were a bit less intense than i'd hoped), and then at 3:21 we get a notable stylistic shift focusing more on a traditional i-II phrygian progression. this is a neat evolution of the feel that's been going on throughout. there's a hard transition at 4:10 for the healing jingle section, and the feel here shifts to a much more relaxed vibe for a bit. 5:02 is where it finally takes off and gives us a victory-lap feel for the next minute or so. i liked the extra bars in the lead at 6:07. there's a resolution with the finale melody line right at the end, and we're done. as expected, this is outrageously entertaining as a listen. tons of variety in the approach, oodles of source, and both alphabetically-defined musicians are in peak form. excellent work. YES
Liontamer ⚖️ Posted April 3 Posted April 3 Right from the rip, it sounds like it'll be good. Guitars at :37 are nice and menacing and the texture, though cramped, sounds totally purposeful (and more importantly, clear enough despite the volume). So subtle, but the static fizz at 2:18 as a pause/transition was a nice touch. Good cameo of the healing theme at 2:53, a VERY brief moment of respite. ¡Olé! at 3:23! :-D More healing at 4:10 was a cool touch, and I liked the kicks feeling like a heartbeat until 4:29; beautiful transition into TheManPF's guitar underneath the lead, by the way. Energy picked back up at 5:02 and was sounded crowded again until the finish at 6:25, but I'll live. Great source tune choices; that theme's STRESSFUL. Diggin' it! :-) YES
Hemophiliac ⚖️ Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Expecting greatness, and i'm not disappointed...it's jnWake! Some proggy goodness with a very silly and wacky source tune this time. Something about this mixdown isn't as clean as your usual work for some reason, but it's still very well produced without any specific production issues catching my ear. The 4:10 transition was abrupt but not so shocking after everything proceding. I liked the use of the static as a transition as a direct carry over from the "Your Best Nightmare" source. I would not have considered doing that and it's a nice tie in even thought it's subtle and a good way to suddenly transition. Speaking of source usage, it's well represented; absolutely love the chopped usage of the sources and appreciated the breakdown. Great work from both of you! YES
