  1. I think DarfaceX and Ichitootah have a point. It's not a huge loss to the losers if their mixes are not included in the final product - they can always submit their mix to OCR as a stand-alone track if it does not succeed anyway. Otherwise the final product may be asking for unwanted criticism in regard to which song is better and which song should have been included as the main track on the album and so on. Plus, this will also result in some songs getting much more coverage than others, making the whole thing unbalanced. Strong competition needs to be in place to fuel exceptional music, and if any of the mixers know that their mix isn't quite good enough, they will rest easy knowing that it could be included anyway and could slack off rather than driving through the problem and trying to surpass the other contenders with more creativity. In my eyes any project needs to have a definite and clear-cut track list with no B-sides or whatever. -Jive
  2. Shael, I've changed my mind. Rather than Ryu's stage, put me down for the Original SF2 Title Screen track. I definitely want to have a go at this one. -Jive
  3. I'd like to have a go at Ryu's stage music. It would be fun. How much time will we have to actually complete the song though? I'll need to juggle this in between other commitments. -Jive
  4. Yeah the song's not bad. Very authentic loungey kind of sound. I like this kind of piano stuff. I didn’t find the backups that cheesy at all – quite a nice change actually. Didn’t quite like how the outro drums were done, but other than that a good mix which is quite pleasing to the ears.
  5. I enjoyed this mix from Relik. Although there's not a heap of stuff going on, some of the sample manipulation and synth tweaking is quite clever. Good take on the original. -Jive
  6. Well Skunk Face and Wintermute, of course the mix is pretty crappy - it was mix 110, and my first remix after all! If you were actually here at OCR back in the day of the old, old, old, old forums and no judges, you'd realise that basically every mix released was not exactly the most exciting piece of music material on the planet. See it in context people -Jive
  7. A good professional mix, though it should be for anybody with the same equipment stash and facilities as Jeremy Soule. Regardless, it is good to see the bigger guys in the industry have interest in the little. ...and Russell Cox is still battling... it isn't over yet! -Jive www.jivemaster.com
  8. Hi guys, it has been brought to my attention that PuLSer has been waiting on judging of his mix. Here is the e-mail...
  9. Hi guys, finally got hold of all of these, and I agree with everyone that they should be removed. 1. Yes 2. Yes 3. Yes 4. Yes 5. Yes 6. Yes 7. Yes 8. Yes 9. Yes 10. Yes 11. Yes 12. Yes 13. Yes 14. Yes 15. Yes 16. Yes ...will still have to look at Protricity's suggestions for removal... -Jive
  10. I agree with the other guys here - too much like the original. Nuff said. NO. -Jive
  11. I'm going to pass this, but I personally don't really like the song. It's a bit too start and stop for me to make it really "listenable". Despite this, you can tell a good amount of work has gone into this song, especially the panning and synth aspects. Could have done more though, such as giving us more time to listen to each part before changing it - the quick changes made me mad. I also didn't overly like how much of the song relied on effects for its variation. Overal, not a bad job, but could have done more. YES. -Jive
  12. The song is too short, and nothing really happens. There is nothing new in this mix from the original. Take it away and try something new, bring it back and we'll take it from there. NO. -Jive
  13. Yes, I a must admit, this wasn't my greatest mix. Definitely lacking in the mid/low end. The elements of the mix were very touchy (almost as much as Malcos and my "Dub Island" mix), and altering one would effectively through the rest into a tizz and create distortion. I had several levels of breaks in addition to the regular drums there, and that made things difficult too (you'll notice the overal volume level of the mix is lower than most of my others for this reason). Overal, I think I actually tried too hard :S, but I was fairly happy with it none-the-less. Mind you, this mix has been sitting on my computer unfinished for yonks (about a year), so it's really more of a insight into my mixing past rather than a step forward for me... await my future mixes Oh, and thanks for the comments guys. -Jive
  14. I like the lo-fi kind of sound to the whole thing. I'm sort of torn here - not sure what way to go (I know that doesn't help). When I listen to it, the main progression does annoy me a bit, some parts of the mix (ie. sax) are much too dry - get some reverb/delay in there, it would definitely make it better. I don't like the brass at the start - whether or not it's meant to be bad sounding or not, I don't like it. Some of the layers clash with each other in this song too (like the guitar bits). I'll say NO for now. -Jive
  15. Shit, I just reviewed this and then lost my text!! To sum up: Make quality level higher - 160, 192 or variable. Mix too dry, add reverb or delay.... anything!! If these things are done, I will say yes. It's similar to McVaffe's piano exclusive stuff. NO -Jive
  16. I've always liked Malcos' stuff, and this is no exception. Although it's not as eventful as his other mixes, it is by no means a bad mix. Malcos does tend to have a fairly minimal style from time to time, and through headphones everything sounds well mixed and EQ'd. I'm not going to punish him for not going further with it (although Malcie, it would be great to see you stretch it a bit further in the future ) Anyways, YES -Jive
  17. I don't really like this. For starts it's 96kbps - it needs to be better than that. Secondly, it's a bit short. I don't like the sounds that are used, especially the lead (which is a simple steel guitar patch). Not much happens in the mix, so it gets quite boring. At one point you think it has finally stopped (thank god), then all of a sudden it starts up again! As much as I try to like this (especially because I'm in quite a good mood today), I just can't pass it. No -Jive
  18. Well for starters, this guy Jaroban is very polite. Bonus points for that... although I do really want to see Pizza quit, because I don't like him, so NO..... (kidding Pizza, kidding!!! ) Takes a while to first get started, but when it does it's quite good. Good quality in the sounds, that's always the first thing that wins me over when judging on a remix. It's very streetish and jazzy or whatever. Me like. Don't really need to analyse this too much really - it's all there - quality, variation, originally, length. Not much more to say. Not sure exactly why DJP let this one go through to the judges, he's posted stuff before on his behalf that is worse than this. Yes -Jive
  19. I agree with Mr. Pizza - yes the musical side of things is good, but it's the production side which is lacking. Better quality sounds are needed (even though the ones here are still ok), it definitely sounds like it's a .mid just being run through a keyboard. We need more creativity. No -Jive
  20. I don't mind this mix. Obviously, it's not the greatest mix in history, and it's got some stuff in there which kinda ticks me off, but I think it works fairly well in its own disjointed way... I could imagine that the song would get a little annoying the 2nd and 3rd time around (only listened to it once), but I think there's just enough changes in it to make it viable. The lofi-ness of it all is cool at first, but gets on your nerves for the next 3 mins you have to listen to it. It didn't however make me hate it, probably because I do that kind of shit sometimes too in my stuff (more tastefully though). I assume that all the FF lovers out there will download it anyway, even if it's just because it has FF in the title. EDIT: The more I listen to it, the more I don't like it. Originally I was going to say yes, but the cut-off abrupt end on it was the last straw for me. NO -Jive
  21. Hey guys, thought I'd add my composer's view to the whole thing. Yeah the muffled intro was intended - I was trying to somehow make some cheesy music which a lot of Kung-fu licks contain. The intro part wasn't really much to do with the original song at all, it was something I started working on which didn't meld with the rest, so I thought I'd just make it separate. It made the mix a bit longer too, and kept people thinking, which is always good The main part of the mix was going to have a lot more in it. The song itself had been sitting on my HD for months, and I was intending to add lead and what not to the song, but in the end, I just couldn't have been bothered... which is a little sad obviously, it could have made everything a lot better. Although, to be truthful, I suppose the song was short enough that it didn't really need it. Overall I was quite happy with the outcome, and I was happy to have done a more obscure song which probably would have never been done. -Jive
  22. I wasn't going to judge this but I had already downloaded it so what the hell. Hearing the intro for the first time, I quite liked the overall sound. Although the synths are a little simple sounding, there's nothing wrong with them. I've got a problem with the drums though - they're too soft compared to the rest of the mix. They should definitely be louder or everything else should be softer. Quite a few changes which is nice, and does what it's meant to do - be dancey, and it's not overly long which is good, so it doesn't get too repeditive. Still, the drums need volume, and I know this is really harsh but I can't really pass this until there's something done with them. Overwise, great original mix. This isn't a bad rejection, just something that will make the mix heaps better in the long run when it is posted. Fix the drums and I'll pass it on the spot. No -Jive
  23. I'm going to say YES, because I do think it's well done. Any longer and I'd say it's repetitiveness would probably get annoying, but in its current state it didn't bother me the first time I heard it (I was actually a little biased in the judges direction before I heard this thinking that it would be annoyingly repetitive which made me get all defensive and write it off before I heard it). Obviously, more could have been done, but isn't that the case with everything? Just enough is there I think. Any less and I'd certainly say no, but there's just something about this song that makes it worthy in my opinion. -Jive
  24. I didn't actually mind the song production wise. Everything sounded quite nice at the time I was listening to it (without headphones mind you). I think that this song would definitely be passable material IF and only IF those annoying samples were removed. I'm talking the Wonka and Beastie boy samples. That's just blatant copyright infringement - it may be ok for a DJ set, but this is a game remix site, which is supposed to house game remixes, not DJ wannabe exercises. The piano was looped like that intentionally I believe because later on the reverb is allowed to carry on into the next sample. I think that part sounded fine, I sometimes to stuff like that, he didn't overdo it, so that's ok. The scream is only tolerable the first time you hear it. Don't repeat it over and over. It's really annoying. Also, the scratching sample is played over like 3 or 4 times in a short period. Just use it once at the start and leave it be. I hate it when samples are used over and over, they sound good the first time but get old fast even on the second use. So, anyway the vote is NO. -Jive
