  1. I loved this movie. The most fun I've had at a movie theater in forever. Makes me a little sad that it struggled to top 10 million for the weekend. Hopefully it's one of those word of mouth deals, because the movie is so great. The presentation of attempting to be filled with cheese is just great. Loved it.

  2. Kind of depends on the game for me. I like checkpoints/autosaves because it's automatic and I don't really have to worry about it. Some manual save systems just take me out of the experience, while checkpoints and autosaves feel a little more natural.

    That said, I like checkpoints that have been balanced and placed in a specific spot by a HUMAN BEING. These autosave/auto-checkpoints that exist in some games are TORTURE at times. Like Call of Duty 4, I remember playing single player working my way to bad position and the game suddenly autosaves my progress right there. When I died, I was set up to die the exact same way over and over again from the exact same place which was really frustrating. And at that point, when I'm respawning a few seconds back in time, I know the guy that's shooting me, so I start doing weird things to just kill the enemy, which kind of feels like breaking the game in the way. So.. yeah, checkpoints/autosaves are nice, but there are too many games that just let the game periodically save when it's not necessarily in your best interest in-game.

    Sometimes though the nostalgia of having to go to an Inn to save is kind of nice though. A little rougher on the player in this day and age, but still delightfully nostalgic.

  3. So I need a music file to start up and play to the end then loop back to a middle point continuously. WAV files can have embedded CUE points to do this, but I've run into a snafu. I can't set the cue point accurately. What is the best way to add cue/loop points in a WAV file? I'm using FL Studio Fruity Edition which I don't think supports CUE files (I hear Producer Edition does, but I cannot find ANYONE talking about it on the internet). Is there a program that can beat match AND add these points to help me find the exact measure where I want the track to loop?

    One would assume FL Studio would have an easy way to do it, but again, I don't think my edition supports it. I am able to add these CUE points in Goldwave while looking at the waveform, although accurately setting the point by ear is difficult and not really as accurate as it should be. IS there an easy way to add these cue points without meticulously beat matching by ear?

    If you have any information at all I would really appreciate it.

    I don't care if I get flak for it, but you know, I can kind of dig the sound that autotune produces, in theory. I like the idea of heavily processed vocals, meshing the machine with a human being. I know it's overused in pop but that synthesized voice produced from vocoders and auto-tune plugins is something the cyberpunk fan in me quietly delights in. Sure, it goes a little overboard in pop to the point where it is indeed annoying, but I'm sure there's SOME kind of unique and interesting creation that can be built from the plugin when people aren't trying to emulate the sounds found in the top 40.

    Again, I inherently like the idea, but its execution in pop music is getting kind of old.

    I can also attest to GSnap, although I found it a little difficult to use. I could never get a decent sound out of it, although I have seen people on Youtube using it before. So If you put time into it, sure, still, as someone said above it's not the best thing out there. Price is right though, ha.

  5. No one I knew enjoyed the movie. I haven't seen it yet. I keep hearing rumors and internet posts that people booed when the credits rolled.

    I kind of want to see this movie in the same way I kind of want to watch the recent Dragonball and Street Fighter movies. Absolutely riveting for all the wrong reasons... like looking at a traffic accident or the aftermath of a natural disaster. I mean, it's not everyday that we get absolute gems of awful. It cleanses the palate. Let's your appreciate the good stuff a little bit more, savor the flavor. It's like a marinade of meh giving more taste to the seasoned tenderloin of better films.

    It's all good. On that note, I need to watch the Avatar TV series. -_-' Apparently the youngins claim it's the bee's knees.

  6. I picked it up today after absolutely loving the original. Every store I went to was sold out with the exception of a Wal-Mart across town that had two copies left.

    So far I'm only about 2 hours in so I can't say if it's better than the original or not, but it's pretty fun so far (but the feeling is a little darker than the original.). The sub-par voice acting and some of the story elements are my only complaints. It really feels like a lot was lost in translation, and the voice overs just don't fit exactly like you think they should (hell, they're leaps and bounds better than the N64 version). The gameplay is killer though. Each stage feels really long with plenty of mini-boss battles thrown in. Figuring out how to kill off these mini-bosses/bosses is a lot of fun, and killing a whole line of enemies in the background with one graceful sweep of bullets is absolute bliss. The more precise your shots become (and sword slices) the more cool and fun it is to play the game.

    It's nice to have a new game that has that old arcade feel while still staying fresh. If Treasure is under appreciated for anything, it is how perfectly balanced their gameplay mechanics are. It is genuinely challenging at times while still being fun.

    And it's REALLY nice to see a relatively forgiving continue and checkpoint system. More shooter's need these simple additions.

    ... off to play more Sin and Punishment 2!

    Totally sold. That's all I need to hear.

    The fact that they've included MGS3D is a bonus.

    And Kid Icarus looks fun as hell.

    Sold, Nintendo. I've bad mouthed your Wii in the past, but damn do you guys know how to make exciting portable stuff. Well played.

  8. An awful soundtrack thread and Armored Core is still not mentioned.

    Sure, you can cite maybe 1 or 2 good tracks out each AC title's 20 some odd tracks, but the rest of the tracks are a mess of awful and bad sounding synths, strange often out-of-pitch arpeggios, and gratuitous over use of out of tune sound effects (oh, and don't me forget the unpleasant drum loops). And what's worse is that most of the tracks are all 4-second loops droning on and on and on. The tracks that are good are usually the ones that avoid being electronica.

    I mean, take almost any Gundam OST and play it along side an Armored Core title, except turn off AC's music. The experience is fifty times more amazing. Seriously, try it.

    When I learned this, it was a great moment of realization... almost like the time I realized the nutritional benefits of Lucky Charms and Cheerios were 99.99% identical (give or take some magnesium). Just wow. It made Armored Core's experience so much better to have decent, thematic music. Droning 4-second loops (hidden in a 5 minute techno song that makes you want to scratch your ear drums out) do not do the series justice.

    The only song of the all the AC games I can remember was a unpleasant track from either AC1 or AC2, and it sounded like an electric banjo being water boarded. In fact, I think it's one of the tolerable ones in the series.

    Anyway.

    My God... who thought this last one was a good idea? This, my friends, is a perfect example. A distinct random set of loops with no real musical vision or focus. It's all just unpleasant, sloppy sounding cuts and loops masquerading as "music." Why?! why?!

    This is what my nightmares sound like.

    This has touched a nerve. I'm going to sit on the couch and drink some lemonade and watch a TV show about kittens (STAT) before an artery in my neck explodes. *sigh* A travesty! Don't get me wrong, Armored Core is fun series that I've followed since I was a kid, but it's not without a few serious flaws, number 1 on that list is the music imo. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go listen to the G Gundam soundtrack on Youtube. Domon's theme is calling to cleanse the palate of my ears. Good day.

  9. Graphics that focus on technical gimmicks rather than solid art direction will always age badly. Games like Team Fortress 2 and World of Warcraft are still going to look nice a decade from now, while the dime-a-dozen stuff with bumpmapping and bloom/HDR up the ass are going to look rather tasteless.

    Well, I remember being completely blown away by the first Killer Instinct when it first came out. And anything with digitized sprites really looks awful now too *cough* Mortal Kombat.

    And those old games that used live video footage of real actors. They distinctly remind me of the blossoming early-90s PC gaming market. They were just awful and full of hokey cheesiness. Still, at the time it was the bee's knees (as the kids say). Haha. Speaking of, I occasionally see my old Rebel Assault II CDs in my CD collection time and time again.
