I'm back!  And this one is actually a new* song!

*technically it is from Meat and Potatoes compo from 12 years ago.  So way too conservative to submit to OCR as-is, but at the time I thought the idea had some real merit to it and always wanted to rizz it up to submit here.  But life gets in the way, and I guess if at first you don't succeed wait a decade+ and try again.    So even though the general idea was really old this was a complete tear down and redo as far as arrangement and mix goes.  It's kinda similar to my Terra of the Bells or Kingdom of Magic tracks as in... like... new-agey instruments and textures, but with beats?  Is that actually a genre?  I have real trouble with genres so to me this feels natural but maybe is strange.  But that's what I love about OCR, it lets me waffle stylistically and not commit to anything!

Chrono Trigger - Peaceful Days

classic original. such a simple but beautiful melody.

long-evolving opening pad - eventually it opens up and we get some other synths as well. melody comes in at 0:23 with some nice wind chimes. flute is right on the edge of uncanny valley, but what it's doing is nice. as the chords move faster (at about 0:48) there's a bit of overlap in the backing pad. this is pretty conservative through the first minute.

we get a beat at 0:56 and a bunch of filtered elements that open over time, and some personalization of the melodic material near the end of this section. at 1:36 the mix feels like it's finally arrived - there's a snappy beat, the first bass instrument, and a more personalized melodic line.

2:10 goes right into the fourth repetition of the melodic line - this may have been an opportunity to mix it up by having a bit of space before diving back in. still, what's here is nice, and i liked the measure in the middle where the backing elements drop. i also like the bagpipes that come in near the end of this section.

we get a subtractive version of the melodic line after this, in what is clearly some falling action. there's a bit of a settled last chord, and it's done. i wouldn't have minded if that chord had lasted an extra second or two to help it feel more settled.

this is short and sweet, pretty straightforward but featuring some nice ideas. i think the opening's a little long and i'd have liked to hear some breaks from the melodic material in the middle somewhere, but what's here is over the bar and fulfills our criteria. welcome back argle =)

Great source tune choice with a very meat & potatoes approach, but as that compo has proved time and time again, there's more to interpretation with an arrangement beyond melodic changes. Smooth instrumentation choices throughout that certainly stood apart from the original song (though briefly exposing the blocky piano sample at 2:20 I could have done without). Everything flowed nicely, and the textural change-up at 2:49 was a thing of beauty. Sufficiently rizzed fo' shizz, so the call was easy peasy. :-)

A simple arrangement that checks all the boxes for sure. Meat and potatoes is tried and true for a reason :)

I would have loved it if you found a flute player within our community for the intro and the middle section - I am sure there are plenty ready to help and it's a beautiful line that's just a bit stale for my tastes as an instrumentalist, but definitely passable.

Mixing is on point, everything seems to be in its right place, everything is loud enough. Can't really critique much of what's going on here.

I think the piano is a little hammery at 2:15- but only in certain notes. I would try to moderate the velocity changes so it doesn't sound like some of the piano lead notes are explosive. A nitpick, for sure.
