Prasa_U.
Title in the works. Trying to go for a cinematic feel, much like Syberia itself. This is only the first 1 minute and 10 seconds. Keeping it simple for the beginning. Brief solo cello, then some buildup, the main theme is stated vanilla once, then after a timpano roll, repeated with a slight variation of mine, track ends. Planning to play around with the theme after that (a more sad minor version of the theme as the middle of the piece), and then a return at the end. You may have to turn your speakers up. chrono26
wow this is pretty cool. i havnt heard the original, so i'm not sure how it compares, but this is good stuff here. the samples sound great too. seems like you're off to a good start. Chickenwarlord
Holy Crap! Somebody remixing an adventure game by Sokal? Inconceivable! Work on making that harp a little more believable. Right now it souns like it was ripped straight from LOOM. Other than that, I'd have to say its great. Still has the feeling of the original. Definitely keep on working on this. And for godsakes, make it longer and more epic.
Prasa_U.
Thank you for the comments. Holy Crap! Somebody remixing an adventure game by Sokal? Inconceivable! They're pretty much the only thing I play nowadays anyways. Doesn't hurt that the music is nice. And for godsakes, make it longer and more epic. That was my plan, good sir. I agree the harp sounds a bit out of place. Will try to fix that in the future.
Ronyn
This sounds similar in style to The Elder Scrolls, nice. I like the expressive samples, but with expression you should be careful not to interrupt the envelopes too much; it can sound like hiccups. Try editing them or possibly slowing the tempo a little to let the expression out.
Prasa_U.
Update No.1 http://www.honeyandclover.net/newnew.mp3 Excuse sloppiness in some parts.
Chickenwarlord
Much better with the integration of the harp this time. I would guess the 'sloppiness' would be the flute not blending with the excellent soundscape that you've created. I'll definitely be watching (or listening to, as the case stands) this. Do you mean the fast flute runs at the end there? Yeah, those sound a bit akward don't they.
Chickenwarlord
You'd better work on this once you have access to the source again.
Prasa_U.
You'd better work on this once you have access to the source again. Yes sir! _______________________ Update No #2 _______________________ -> 3:16 minutes -> We're now into the middle portion where a secondary theme from Syberia appears. (it's one of the themes during travelling) -> Change of key to A-Minor, change of time to 4/4 http://www.honeyandclover.net/update2.mp3
Chickenwarlord
Most of these gripes are minor and I'm only making them because I want this to be perfect for submission. I want to see something from Syberia posted. Harp still needs a little work on the blending. 1:03-7 sounds fairly cluttered and a little too muddy. 2:15-17 that buildup in the percussion is a little to gradual, but this is more of 'my preference' than an actual problem. 2:23 - entering instrument doesn't do so seamlessly. Maybe work a little more on this entrance. 2:30 and on. Background parts seem ever so slightly off. I don't think they'll NO you for this, but it would be good to just polish them up a bit (I wish I had your talent). Your file is already 6mb and as such, will have to go through some compression if you want it hosted here.
The Instrumental Light
great mix! this sounds like a track from a lighthearted part of a movie. i cant think of anything to improve, this would at least get to the panel, if not get passed. outstanding job! Prasa_U.
Chickenwarlord, you don't need to write a disclaimer before writing criticism, that's why I post it here. But when you say "background parts are off" from 2:30 onwards, do you mean they are off in terms of tempo?
Chickenwarlord
At one point they felt a little behind in terms of tempo, but most of the 'off' sound is the mastering. Just a little more tweaking should be a good fix. I wouldn't have heard it if I had just been listening for enjoyment, so it's a minor issue. Prasa_U.
Some more ideas, but I wimped out and decided I would work on the climax of the piece next time: http://www.honeyandclover.net/updateno3.mp3
Prasa_U.
So is there a lack of orchestral fans here or is my piece just bad?
Chickenwarlord
I suspect it is not a lack of orchestral fans, but rather a lack of Syberia fans. And the piece is coming along quite nicely. Still might want to work on cutting the filesize down.
Villainelle
Don't know the source, but this is gorgeous! Very expressive, wonderfully paced...just great. All I can suggest is on the production end...transients are not very clear and the overall definition of instruments is on the muddy side. Specifically I'm thinking of the clarity and power in Jared Hudson's mixes--are you familiar with them? But perhaps production is something you're leaving until the arrangement is finished. Anyway, great stuff here.
Prasa_U.
Still might want to work on cutting the filesize down Yeah, I haven't really done anything on that end because it's in progress but that will definitely be cut down when I'm done. All I can suggest is on the production end...transients are not very clear and the overall definition of instruments is on the muddy side. Specifically I'm thinking of the clarity and power in Jared Hudson's mixes--are you familiar with them? But perhaps production is something you're leaving until the arrangement is finished. I've always been a bit hazy with the production side of the things. I suppose it's something I'll really have to try and work on if it's a notable issue. avaris
I'd say go for it, this is awesome. The only I could is maybe a more climatic section added on to the one you alreadu got. But the whole serene feel to this might be ruined. Which, IMO, is the best part about this mix. 4:40 it feels like the jump in volume feeling is a lil too sudden. The judges might get you for over using the cymnals alot. I friggin love that opening cello and want to make sweet love to it.
Chickenwarlord
Once again, before you submit, you're going to have to compress in some way. Otherwise, I'd go for it. Arrangement is definitely above the bar. Mastering, while not perfect I think is passable. I'd say go ahead and submit this one.
