  1. Mega Man 3 'It's Boss Time' The song starts out and is heavily built on original samples of the Mega Man 3 boss tune, which is closely interrupted by a fairly cool well chosen drum loop that is actually free of any distortion. You can tell at this point that Gux had taken a lot of effort in the mixing and overall mastering of the track. The song continues using the in game sample with a moving picked bass helping the drums along with the groove. A few extra synths are here to add to the main melody. Right panned strings come in during a lighter bridge part which occurs early in the song and then continue to play for the rest of the song, which works well as it adds depth to the track. Even an electric guitar makes an appearance near the end. There is quite a few changes here, although most are built off the same melody, but it really adds to the variety here. A good one by Gux, if not one of his best.
  2. Sonic 3D Blast (SAT) 'Power Puppet' Jivemaster's interpretation of Sonic 3D's Panic Puppet Zone remixed is a darkish type mood. Fairly techno, a bit minimal, making use of a thumping reverberated bass drum, a thickish bass and a plethora of synths. I must say the song is quite different from the original, which is how I intended it, keeping it mainly bass orientated while using other synths to add variation. My real gripe with this was my choice to leave the clap right above the kick, which consequently causes quite a bit of distortion at times. Panning slightly to the left or right would have been a good idea, or I could have laid off the compression a bit. I was pretty happy with it overall, but looking at it now, I could have done much more.
  3. Super Mario Bros. 'Da Pipes' Franz Keller gives us a slowed down dark rendition of the Super Mario Bros. trade mark tune. Instantly the drums (the claps of which are extremely wide might I add) remind me of some kind of hip-hop beat, like Nelly's stuff (but in a good way). An analogish bass synth with delay plays the main melody, often interrupted by a variety of vinyl, beep, voice and break samples which help the main beat do it's job. Sadly, nothing much changes in the mix apart from what's already stated. I think if this mix was extended and incorporated more elements it would have been a lot better. Still, it's very well mixed, and I do like the overall sound of things. Nice job.
  4. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 'Chemical Juice' Arrh, Chemical Juice - my (Jivemaster) first mix which consequently got me on OCR and started all this crazy sheeit. The mix starts out with some fast right panned high hats which I used to give the song more pace. Mainly synth orientated here, with a bass like synth replacing the main lead from the original song, a fairly low-profile bass backing everything up and a bunch of synth stacks and reverberating blippy synths accompanying the main melody. I didn't try to go very far away from the original song, mainly sticking to the original tune and adding in the occasional drum stop. Near the end I try to spice it up a bit by adding in a bit of an outro by using existing elements from the song. Overall the mix is not too long, and I think I stopped just in time to avoid it becoming boring. Quite minimal, but concerning the circumstances I think it turned out pretty ok.
  5. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 'Gerudo Peeples' A fairly well produced mix we have here from Scott Peeples. Although not quite as inventive as most of his other stuff, it's still good. We've got flutes, guitars, some pretty cool drums (as always) as well as some strings and an acoustic bass, lightly panned in all different directions. It would have been really nice if Peeples actually got some more realistic guitar on here but nothing's perfect eh? The song starts out with the bass, then everything comes in with the layers of instruments changing every now and then to keep interest. The mix possesses quite a soothing sound (much like the original I suspect), especially in the flute areas. It's 3:21, but for some reason it feels really short - very weird. A decent mix, probably not one of Peeples' best, but still good.
  6. Lemmings 'DABOMB' Short and sweet by dabombinc. Making use of a drum and bass type loop incorporating a voice sample to keep the groove, some smallish synths for the main tune and some nice reverb, the song plays along bringing loops in and out. Pretty standard stuff here, but it is well done, and some good panning is used. Keeps at a steady pace, not too fast, just right.
  7. Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening 'Tail Cave (Beatdown Mix)' Peeples' songs are always top notch, and this is no exception, despite being one of his earlier works. The song starts with a right panned clavi and some strings, and a left panned piano, playing the main melody. Suddenly the hard pounding drums enter, catching you by surprise. The drums while a little distorted are still most excellent, although Scott could have perhaps taken a little more time and care at perfecting their level. A Peeples trade-mark analogue like synth appreggo accompanies the drums along with a low profile bass, adding to the groove. The song changes abruptly several times between the light instrumental parts and the pounding groove, which increases interest. Sadly, Scott does not try to go too far with this one, keeping mainly to these two patterns and not adding much variation. It's all good though, and at 3:40, it doesn't get boring. A good listen that does the original Game Boy tune proud.
