  1. http://www.snesmusic.org/spcsets/ct.rsn - "Sara's (Schala's) Theme" (ct-3-06.spc)

Certainly a lot more promising material in place now, but not yet there. The choices for the leads are less abrasive now, but still grating. I made sure Mark pulled the drums back on this before I posted the resub, because they were even louder than this. They're not so jarring on that level, but they're definitely still obscuring things.

The drums still pound at the same intensity nearly all the time, but sounded fairly realistic otherwise. Like Israfel mentioned, the percussion structure seems to clash with the other ideas here, which was a problem the first time around. Not so much so now, but still a problem. zircon has some excellent ideas for you to use once again.

I allowed this resub to go straight to the panel, since I noticed Mark had just submitted it to djp, so I might as well do Fusion a favor. Loads of improvement compared to the first version. Less abrasive textures overall, along with slightly better sound balance this time around, but this still isn't cohesive enough. Really rethink the structure here, bro. You're coming along fairly well as an artist though. This isn't a track I would focus on retooling much further, but I'm looking forward to what else you're gonna come out with as you develop even more.

  2. Oy. Been working like a dog on these eps. Sorry for the delay in releasing #44 (featuring a plethora of interviews and some kickass muzak). Check out the Ormgas.com playlist and give it the hits. The "Currently Available Episodes" thread features other available VGF material you can check out.

Thanks a lot to everyone who called in, as well as those who tuned in. We hit some annoying as shit snags early this season, but definitely went out strong for the final live episode of the semester, and I really appreciate it.

Be sure to DL the episode (216MB / 5hr15min) & the chat transcript (THANK YOU, Antonio Pizza, for saving my ass there), which should be available throughout the holiday season and make for great stocking stuffers.

I sincerely hope you have an opportunity to download the episode and sample what I felt was an exceptional tracklist. Please drop some comments on the material, and I hope you enjoy.

  5. I only heard some light ambiance and effects added to this one compared to the first version we judged. It does fill some stuff out a bit more, but that's not really a reason to resubmit. Everything else is the same.

With an issue I mentioned last time, if 2:17-2:58 didn't come off as so unstructured (especially during the fadeout), I'd be willing to YES this. You do in fact provide a good amount of variation in the forefront while retaining the same percussion foundation most of the way. However, retaining the exact same beat the whole is not something many submissions can quite pull off.

2:17-2:58 left the repetitive percussion patterns too exposed. I wasn't really agreeing with zyko on the arrangement not going anywhere until that point, and the lead synth there attempts to freestyle on top of the arrangement but comes across as too aimless. Sorry, bro, but I would have to hear some revisions for the last minute to secure a YES. Altering the drums there wouldn't have to be an overhaul that would ruin the concept of the track. Just something subtle. The Pro Wrestling melody and the drums for that last section are just too repetitive for the track in the big picture.

It's a catchy track though, Mattias, and a quality homage, believe me. I genuinely enjoyed it. Though I'd like to hear more done with this, post it to VGMix if you're not willing to work on this any longer. Otherwise, hit up the WIP forum here and resubmit.

    Song: Schala's Theme

Comments: I never really meant my first submission to be an overly used song like Schala's Theme, but when you get musical inspiration you just kinda go with it. Its done in an Orchestral/Techno hyrbrid kinda thingy if you know what I mean. Once I got into it, I sort of leaned toward the style of zircon's Calamitous Judgment.

I tried to fix most, and hopefully all, of the problems described by the judges. I first made an entirely new drumbeat and then expanded upon it 'n stuff. I changed the "sax or whatever that was at :57" as it was called to a better sounding woodwind section. New lead synth, and replaced the bell thingies to another synth. New intro thing at teh beginning, then followed by teh old intro and the rest of the song.

  8. Hey, bros! Compyfox gave me permission to link to a hosted copy of the VGF43 Aftershow (1hr36min/66.2MB). Be sure to check it out for fun with Joecam and crew including lots of good (and bad) tracks, and make sure to tune in next week for more Joecam goodness as he comes on the air for an interview. Thanks a lot to Roland for recording the aftershow, doing a great job of mastering it and hosting for the peeps!

  9. http://www.snesmusic.org/spcsets/ff6.rsn - "Celes" (ff6-122.spc)

The recording indeed struck me as needing improvement. I don't like muddy solo piano pieces where many of the notes and chords mash together. Lengthy sustain can be ok, but I need more clarity than this. Call it a character flaw, but these aren't negligible issues to me, and I typically won't accept pieces like that. Heavily sustained and/or reverbed sounds can work in moderation, but I felt that some tracks, like this one and Etude for Piano in F# Minor, can go overboard with the ideas .

The arrangement is alright. Somewhat conservative on the surface, but subtlely interpretive things are going on here upon closer inspection. I would have appreciated some room being made for the arrangement of 1:08-1:27 of the actual source tune. In any case, I thought the development, as it were, was too simple and cyclical. The track does its thing from :00-1:45 and then basically repeats itself from 1:45-3:07 with little notable change.

Going into the second iteration of the "Celes" theme, the escalation of volume at 2:20 really didn't work here, since the piece just retread it steps. Pretty anti-climactic. I wasn't jarred by the change into the more active section starting at 3:07, but felt that the gradual transition from 2:57-3:06 was very unstructured and didn't work effectively in making that move. Also, perhaps incorporate that section and similar ideas to that ealier on in the composition. I could see why Vigilante felt more could be done with this mix in length and certainly dynamics. This doesn't have to be bombastic to be engaging, mind you, but this was still pretty tedious I would agree.

Also, I don't mind a subtle close as opposed to something with more overt resolution, but the ending from 3:38-3:58 seemed to consist of fairly random notes that just sputtered out as the finish. I see the attempt at keeping things moody and sombre, but this was still a pretty lackluster conclusion.

Christian's a skilled pianist, and I'm certainly glad to know he'll be involved with Xenogears Light over at OneUp Studios. I feel like this could pass with just a bit more thought regarding the sustain levels, compositional variation and dynamics. Afraid I can't go for this as is quite yet, but I hope you'll contemplate going for a resubmisssion, Chris. You'll be on here yet.

    NO (revise & resubmit)

  10. Great show last weekend, if I may say so myself. Thanks very much to everyone for tuning in, as well as the many callers who livened up the experience. Thanks to Compyfox for providing the MP3 of Trenthian's interview. Anytime you have the after-show, feel free to send it here. I never record those, so it'll be a good bonus!

Thanks to Antonio Pizza for the luck last week as I really needed it badly. I'll need more this week as I start finals, and I wish all you collegiate types out there the best of luck as your spirit is broken by finals. I hope to pick myself back up next week in order to have DCT, Joecam & Koala on the air, and the music will be bueno per the usual.

Be ready for some extra shows this coming Saturday, Sunday & Monday, as I make the push to complete all of my make-up shows and get all of the missed material out there. Here's hoping the webstream stays good. Even if not, I'll be sure to at least have MP3 releases planned.

Enjoy this week's IRC chat transcript as well as the 151MB/3hr40min episode! Here's the playlist:

  11. Rich got back to me yesterday afternoon with the source tune, which I've tagged and hosted. Since I'm busy with finals, I have yet to thoroughly check it out and compare it to the submission. Nonetheless, I've made what I feel is a sufficiently informed decision on it. Believe me, I'll be getting back to it in depth at a later time to point out notable differences between the two tracks as well as things I liked about this one.

The structure of run.dll's mix is obviously similar to Tom Bible's version. As far as remixes go, run.dll's mix is distinguishable enough from Bible's. If I had to make the judgement call on whether run.dll's version is a mere remix or substantial rearrangement compared to Tom Bible's version, I would say it's a remix and NO on those grounds. If you wanted to ignore everything below and save yourself the trouble, you could indeed cast a NO and it really wouldn't need more explanation than that it needs more rearrangement and less shared structure & samples.

In this unique circumstance, however, the in-game music is the remix, while the submission here is the original track that inspired the game music. I'm gonna bring up this analogy early and leave you guys to run with it. If John Williams sent in a track one day saying "Someone used a remix of my work in 'Shadows of the Empire' on the N64, so I'd like to submit my original track as a remix," we would reject it. As far as I understand it however (and we could get verification if necessary), Rich & Paul's original track that they're submitting as a remix of Judge Dredd game music has not been used in any commericial ventures.

Likewise, if we went the anti-Tetris route like Binnie has done before (and like I personally agreed with), you could argue that the in-game music is derived from work that wasn't created for a game and isn't technically identifiable as original game music, thus not being valid source material according to the site.

Frankly, even though the book says we should reject, if we can be flexible on our standards and guidelines for Tetris, we can also be flexible on this even more unique situation, especially since it's almost certainly bound never to repeat itself. Believe me, I know the rules and understand that my vote's pretty much flies in the face of them. Even if you were able to accept this under a "Tetris exception", the arrangement itself may not be different enough to merit an admittedly generous YES. Nonetheless, I hope to at least promote a healthy dialogue for this vote, much like was done with "Sweet Games". Find someone else to NO this, please.

    YES

  12. Ryan actually PM'ed me about two hours before djp posted the mix, finally getting back to me on the e-mail that I sent him. I wanted to make sure his views on the judging of the mix were there for the judges panel and fans to check out.

I hope that Ryan, along with everyone else, has no problem with me making these comments public, as I think his comments are very informative for those out there who are interested in this very split decision.

Hey, well, I got home and checked the judges decisions panel and saw that apparently I've messaged you quite a bit late as my "Grief of Aktemto" mix has already been accepted.

I checked the critiques and I tried to work on some of the things the judges said (and I must say I was surprised to see some great constructive criticism... it's probably because half of the judges are different since I last submitted here, but I used to not get as many good comments). But after tinkering with the song for an hour or two, I didn't really notice any substantial difference. I think some of the issues stem from having to rerecord, and/or get better samples; both of which would take quite a bit of time (and matching the guitar mic setup could be difficult).

And some of Danny's comments, while very helpful, would seem to want resequencing of most all the percussion on top of some of the orchestrated parts. I hadn't really intended on changing a lot of the arrangement aspects because I was mostly fine with it (as were a couple judges, I guess). I realize there are some production issues (only so much I can do in my basement with sub-par equipment), and mainly I was just trying to see what the bar was for the site. I hadn't really intended on resubmitting anything, as I've done that a few times before. But since it was accepted, I guess that's all moot? I'd like to improve future mixes, but to a point I don't want to be a perfectionist and get caught up in lots of technical details. Does that make any sense?

So, I guess I'm content with the song where it's at. I'll definitely keep in mind all said criticisms and I'll surely look into improving dynamics and other things in the future if I submit again (or even just for my regular releases at dod and vgmix).

Sorry to type so much. Thanks.

I wanna extend my congrats to Ryan again for "The Grief of Aktemto" making the grade and bringing some Dwelling of Duels material to the site. I speak for myself alone, but I feel that DoD is a fairly recent, yet very important facet of the remix community that more people should appreciate. With Ryan & Crimson running a high-quality compo, I hope to see more artists there submitting a few tracks this way.

    Name of Song: Schala's Theme

    Comments:

Resubmitting this. The original judge decisions are at http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=46935. This is about as far as I'm willing to change anything on this, so don't ask for another resumbission. Some of the things I've changed include samples, volumes, layers, additional parts, and a new ending that doesn't fade out. As much as I didn't want to change some of the samples, I did anyways (I really wanted that violin sound, it whined, and that's what I wanted). Contrary to popular belief, I meant for the piano to be one of the leading instruments, but I turned that down too since everyone thought it was too loud. I layered some of the instruments so they wouldn't pierce any ears. I added strings, harps, drums, and synths to the middle section where it used to be solo piano as well. And lastly, I took out the fading ending and reworked it. I added some reverb here and there to give it a more spaced out feel too, it may seem to be much, but I wanted to keep a sombre mood. This is as far as I can change things without it losing my original vision.

Hope you all like it this way.

  14. I'm definitely satisfied with 6Y here. As I said before when offering this idea, we use it "as long as any NO vote make it clear that they strongly disagree with a mix's passage." It's not enough that a vote simply have some disagreement, but that you actually ask for the additional votes.

We won't always have 12 active judges; since reaching 6 on either side is the aim of these vote extensions when someone's particularly unsure of a mix, let's lock'er up, boys. If Wing or zirc feel like voting, they're welcome by all means. In any situation like this, you're welcome to voice yourself after 6Y or 6N has been reached, but you already get more than a few days courtesy of the extended voting.

This one's certainly resolved to me, and while I didn't vote YES on it, this is nonetheless an enjoyable mix that lots of people out there will enjoy and that we're collectively down with. As far as I know, this is a mix that exposes people to another genre of music not covered on OCR and thereby adds something I feel is important to the site, so thanks to Dan for bringing some house material our way.

  15. http://www.snesmusic.org/spcsets/ff6.rsn - "Tina" (ff6-201.spc)

There are gamer geeks out there who have said that this theme literally touched their heart. Ugh. I hate Terra's theme. I wish people wouldn't arrange the first part and try out some of the stuff from 1:18-1:50 of the theme in there, but they never do. Not that that section is anything great anyway. The handling of just the Terra melody is too straightforward for my tastes; no one ever takes any genuine risks with it because it's so perfect or whatever. Don't get me wrong, you have cool some delay/echo effects (though it does indeed wear out it's welcome) as well a ton of expansive addtions in instrumentation. Handling this arrangement via the expansion route turned out really well here and, on that level, almost qualifies as something I'd accept as a more straightforward arrangement.

If the production was better (22khz ain't where it should be), the reverb was toned down, and the structure of arrangement had more variation and development, this would have more of a chance. Whatever woodwind sample comes in at 2:00 sounds pretty artificial, so do what you can to address that issue, by the way. The muddiness of the track obscures some of the more delicate sounding elements and messes with the balance of sounds. There was some further building of the theme during the addition iterations at 2:50 & 3:40, but aside from the added instruments there was nothing new in the arrangement. The mix turns out boring about halfway through and unengaging overall as a result. Keep at it, Xerol, and keep improving your game. You're coming along I can hear, but this needs a lot more attention to production as well as crucial work in keeping the arrangement ideas fresh. Just wanted to give some more feedback on the arrangement, so you have a little more to work with.

    NO

  16. I coincidentally also sent an e-mail yesterday. I've actually talked to Rich thanks to Binster's help over at the VGMix chatterbox. He said it may be a little difficult to get a copy of the Tom Bible remix of this song.

Hey, Rich. Dropping you my e-mail so you can provide me with the Tom Bible remix of MCMS used in Judge Dredd vs Death. Sorry if it takes a while to get it. We may still vote on it without the source, but technically don't wanna run into another scenario where we pass a remix that should have been rejected on account of not having the source tune to compare it with (e.g. Cyborg Jeff's F-Zero GX mix - http://vgmix.com/song_view.php?song_id=1214 - we later removed it).

Sorry for the formality. In order for this reverse remix thing to work with our standards, it would help to hear how different Tom Bible's remix sounds from yours in the structure and composition. If his version isn't rearranged much, that could technically make your track not different enough from the track used in the game.

I will certainly look around myself to see if anyone else might have any kind of audio rip of music from the game though. Lemme know if you turn up anything. Thanks! - Larry

Because this song is actually the precursor to the source tune, there's a risk that the arranged version of this track used in Dredd vs Death is just a close cover of this I believe. While the sound quality and presentation is good, no one should cast a vote without having heard the source. Over the weekend I may try and see if anyone from the GamingForce Audio forums has a game rip copy of it, but don't have any ideas to get the source beyond that.

  17. 6Y, if y'all don't mind.

I don't mind. However, is everyone going to contest votes they don't like? I don't really feel this is one of those special circumstances. This one isn't that questionable imo. But if you guys want to continue to the vote, that's fine.

I felt the lack of dynamics was enough of an issue, in spite of the genre. Would prefer to have some more input.

  18. VGFs 30-34 are now up on Bittorrent. Thank AP for hosting the tracker: http://ap.zapto.org:6969/stats.html?info_hash=a3cf7168e62de3ecca628d0c30eef7f24adab248

I'm gonna be seeding for another 4 hours tonight, and probably a 6-12 pm time window for however long it takes to get some other seeders set up. Point your client to whatever folder you keep your VGFs in; you should be able to just get the ones you're missing. Now, time for gravy.

Thanks a lot to Xerol for hooking this up. Certainly try it out, especially if you're interested in snagging the recently released episodes for #33 & #34

43? The whole numbering scheme is majorly F'ed up.

It is, isn't it? The reason I did that was so I didn't skip any numbers for the weeks I've missed. During the 3-day gap I have between my second and last final, I plan on recording makeup shows for all of the weeks I've missed covering the material released for those respective weeks.

Are you doing new shows now or are you just still airing re-runs? I miss my fresh intake of Oji.

I always keep saying this, but HOPEFULLY Saturday will be a live show provided the stream stays intact. I just have to make it through Friday and the many papers and presentations I have. I'm dead serious when I say wish me luck.

  19. Right now, there's a poll going on at my other main hangout, Ormgas.com, regarding VG Frequency and other established VG remix radio shows.

The current system is one where every single OC ReMix plays once (newer ones getting several plays), and then an episode of VGF plays. This cycle occurs once every 3 days and some change. The poll is there to decide how VGF should be handled in the future at Ormgas.

The poll is on the bottom left-hand side of the main page. I encourage you to register to leave comments, but do vote on what you would prefer to have done with the show at Ormgas.com.

Should ormgas have a dedicated stream for other video game music radio show reruns (including VGF)?

 Yes. Better that than to mess up the playlist with them.
 Well, I think it's better to include them in the playlist (provided most of the time only OCRemixes are playing).
 All the same to me. I wouldn't listen to them anyway.
 No, I think VGF is enough for now.
 No, no, no! I want no shows, just streaming OC Remixes.

  20. http://www.snesmusic.org/spcsets/smk.rsn - "Rainbow Road" (smk-12.spc)

First off I have to state that I like this track. It doesn't make my vote any more difficult, but I enjoyed it overall and had the privilege of debuting this track on VG Frequency while interviewing Mustin in September. Objectively speaking though, this mix does nothing particularly interpretive with the source material on a rearragement level most of the time and isn't an innovative or expansive straight arrangement piece either. That sounds a lot like my Donkey Kong Sunset vote, which I've now referenced twice in two days.

The orchestral opening of the first 30 seconds sounds great, and makes you think the arrangement is going to be a very different take on the source material, but then going into the meat of the track at :31, everything is basically a minorly upgraded cover. The voices in the SPC that comprised the meat of the original's melody and harmonization are referenced verbatim here. You've just gotta be more.

You can hear various instruments periodically pop in to embellish things, but aside from that there's no substantial creative expansion here when the Rainbow Road theme is being covered. Create some brand new harmonies and countermelodies to provide a more unique spin on things.

The percussion pattern was probably the only thing drastically different from the source, but it looped the entire time. Use drumloops as much as you want. I don't mind that badly myself. But provide some variations in the pattern to keep things fresh.

I felt the guitar playing throughout could be more energetic and expressive. The sax solo from 1:57-2:22 was well done overall but felt somewhat dry. Add some reverb to it. The piano solo from 2:23-2:46 sounded better to me, although I thought the last few notes from 2:44-2:46 sounded awkward. When you were on the air with me on VGF, you mentioned that William laid down his tracks pretty quickly. I would just recommend that both of you devote additional time to polishing up the delivery on the live work so it's at its best.

Nonetheless, providing the near-minute of original solos was a great idea that really pieced together very naturally with source material. Be sure to apply similar ideas on top on the source tune melody as well if you plan to keep the arrangement straightforward. Mixes by guys like bLiNd, Midee & Mark Vera are excellent examples of straightforward arrangements that expand their source tunes greatly.

I enjoyed this mix, but the live instruments could sound better, and the Rainbow Road arrangement could be much more creative overall, which is the main sticking point on why it's not YESable in the first place. It's not meant as a knock on the track, but this sounds more like a late-stage WIP, where more ideas sound as if they're going to be added. Good stuff, but it's gonna take more creativity to meet the guidelines here.

    NO (rework & resubmit)

  21. This one got submitted back in late February, and I played it on my show then. Grr on losing this one.

I think it's alright, some people really like it... whatever

it's a remix of the moon theme from duck tales. And guess what? Its neet.

    http://www.zophar.net/nsf/duckta~1.zip - Track 7

I really liked how all of the elements came together here. Good opening with the piano and strings. The claps on percussion are pretty tame, but the reverb levels are good. Kind of spacey, along with an basic upbeat yet trancy type vibe at times.

Star always does a great job of fusing electronic and "real" instruments. Here's he relies on the occasional use of some string samples to give the track a slightly epic touch that also often functions as a transition point to a change in the style. The arrangement is pretty straightforward most of the time, yet certainly expansive compared to the NES original.

Though the clap beats at the base of the mix could have varied up more when they were in effect, the overall development of the track was very good throughout. Lots of instrumental changes, along with plenty of addition and subtraction on that level as well to constantly keep ideas flowing and the presentation fresh.

The minimalist work from 3:03-3:29 was one late example of how Star kept the rearrangement ideas here viable for 5+ minutes. 3:29-3:55 also had some freestyle-type work that was later placed underneath the Moon theme for yet another new idea introduced late in the game. Overall, how you gonna hate on this? Good progression, good flow, good arrangement. Happy ©Hannukah, Star!
