I was referring to the fact that up until fairly recently, the only way to get a song you liked was to pay for a whole album. As a result, you might like 2-3 songs on an entire album if you were lucky. This was a major screw job for the consumers, 8-track, vinyl or otherwise.

It is only in the last ten years or so that most folks could finally break out of that rigid system.

That's a very good and valid point.
