Someone Like You (Light orchestral arrangement)

Having recently acquired a couple new libraries(Complete Orchestra Collection and EWQL, which has yet to arrive) I apparently decided to spend the entirety of my day off work testing COC out. I wanted to start with something simple and this is the end result - something of a cover of Adele's "Someone Like You". There's still a lot I can(and should) do to it as well as a lot of ideas I never looked into. As it was mostly practice piece I wanted to keep it simple. My main focus was on the solo violin, which I think I'm in love with. I'd heard these were some of the leading samples on release, and it certainly shows. Of course I still need a lot of practice but this was a good start, although I consider it to be pretty poor quality at the moment. Hopefully I'll get some time to touch it up to something halfway decent.

Just a pointer: keep the range of the instruments in mind :)

 

I'm by no means an expert, but it seems to me that your violin is at the lowest part of the range it can play. Personally I would have either shifted the violin part up 1 octave or used a cello, but it depends on what kind of sound you're after. On a real instrument every part of the range would have a different type of sound (mellow, warm, brittle, eerie, etc), but depending on your samples that might not matter a lot.

 

Also, when it comes to practicing, it helps to know what an instrument (and its player) can and can't do physically, and how a player would typically interact with the instrument. Stuff like breathing pauses for brass or woodwinds, when to add vibrato, ranges, etc. I'm not great at it myself and definitely need more practice and studying on instruments, their sounds and their behavior, but if you're practicing anyways it might be good to keep it in mind.

It's in the lower range for sure, but should be in a comfortable playing octave. I'm not much of a violin expert either, but I know a violin has quite a diverse range depending on what position you're in. I do need to look into some of the more complex scripting and sampling elements though, as I want a few portions to have a more mellow tone.

 

It's got quite a few different violin samples to work with. That particular one is espressivo, but there's also a warm variant and quite a few different articulations to work with on top of a lot of automation and performance settings. I think I'll be able to get some good results once I figure out how to properly use all of them. I'm still getting used to all the keyswitches and inner workings. Peter Siedlaczek really did some wonders with this stuff.

If you're interested in solo violin, I'd suggest to add http://embertone.com/instruments/friedlanderviolin.php to your wishlist too. Sounds great, very expressive and it's pretty flexible.

 

 

That's a nice one, thanks - I'll keep that in mind when I go for another set of samples. I think one of my next purchases will be the full version of Kontakt though, as a ton of good sounds require it(particularly a lot of sounds that are both good and cheap).
