  1. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that if anything, big budget games like Resident Evil 6(especially Resident Evil 6) and the like would have sold much, MUCH less if there were no used market. People would have no incentive to pick up what is essentially a "maybe" game until it got down to $20 or so.

    It also isn't a matter of "spend less = more profit" as much as it's "spend less = studio won't close if game doesn't sell millions of units."

  2. No one is saying Tales characters are as guaranteed as Pac-Man. But it's equally naive to think Namco/Bandai didn't sit down with Nintendo and jock to get other characters in because they'd be complete idiots if they didn't. I wouldn't be surprised if a Tales character made it in, and I wouldn't be surprised if one didn't. That is all.

    This is essentially the point we're making. Does it matter if they don't include a Tales character? No, but it's about as likely that they don't include one that they do, for the reasons pointed out. It's fine if you people don't want 'em in there, but don't post stupid arguments as to why not.

    Kojima and Sakurai are best beds and so Sakurai decided that he wanted to subject his team to even more work because Kojima "asked him nicely"? And I bet Konami didn't collect any royalty at all from Snake's inclusion in a huge money maker series, but rather went with it because the two are bros?

    Well that settles it. Just get in good with Sakurai and you can get your own notebook doodles included in one of his games. Come on, people. Get real.

  3. If they were included strictly on the basis that they were Nintendo characters, then where's Balloon Kid? Where's Wart? Where's Saki from Sin & Punishment? With Marth and Roy, we were specifically referencing relevance and general popularity of the characters outside of their home markets.

    In regards to Kojima's begging, that doesn't change the fact that Snake is still a third party character with hardly any actual relevance to anything Nintendo outside of a few games which are FAR more niche on Nintendo platforms than those of the Tales series(again, home markets). Seriously dude, go check out the sales numbers. We can wait.

  4. Um, Tales is not niche in Japan, it's just behind FF and DQ in terms of popularity. And considering that including a character in Smash would be Namco/Bandai's best way to increase it's popularity in the states, there's quite a good chance of it.

    I'm willing to be Marth and Roy were also "just some anime dudes" to most Americans back when Melee came out.

    Well I'm glad someone else said it. Darke, that was eloquently worded, but you neglected to explain the appearance of Solid Snake alongside the others mentioned. I can't think of a single Metal Gear game that was released on a Nintendo system that people didn't think of as niche outside of the rerelease of MGS3. Twin Snakes was ridiculed pretty harshly, and very few fans outside of a dedicated niche played Metal Gear 1 and 2 before the MGS series of games. And regardless of whether or not it "makes sense", Mega Man and Sonic are both 3rd party IPs, and in a discussion involving 3rd party IP, I don't see how they'd any more of a better fit. Hell, why don't we add Simon Belmont in the mix? He was in Captain N!

    By contrast, the entire Tales franchise literally pushes consoles in Japan. In fact, several of the largest console bumps(and the only reason the 360 even made a dent in the country) was because of Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Graces, and Tales of Xillia.

    You guys talk about relevance in the west(does that matter for a Japanese company? ), but to add to Metaphist's point, I'm willing to go as far as saying Fire Emblem's continued existence as a series has a lot to do with if not completely due to Roy and Marth's inclusion in Melee.

  5. Someone please enlighten me as to how Snake(especially Snake), Sonic, and Megaman make more sense to be included in Smash Bros. than a character from what was essentially considered a killer app for its time on a Nintendo platform AKA Tales of Symphonia?

    Your "arguments" reek of "I don't want this, therefore it's stupid!" sentiment.

    Of course there's more to be said about The Derrit's argument, but I already feel like an asshole as it is right now.

If they go for a Tales character(which they'd be stupid not to do), they're probably going to go for a character from a Nintendo-bound entry in the series, which could go anywhere from Phantasia, to Symphonia 1 & 2, to Graces, to Hearts and Innocence. I'd imagine they'd want to stay away from Sword wielders given that there are already so damn many, with pretty much a guaranteed inclusion of Link/Young Link/Toon Link and Chrom/Marth/female Marth(Lucina).

    Although honestly I can't see them going with anyone other than either Lloyd Irving, Kratos, or Yuri Lowell if they do.

  8. I see your point, and I certainly don't want THAT aspect coming back, but I was referring more to the amount, diversity, and quality of games that came outback then. It was a hard time for devs, but a great time for gamers.

  9. Tecmo and Team Ninja actually did this with Dead or Alive 5 recently. Es ist mir egal, but don't be surprised to hear the same people pissed about on disc DLC and being nickled and dimed go nuts about this.

    I think we're in for a paradigm shift in how we consume fighting games.

    ..But really, where the hell are my PC releases, publishers!? I want to play Blazblue and Soul Calibur 5 on my laptop! At least MK is coming out on Steam soon.

  10. Here's the thing about consumers and the products they buy. Take this from a business owner... people only care about something insomuch as it affects them. That is not to say everyone is SELFISH. You might be against "anti-consumer" products because you as a person value that cause, and it makes you feel good to support it. However, most people really don't care about this stuff. People on forums like this, or even larger sites like Reddit, are not at all a good representation of the majority of America. Most people do not buy (or not buy) things 'on principle', but rather because it fulfills a need. The Xbox One is a home entertainment device for the living room, obviously focused on games. People will buy it despite all the other issues if it fulfills that need.

    It's like how there was so much outrage about Diablo 3 always requiring an internet connection. You would think that it would do terribly based on how many people online said they would never support it, and yet, it was a record seller. Likewise, all the people that rail against DLC are dwarfed by the people that buy DLC because it gives them enjoyment.

    However, as a supposed business owner, you should know that if anything most Americans are also VALUE conscious. If they know that they can get something at a cheaper price, then they will gravitate towards that side of the aisle. If this weren't true, then used game sales wouldn't make up more than 50% of Gamestop's profit margins and PS3s would have been flying off shelves when it first launched. All Sony has to communicate to the average consumer is that you'll be able to play used games on the system(read to the average consumer: cheaper) and that you still have SOME type of ownership of the game you bought(i.e. can easily lend/give it to a friend, or sell it back), and Microsoft's gambit is done.

    And as minor as many people here think it is(and regardless of if it IS a big deal or not), there are a lot of "average" American consumers who the minute you communicate the idea that Kinect is always on and can read everything placed in front of it down to a seemingly microscopic level, AND that it's transmitting that data to a console that is always online, all their "big brother senses" are going to start tingling.

    It's true that this forum is only a microcosm of a subsection of gamers, but we're not talking about anything only gamers like us would ostensibly talk about(the industry, "hardcore" games, or game music); We're talking about things that specifically and very directly affect consumers of all types, and quite frankly, I'm a little offended that you would insult the general consumer's intelligence by making such a statement.

  11. I'll just repost what I wrote on an article on Joystiq dealing with this sort of sentiment. I also mention a bit about the new FFXIII-3 trailer(still not calling it that other dumb thing), so ignore that part at your leisure:

    Lately I honestly have no idea how I feel about the FFXIII series as a whole. At first, I was put aback by the extreme linearity of the first game, but fell in love with the graphics and the battle system once it opened up fully, and while I appreciated the ideas behind the main characters, I just couldn't get past some cringe-worthy dialog and cliched anime tropes present in most of the characters. The second game eased up on the linearity, but while one would think limiting the party to just two characters would open up all sorts of possibilities for character growth, it fell relatively flat on that end, even though I found Serah's overarching plot pretty interesting, and I appreciated the risk they took with the ending. The world building in FFXIII-2 was much better than its prequel, and it's a shame that said prequel didn't do more in that regard. How is anyone who doesn't read the Analects and other journal logs in FFXIII even supposed to know who Etro and all the different Fal'Cie are otherwise? FFXIII did a pretty terrible job in that regard.

    I'm still a fan of the FFXIII series though, although that (FFXIII-3)trailer was all over the place. RPGs have changed over the past decade alone. Whereas in the SNES, PSX, and PS2 days Final Fantasy set the gold standard for what an RPG on a console should be like, Western and indie RPGs have really left their own marks and have shaped what we expect from RPGs in terms of narrative, gameplay, and how the two are intertwined. Final Fantasy XIII-3 really has some britches to fill; Not only does it have to regain people's hope in the FF franchise as a whole, but it also needs to live up to modern RPG standards.

    Here's to hoping for the best.

  12. You can play pretty much any Final Fantasy game without worrying about continuity unless the games are part of the same "series"(AKA FFX and FFX-2 or FFXIII and FFXIII-2/FFXIII-3). This is especially true with FFXIV given that not only are they entirely different teams, the MMOs are developed with entirely different goals.

    Anyway, for the most part I think that DJP is right on the money, specifically about the difference between written and spoken dialog. I love FFXIII, but the dialog is INCREDIBLY hokey, which is something that's been plaguing a lot of Western translations of Japanese games. Granted being that I actually speak the language now, I can pretty much vouch for the dialog being equally terribly in Japanese, so they don't just add another dose of shit for the NA/EU release, although they DO handle voice acting differently than we do. Regardless of that, it's as if the localizers forgot exactly what it means to localize something. Stop speaking in esoteric terms, stop giving far too much meaningless exposition, etc.

    Also. Derrit, you should feel pretty bad for using such a pathetic and antagonizing copout bro. Seriously.

I guess I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that A Realm Reborn: Final Fantasy XIV(still just gonna call it 2.0) has a release date of August 27th, 2013, and phase 3 of the beta, which includes the PS3 version is slated to begin at the end of E3 week on June 14th. This is a big step as it will be showcasing not only important changes they've made based on player feedback in addition to new systems such as free companies, housing districts, etc., but it will also mark the first step of keeping their promise of a PS3 release they made so many years ago.

  14. Brandon, you had me until you mentioned Motoi Sakuraba. Seriously, I can't think of music more generic. Have you not heard most of his recent Tales stuff.

    I think they could actually make a great Crystal Chronicles game for the Wii U if they actually grew a pair and just went balls out with it.

  15. I mean using the ability to play from your Gamepad. I already have the ability to play the stuff on the system, I'm just wondering when they'll actually be releasing the Wii U version so I can pay the fee, and play the game on the GamePad.

    Super Metroid got me hooked on that shit.

  16. Also is there any word on an actual release schedule for the Wii U virtual console? The fact that they haven't just shifted everything on the Wii version to the new one is a bit vexing. My girlfriend got me Super Mario RPG for the Wii store and we immediately thought we'd be able to transfer that to the Wii U. Can't do a damn thing until they actually release the game on the Wii U VC.

    Annoyance.
