prophetik music ⚖️ Posted October 14 Posted October 14 5db of headroom. opens with the typical kit for this style of music, and the melody's represented first in a void and then with some other elements alongside it. sounds like there's a bit of sampled audio at 1:03 for a few seconds. the whole thing finally comes together at 1:06, and it's a solid core (although the synth that's constantly opening the filter every four beats is annoying). the melody here's actually pretty far back initially but comes in halfway through the chorus section. there's the bridge chords right after this, and there's no obvious melodic material here although the chord change is nice. there's a big drop at 2:10, and some exploration of the middle third of the original. the shift at 2:32 is pretty noticeable, and this kind of explores a variety of backing elements with the main melodic snippet over top for a while. there's another drop and build starting at 3:50, and the shift into the more acid style is obvious by the acid bassline that gets layered on top of the main set of melodic and harmonic elements from 1:06. as far as i can tell, that's the only difference - the rest sounds like copy/paste. there's a drop at 5:12, and we go back to a recap of the opening section as an outro. this is pretty straightforward and linear, and then it's done. this is a pretty safe arrangement overall. i think that the copy/paste in the last third is a little disappointing, and i'd have loved to hear a more unique soundscape there that fits more with the bass synth. i don't want to overlook the exploration in the middle third though which i liked and thought was pretty deep for a house track. i also think that overall the track sounds good - the mix is solid and everything speaks in a balanced way. i think this is probably over the bar but i'm interested to hear what my fellow judges will say. Liontamer ⚖️ Posted October 23 Author Posted October 23 The way to my heart is house. :-) This deal is thumpin’ and bumpin’! Around 2:48 seemed to be a handoff from LANparty to Theology with the backing going to a different style. To me, that section felt less cohesive, though the chorus section at 3:50 was more unified and then the rest of the presentation was on solid ground. Would have liked more variation melodically or sonically with the lead, though I realize that wouldn’t fit with the gimmick of having the same lead then having different sets of accompaniment/backing, so it is what it is. This one’s an example where the interpretation comes more from the textures and what’s surrounding the melody, which is totally valid (and it’s not like the melody on piano has 0 interpretation, it was just more limited/repetitive). Nice job beefing up your collaborative take on this. :-) YES
jnWake ⚖️ Posted October 24 Posted October 24 Generation IV has such good music... Anyway, we begin with an electronic and after 16 seconds we get the source on pads and bass... This mix is super quiet, as proph pointed out it has a ton of headroom and the LUFS is super low. Bass is very low on this section. We then get the main "melody" of the source on isolated piano and at 0:43 it's fleshed out a bit with some funky bass and simple percussion. There's then a repeat with some extra elements, pretty standard electronic stuff so far, with the source usage being fairly straightforward. At 1:38 I'm not particularly convinced of the bass/chords on the first few bars, the A minor with F# on bass sounds very strange since the melody goes to G#. The rest of this section sounds pretty good other than that. We reach a big break at 2:10 and a few seconds later we get a simple piano + percussion section. We slowly begin a build-up transition then with a creeping snare until at 2:48 we complete the move to the new genre. We have a slower beat now and the source has some variations on the main melody. I like the slightly distorted/aggressive bass sound on this section. This continues for a while and at 3:50 we get another usual break/build-up combo and at 4:21 we get the main section of the source again, it feels very similar to what we had around 1:08 but with a different bass sound. Not gonna lie, repetitiveness is starting to kick hard here. At 5:17 the melody is stripped from the soundscape and we close the track with just the percussion. On production this is good, I'm not an expert on electronic music by any means but everything sounded appropiate for the genre (although extremely quiet). Punchy percussion, nice bass (outside of the quiet one at 0:16). There isn't a huge amount of sound design stuff but what's there works well. Given the length of the track maybe there could've been more sound design details to create excitement or more variety in pads/backing. On arrangement I'm not as sold since this is very very repetitive. It feels like a very high percentage of the track is built over the same part of the source with very little variation. In particular, the entire genre shift and build-up leading to 4:21 was fairly disappointing as the "climax" at 4:21 was almost identical to what we had already heard at 1:08. In fact, I went back there and started swapping between those 2 sections and it basically felt like a copy/paste. Now, repetitiveness is common in this type of track and it makes sense with the idea of going from one genre to another one... Overall, I'm quite torn on my vote. On production this is good so no complaints there from me (other than the easily solved low volume of the track). However, the repetitiveness of the track, especially from 4:21 onwards, really put me off... For now, I'm gonna go with a NO, hoping that there's maybe a chance to make the final 2 minutes more interesting. NO
pixelseph ⚖️ Posted October 26 Posted October 26 Hell yeah, it's a house party in the Arctic Circle! Surely everyone is in earbuds, and there's no PA, so that there's no avalanche getting triggered. 😜 I'm going to side with the Ys on this one. The overall feel of the track is like a sample-swap where both artists flipped the same piano sample in the same track. Other than being too quiet (which is an easy fix by re-rendering with the fader up), the mix is well-balanced, and there is plenty of textural evolution across the track, as Liontamer pointed out. I also would have enjoyed more variation on the last third, but there's nothing inherently wrong with bringing back something familiar after deviating so heavily in the middle third. YES
paradiddlesjosh ⚖️ Posted October 29 Posted October 29 This one's a head-bobber for sure. Hard not to note the 5dB of headroom, as pointed out by proph, but that's an easy fix and not worth holding this track back for. I'm with proph, LT, and Seph on this one: I think the textural shifts under the sample flip and the solid production values outweigh the copypasta back third. Something new and exciting at the end of the track would make for something killer, but we don't vote on potential and what we have here is over the bar. YES
