  1. Well while we already knew it was coming, Final Fantasy XIII-2 has a price and release date for December 11th on Steam!

    I'm super excited being that in terms of tone and visual design, this one is probably my favorite out of the entire trilogy. With the release of FFXIII on Steam, there were some issues with PC optimization. Not only are they rectifying this for FFXIII-2, but they're also updating FFXIII to fix said issues around the same time including support for different resolutions and other graphics options! Yay JRPGs and Final Fantasy on PC!

  2. Is Sarkeesian actually a journalist? I never knew that was established. And the whole point of her not being a "gamer"(which is a stupid term in the first place) has been discussed previously in the thread. To echo the arguments presented there, the biggest problem is her lack of context. It's incredibly easy to tear down a character portrayal on a superficial level without actual context. To echo Bleck from way back(paraphrasing): "Yeah, back when it was created in the 80's, Super Mario Bros. was pretty sexist. You know what else was pretty sexist? The 80's!"

    Sarkeesian(at least from her first vid) seems to have tried to divorce gaming imagery not only from its internal world context, but in many cases from historical context as well. What we end up with is a superficial indictment that rings very similar to alarmist rhetoric similar to Florida's Jack Thompson and California's Leland Yee. We all know how successful they were in shaking up things in the industry. The only difference is that being female, it's much easier for Sarkeesian to use emotional appeals(the most duplicitous type of appeal there is) ostensibly in the name of feminism(which gets her even more popular cred).

    If Sarkeesian were to tackle real issues facing women in the actual industry, such as overt sexual discrimination in hiring practices, the pay gap between men and women, and other such issues with tangible repercussions, then I would be completely on board with her. She, however, is arguing against intangible and otherwise subjective concerns that really amount to "I don't like seeing that other girl in a miniskirt", which is pretty juvenile and raises suspicions of maladjustment and/or inherent insecurities(if I were going to let my psych background do the talking).

    THAT being said, there absolutely is room to explore her arguments in constructive ways that can impact the industry positively, but I don't feel that she isn't the best voice for it. And speaking personally, I find offense in people that can't sit back and appreciate the progress that industries, groups, nations, what have you, are making in regards to social and legal changes. These things take time, and changes ARE happening. They should be celebrated instead of antagonized saying "it isn't enough!". Of course it isn't enough! But we're working on it!

Not to be contentious, but didn't you previously disagree with djP when he'd suggested that it was the responsibility of those who wanted change to enact it in the context of video game developers and feminism (i.e if you want video games to treat women better, consider becoming a game developer)? I may be remembering wrong, here.

    Also who added the "/#Gamergate" to the side of the thread's title? Regardless of where anyone is on the spectrum regarding Sarkeesian's position, there's plenty of room for thoughtful debate/discussion. Gamergate is a bunch of Internet nonsense aimed at discrediting and shaming a group of people under the veil of "exposing the serious lack of journalistic integrity of video game news sites."

    If there was any credibility to Gamergate's followers, then all they have to do is stop visiting the offending sites and/or create their own. The industry will take note and correct itself(assuming there was anything to correct in the first place) if enough people take that action.

At this point I don't even remember what Anita was all about outside of very angry rhetoric and pleas directed at her audiences' emotions(which reminds me about that whole "End Women's Suffrage" joke video released way back). Granted I haven't been paying a huge amount of attention to this whole thing anymore, but outside of certain internet communities whose forum post counts thrive on conflict and several news outlets that thrive of page clicks, I haven't really seen a lot of the supposed effects that this entire discourse was supposed to have.

    To be frank, I'm honestly shocked that there are people posting here in actual support of her message.

  5. When it comes to dungeons in games, I usually think of two things that would instantly improve them in my opinion.

    1. No backtracking. If a given dungeon is long, there should either be A) no need to go back at all and force me into the teeth-grinding tedium of having to go back and forth between long stretches of corridors(or worse yet, random encounters) or B) give me ways of easily going back and forth such as teleportation waypoints. Having to backtrack without there being some kind of new thing being introduced on the way back KILLS the mood for me honestly. I remember the "bonus" dungeon in Eternal Sonata(but really so many of them are offenders) that was essentially just a bunch of platforms you had to go back and forth on. That was a long hour I spent there.

    2. Once you've explored the limits of a gameplay mechanic or puzzle idea, it's time to let it go and try something new. Whenever a new idea is introduced, it makes a dungeon more compelling, like "figure out this wall puzzle" or "guard this guy going down the hall"or whatever, but when the idea is played to death over and over in the same dungeon, it starts to feel pretty lazy and boring. I can't think of any recent examples off the top of my head(fortunately), but I know I've played games like that and I couldn't stand certain areas because of it.

  6. Well a lot of gamers roaming the internet unfortunately fall prey to irrational "hive mind" think. Of course FFXIII DID disappoint a lot of people, but couple the previous with over-hyped expectations and SE's gratuitous over-selling of the game(remember that FF series infomercial? Yeesh...), and you're heading for Disappointment Avenue. That isn't me being an apologist as much as a realist, though. I wear my love the FFXIII series on my sleeve(but then I also loved Metroid: Other M and Infinite Undiscovery), but it's mostly because all the things I think are great about the games(story, world, and character concepts, music, visuals, battle systems) vastly outweigh what I don't(hokey dialog, episodes of linearity). If people don't like 'em, that's totally fine, too. I just hope that most people would look try to weigh things similarly.

    And yeah, FFXIII for the most part ran really great save for the Archyle Steppe(which wasn't too bad). FFXIII-2 and FXIII-3's worlds were much more expansive, and the engine they used had trouble rendering it often in my experience.

  7. All three of 'em are pretty much day one buys for me. FFXIII was just beautiful to look at and the battle system gets progressively better as characters unlock more ATB gauges, Crystarium tiers, and eidolons. The story is pretty hit and miss for a lot of people, but I felt it had a lot of strong points, especially in Palom Polum(whatever chapter that is. 8 I think? ) Final Fantasy XIII-2 and XIII-3 represent a gradual decrease in graphical quality, but they both have their redeeming qualities such as FFXIII-2's surrealsit pre- and post-apocalyptic setting mixed with several improvements to the battle system, and what I thought was an excellent treatment for its main character(I didn't really care about Serah at all until playing through XIII-2).

    FFXIII-3 really does well by including what a lot of people thought was initially wrong with FFXIII, namely exploration and sidequests. It really feels like they took some pages from western RPGs.To your point, Prophet, I also had a hard time innitially getting into XIII-3, and I won't even be able to finish it 'til its PC release since I have no PS3 now, but once you "get it", it does a nice job of tying together the story from what I've played, and it's really freaking dark. Really feels like they took a page from not just Majora's Mask's time mechanic, but its narrative and themes as well.

    The biggest thing for me though is the presentation. The 360 and PS3 CHUGGED on certain parts of FFXIII and nearly all of the other two. With the PC version, the experience should be much smoother. With this along with the FFIV DS Steam release, it also means that hopefully we'll be seeing more Final Fantasy(including FFXV) on the PC.

For anyone who's still a fan of the trilogy like myself(especially XIII-3), but that never got to finish it(especially FFXIII-3), now you'll be able to pick up the entire trilogy by Spring 2015, with FFXIII-1 releasing on Oct 9, 2014 at around 16 bucks each(?).

    Ostensibly, the games will be playable at 1080p at or around 60fps, which is much better than what it got with consoles at the time. I'm pretty damn excite.

  9. The fact that this thread has jumped the shark from Sarkeesian is probably a good thing. Outside of her first video, which I guess to throw her supporters a bone might have gotten the "conversation started", she hasn't really provided any thought provoking discussion.

    Does sexism exist? Sure it does. I don't have any hard data on whether or not it is still as legally and professionally pervasive as it was pre-feminist movements, but on a micro-,individual level it's still very much alive and well.

    Does sexism in video games exist? Well first what the hell does that even mean? Are we talking about sexism in the industry itself or in the content in question? If it's the latter, then context is absolutely key. Otherwise we're just handling the problem superficially, and when has that ever been a good thing?

    Is Sarkeesian necessary to keep this conversation going? Not really.

    At any rate, I haven't posted in the thread in awhile, but I'm pretty excited about Smash Brothers even more so after all the recent announcements. Granted I was pretty excited already just having Zero Suit Samus and Shiek as unique characters, but all the new stuff is great nonetheless. It's 3DS or bust!

  11. I'm really impressed. I'm impressed with Nintendo's commitment to hardware innovation, I'm impressed with Sony's commitment to software innovation, I'm impressed with Microsoft's commitment to making sure Halo is just good enough to keep them afloat.

    And I'm also impressed with how great this salad tastes.

    My girlfriend and I are super excited about Palutena in Smash, and I'm pretty much wowed by Nintendo's Amiibo system and NFC finally coming into place. That's without beginning to talk about all the games.

  12. Definitely going to get a boxed copy of Mario Kart 8. I've already bought too many Wii U games digitally. Anyway, more important, I would love some voice chat in MK8. That would totally be awesome, but I wonder how Nintendo would handle it as they tend to keep Miiverse as family-friendly as possible.

    My guess is that it would be enabled through your friends list only, and I think they'd probably be even more vocal about parental controls being in the system, especially with voice chat enabled. Don't be surprised though if Nintendo decides to put the kibosh on voice chat if someone decides to use it for illicit shit a la Swapnote.

    But yes, despite that painful to watch Nintendo Direct, Mario Kart 8 looks even better than I thought. Can't wait to play bumper cars with y'all again!

    EDIT: Also as a side note, got Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze as a birthday gift a few months back. Just got around to finishing it through on 2-player coop, and man, that game was balls to the wall hard, but so much fun. Go grab it, if at least for the pretty environments and David Wise.

  13. I tried Remote Play on the Vita the other day with my PS4, it's actually pretty amazing. I found it hard with Infamous to aim and see the little tiny things cause it does seem like it's meant more for a BIG tv, but it definitely worked, completely, very good. I could see myself taking it with me if I go on a trip and I know there'll be wifi.

    So if your GAMER GURL has wifi and a Vita she could totally keep playing her PS4

    We do love playing FFXIV on our Vitas via remote play.

    As for Other M, makes sense, fans often just want the same bs over and over again with a different number on the box. Thus the success of CoD. Which is ridiculous.

    However, yeah, with the storyline... it would've worked if it wasn't supposed to connect at all. But it was supposed to connect and it just didn't completely work. Like, it did, but it wasn't executed completely correctly. It's not as big a mistake as (using my example from earlier) Sonic '06 was, but there were definitely some mistakes in there.

    There were some critiques like "Samus runs like there's no weight to her suit" and while part of me agrees, part of me is also like "who cares? I still feel the power and ability when playing as her, and it's a cool new little thing." The gameplay was honestly really neat.

    I think this all would make sense on a Wii thread or Metroid thread, though, would it not?

    Well last thing I'll say in this thread about Other M before returning it to the Other M or Wii thread(even though it technically qualifies as the Wii U is backwards compatible), is that the plot has a lot of nuance to it in terms of character feelings and conflicts(things most gamers just aren't ready for yet), but it does have hokey dialogue and weak execution in several areas, which detracts from an otherwise very intriguing story concept. I'm by no means saying it's the perfect game, but it is absolutely nowhere near as bad as a lot of Metroid fanbots will have you believe. Again, most of them are just upset that Metroid Other M wasn't another Prime game or another Super Metroid 2D Action Adventure style game.

    But as for me personally, I couldn't give a flip less about any of that. They also say that the game either completely destroys Samus' image as a badass bounty hunter, to which I say they have no concept of what it means to be human, and becoming a badass by overcoming adversity in the face of personal weakness, fear, and insecurities, or that it "demeans her gender" by having her follow Adam's orders, without realizing that Adam is a goddamn commanding officer of the organization that employs/governs her bounty hunter services. It'd be like Boba Fett telling Darth Vader to fuck off.

    I feel like my girlfriend would demand to play even if she was sick. Or she'd just want to watch a movie. But she's a gamer. So maybe. Who knows. Yay. My A.D.D. is really up there today as you probably notice.

    But yeah, I remember this situation. I found more of an advantage just being able to play my game when someone else wanted to use the tv, and of course that was kinda part of the idea of making the gamepad in the first place. That concept was advertised in all the earlier advertisements for the game.

    Also, you like Other M? I happen to like that game despite the fact there's no way to really defend that it wasn't a good Metroid game comparatively and according to what everyone else thinks, but hey, I happened to like it. It's kinda like enjoying Sonic '06 despite knowing the game is truly awful. Except I don't like Sonic '06.

    She's a gamer(she just bought a PS4 for herself), but she's sick in bed. What part of "sick in bed" wasn't clear? :-P

    Other M is an awesome game despite what a lot of people thought. Plot aside(which is subjective anyway), the gameplay is excellent Team Ninja fair(which is what sold me on the game when it was announced way back when). Hearing people complain about Metroid Other M sounds just like people complaining that every Final Fantasy after VII wasn't Final Fantasy VII.

So I decided to grab Metroid Other M again on the cheap so my girlfriend could experience it, and as it wonderfully turns out, while gameplay isn't possible on the Wii U Gamepad, it can still be streamed, so while I'm in the living room playing, she can watch it like a movie while she's sick in bed.

    That's a pretty awesome experience actually. Go Wii U!

  16. Yeah, but Zone of the Enders is a full game that takes several hours to completes. It's not JUST a demo, so if they REALLY bought it JUST for the MGS2 demo, they chose to do that. Now, if you want the demo, you have no choice but to pay for it.

    I want you to reread that sentence and tell me what the problem with it is.

    You're saying that the people who just wanted to play the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo chose to buy Zone of The Enders(which by the way, even reviewers on IGN made jokes about ZOE being just an expensive MGS2 demo case way back when). Then you go on to say that if you want the [Ground Zeros]"demo", you have no choice but to pay for it.

    ...Just like the people who wanted the MGS2 demo had no choice but to fork over $50 to buy a game they didn't even care about just to play the MGS2 demo. Yet buy it they did, and much like the scenario Brushfire pointed out regarding Ground Zeros, the exact same thing happened with Zone of The Enders. Hell, I remember Gamestop reselling the bloody demo used!

    People are complaining that there are mostly lengthy cutscenes and the actual gameplay amounts to very little. Guess what? That's a Hideo Kojima game.

    I'm not saying I agree with it. I think it's absurd to charge that much for a game that barely lasts anything, but what I AM saying is that there's a precedent of MGS fans straight up saying "we put our fanboyism above our sense of value/reality and will pay many money dollars for a neutered experience." Konami banked on Kojima's series' name alone being able to sell at any price, and it worked. If anything, the fans have themselves to blame. I think at the time, a lot of people were on their parents' dime, so they didn't necessarily care about the value proposition back in 2001(or 2002 I forget), but now that we're all wearing the adult pants, things seem to be different.

  17. People bought Zone of The Enders, another full priced $50 game on the PS2, for a Metal Gear Solid 2 DEMO. If we translate that into 2014 money dollars, it would've been around $72 for, again, an at most 25 minute long DEMO.

    as a actual mgs fan i can absolutely agree with this.

    konami are cashing in on the franchise, they wanted to sell it at that price. from what i know kojima wanted to do as was listed but my sources are flimsy.

Actually Annie and several others, and I'm going to take the unpopular opinion for a second, when you invoke the word "Remastered" or the term "HD Remake", there's a certain gravitas that you're implying, mainly that the game has been "HDified" and essentially prettied up to go with all the bells and whistles associated with this hardware generation. We can toss out all the apologist arguments and defenses as to the assumed lack(I haven't seen the game yet) of visual pop that people were led to believe(and there was a lot of hype over the cleaned up visuals). Different people have different standards or different preferences, so this matters to some people.

    Now, does that make the game any less worth the price of admission? Well again, it's a value judgement, and I personally think it is worth it. There's nothing wrong however with saying "well yeah, the game didn't do _insert thing here_, and I'm totally fine with that. It doesn't bug me though and I don't think it should bug anyone else, either."

  19. Considering that Toriyama was the same guy behind both FFX and FXIII, everyone should have known that they were getting a straight line(and a bug for a final boss). The fact that FFX has such a sizable fanbase has always been confusing to me since it pretty much ended any sense of non-linearity previous FF games might have had with the removal of the world map.

    Not that it bugs me too much, since I'm a fan of both the X and XIII series, but apparently some people were miffed about XIII's straight line.
