  1. WHY are you using vBulletin of all things?

It's so annoying, I can't even log in to vBulletin forums without having to disable Javascript!

    Jeez...

That's an issue on your side, not a flaw of vBulletin.

Also, vBulletin does allow some nice things that phpBB doesn't, especially on the security side. Not to mention that it actually gets updates.

  2. Regarding the RAM thing, Smoke, I can't read that article. It says I need to subscribe.

Scroll down beyond the ads, that should do the trick. No need to register, it's just their way to get more subscribers.

    Anyway, here's the important part:

It's worth noting that WinXP, while the 32-bit version does indeed "support" 4GB, Windows splits the 4 GB of available memory address space into two separate 2 GB address spaces. One of the 2 GB address spaces is used by the Windows operating system, and the other 2 GB address space is used for user mode processes (applications).

However, there is a /3GB switch used in the BOOT.INI file. The /3GB switch changes the memory allocation so that Windows is only allocated 1 GB of address space, and user mode processes are allocated 3 GB of address space. Splitting the address space like this helps Windows to better manage high demand applications. However, Windows is configured to have a 2 GB address space for the operating system for a reason. If you use the /3GB switch, you can severely impact Windows ability to run multiple applications simultaneously.

Also, WinXP 64 supports 128GB of RAM...not that many people can afford such a system.

There's also some stuff about being able to use more RAM at the potential expense of stability.

  3. OK whatever set up you end up getting make sure you get a 64bit processor. If I were you were I'd get an AMD processor any day over an intel. They are cheaper, faster, and use up less power. What more could u ask for? Try to go for one of the multi core AMD Athlon 64's.

The speed and power use aren't as different as they used to be. Intel's catching up, and the Core 2 Duo does beat quite a few Athlon's as far as price vs performance goes.

Also the 64bit soundcards are starting to come out so watch out for some of those. I wouldn't spend an assload of money on a 24bit soundcard right now, but u said u were gonna wait anyways so...

64-bit soundcards? What are you gonna use those for when the vast majority of source material's not 64-bit? Interpolation doesn't help much either.

Wait to upgrade to vista it'll be buggy for at least the first 6 months of it's existence.

You mean applications will be buggy under Vista for a while. From what I've seen and used of Vista so far, it's more stable and reliable by default than XP was.

Make sure your motherboard will have a large frontside bus. A front side bus is just another part of the motherboard that controls how fast the information in transferred and processed. The only thing is, it's something you can't upgrade, unless you get awhole new motherboard.

The speed the FSB will be able to use depends on the RAM and CPU used as well, not just what the chipset on the motherboard dictates.

For video cards, if your only using this as a DAW and no gaming there's no need to spend any money on a videocard. Save urself some $ and go to the movies or something.

A videocard's still needed for output though, and onboard video tends to be crummy, resource intensive(It eats away some RAM) Not to mention that it's not an option on a lot of higher-end motherboard. Cheap VGA cards should do the trick though, since an audio workstation doesn't require fast 3D rendering and lots of pollygoons.

If your goin to get anti-virus get trend pc cillan, it uses up a helluva lot less processing power than norton or mcafee.

Don't buy Dell, their reliability ratings have been tanking severly the past few years. I'd really suggest getting this custom built, as long as u can get windows for a cheap price from ur school. There are tons of whole-sale computer parts places on the internet you can find stuff mad cheap. There are also lots of "academic-superstoes" you can go to, to find crazy deals on all types of things.

From the requirements, I'd directly advise against a pre-built system or a "custom" from a large manufacturer. Usually they tend to not come with the parts you need, or they cost a lot more than they should.

However, building a system yourself isn't something you wanna start on. There are sites and smaller stores offering custom-built PCs, or you could ask a friend to put the system together. One advantage would be that the other place can see if the parts you want fit the system you need.

    Also, less "u", more "you".

In response to the actual first post: Good luck finding a Core 2 Duo motherboard with 4-6 PCI slots. Most(if not all) of them have less, and have PCI-Express ports in place now. However, recent mobos tend to have at least 8 USB 2.0 ports(Four on the back of the mobo, additional four through brackets), as well as onboard gigabit LAN.

Also, XP Professional supports up to 4 GB of RAM. Might wanna read this first though:

    http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_21691179.html

There should be no issues with that amount of RAM though. Just remember that you'll need a lot of virtual RAM to compensate.

Upgrading to Vista doesn't mean you have to reinstall everything. Most applications and drivers will transfer rather seamlessly, although incompatible ones might cause issues.

As for the CPU: Stick to what you're planning on. You can always upgrade in the future provided your motherboard supports it, and when prices drop, you'll be happy.

  4. How can you be forced to install a program from a site? Windows will tell you when something wants to be installed, and give you the choice.

If you're running an unpatched OS or even pre-SP2 Windows XP, some sites can exploit bugs in IE to gain access and install shit. And it's not limited to IE either, other browsers can and will have similar issues.

Keep your system up-to-date and don't visit shady sites. It also helps to install antispyware software(Hint: Windows Defender is both free and good) and a good antivirus(Antivir for example. Don't use Norton since it's a piece of shit and has a habit of not being up to date)

Also, if you suspect that a post or link can pose a risk, use the Report button. It's what it's there for.

  5. Picked up Wario Ware today. It's good stuff, and the form intros are hilarious because of the voice used to introduce them, and the text he's saying.

Overall style of the game is pretty similar to the previous Wario Ware titles, which is good.

  6. Maybe I'm mixed up here, but aren't component cables only compatible with early Gamecube models? Just a slight precaution, maybe.

The DOL-001 model has the digital out on the back, and has the nice hidden feature of allowing you to swap faceplates, while the DOL-101 doesn't have a digital out and the faceplate is fixed. The DOL-101 wasn't released until a few years into the GC's lifetime though, and is normally the version you find in bundles, while units sold separately have a habit of being DOL-001.

Quickest way to check is just checking the back of your GC for a digital out, or the bottom for the model number.

  7. C:\Documents and Settings\Kayla\My Documents\My Pictures\FinalFantasy48.jpg

So you wanted it kind of like that? Except like without the extra stuff? Or bolder border?

    -Kayla

Uhm, you can't link to images stored on your own computer. You have to upload them to a website such as imageshack in order to let other people view them.

In response to the topic starter: Your best bet would be seeking out a good tattoo artist that works in the style you want, and ask them for help making a design. There's a lot of work that would have to be done on that image depending on how you want it, and it'll be costly to get done at a size where the details remain(Not to mention the shading and color work, if you want it in color)

It would also help if you indicate where you want it.

Make sure to check the artist's portfolio beforehand, so you know you're getting something nice. It'll be on there permanently, so don't go cheap on it.

  8. You can ask all your FL-related questions here:

Although Fruity Loops doesn't support the .rsn format(Rarred .spc set), and it doesn't support .spc either(Which is what you'd get if you unpacked the .rsn using a program like WinRAR)

Given the way the SPC format works, replacing instruments should be possible, but requires some technical knowledge about the SPC700 chip used in the SNES, as well as the construction of the .spc filetype itself. Alternatively, you could convert the SPC to a MIDI file and work with that.

Technical info on the SPC format.

  9. That said: Do some research on the Vista DRM before you consider using it. It doesn't allow any true HD movie to be played, under any condition. The best you can get is an upscaled DVD resolution.

Wrong. So wrong it's not even funny.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Windows_Vista#Digital_Rights_Management

Paul Smith, a Microsoft MVP and beta-tester, has written a response to Gutmann's paper in which he counters some of these arguments[9]. Specifically, he says:

    * Microsoft is not to blame for these measures, they have been forced to do this by the movie studios.

    * The Protected Video Path will not actually be used for quite a while. There is said to be an agreement between Microsoft and Sony that Blu-Ray discs will not actually mandate protection until at least 2010, possibly even 2012.[10]

    * Vista does not degrade or refuse to play any existing media, CDs or DVDs. The protected data paths are only activated if protected content requires it.

    * Users of alternative operating systems such as GNU/Linux or MacOS will not have legal access to this kind of premium content at all, unless these operating systems are fitted with similar mechanisms as Windows Vista, approved by the movie studios.

  10. So, are people already overlaying maps to see the similarities and differences? Ocarina of Time had a similar thing going on with A Link to the Past. The Temple of Time in OoT for example sits in the exact same position as the Lost Woods in LttP, and other areas match up as well. It also helps a bit in timeline placement(Although some parts are obvious)

  11. I'd like to add a bit from my point of view, having been a moderator since mid 2003:

I was never really for Unmod's deletion, I'd have preferred it if there had been some way to get rid of all the stupid shit and keep the good parts. Hell, I used to post in Unmod for quite some time, and was in charge of the NWG archive for a while too. I left it partially because some people decided it was a good idea to shit on the site staff, and because I found better places to post and enjoy myself.

There's also been some pretty bad generalizations in this topic, and a few things I'd like to address.

The staff not present at Magfest was unaware of Unmod's deletion until after it happened. We didn't have anything to go by. We were caught by surprise just as much as the members(Or at least I was) Same goes for the banning of Ayres.

Yet people decided that their best option was to charge on those who had little knowledge of the actual situation, because they just happened to be around. Not the first time this happened, and somehow I doubt it'll be the last.

Thanks to my job, social life, and not having been feeling too well for the past week or so, I've been out of the loop a bit on a few occasions(Such as the retroactive banning situation) This has also affected my responses in a few cases. Doesn't help if you're the only mod around who has to deal with everything at some points, as it can get rather stressful. I'm sure at least one of you plans to go "Lol internet serious business" at this. Go ahead, it doesn't change the fact that some things are indeed serious business to some. There is a level of responsibility involved in this job which is rather easy to miss.

To be honest, I considered quitting the site staff around the same time Darke decided to actually leave, and for what I'm pretty sure are similar reasons, and other reasons(Such as being held responsible by some for everything that happens on the site, and being expected to explain everyone's decisions)

In the end, I've decided that it's better to stay on and help, even if the job of moderator is a rather thankless one. We get much more comments on what we do "wrong" as opposed to when we do something "right". There's a lot the general audience of the site doesn't see because it's taken care of in time, and there's no credit in that.

I'm not gonna try and defend every action we've taken, because that's rather impossible(Partially because there are actions I don't/didn't agree with, but can see a reasoning for)

Finally: It rather surprises me that when others say pretty much the same thing about the upcoming Off Topic forum that I've been saying for a few days now, they suddenly seem to accept it.

  12. Anyone who calls the console "Nintendo Wii" is nutty.

It's a console named Wii, which is made by Nintendo :).

Note that the other console threads also have the manufacturer name in them, and a large amount of sites refers to the system as Nintendo Wii rather than Wii.

  13. I agree on the midi part. I personally love games that can change & shift to match what's happening on screen. The midi in TP is really great, & sounds good enough to fool you into thinking that it's orchestrated at points. Especially the field theme. I think most people just want to have that fully orchestrated in game for novelties sake. I' much rather have dynamic music that changes to fit the mood, rather than a static fully orchestrated track that awkwardly transitions into other tracks.

Not to say i'm against orchestrated game soundtracks, I like em just fine. I just prefer the dynamics midi offers.

Same here, this is also why I prefer cutscenes to be done with the in-game engine rather than all the pre-rendered crap first introduced by the PSX and still being used in games today.

Dynamic stuff just adds a level of involvement to a game, even if it's small.

In my view, Twilight Princess has excellent music, and the samples used are of high quality.
