  1. HOLY SH*T ANOTHER UPDATE?!?! http://media.putfile.com/Bloody-Tears-REAL-GUITAR Not quite, so hold your horses. I've done a real quick recording for test purposes, and it has come out quite acceptable (at least to my ears), so I'm posting it for yet some more feedback. It's just a small portion of the melodic part, and apart from the horrible overbending that starts at 0:48, I'm pretty content with the result..sooooooo, some feedback would be nice, guys
  2. Pretty much everything about the production has been said, so I guess I'll comment on the arrangement: unfortunately, though I like the guitar solo's, there hasn't been that much done to set this song apart from the source (except for durrrr the instrumentation). What I'm getting at, is that I would love to hear you either expand on the constantly reused dun dun dunnn-melody, or maybe change the key at some point to give the melody a whole different ambiance, because at this point your just repeating the original melody a lot. ( which the source did as well, but that doesn't necessarily mean you should!) Anyway, those were my 2 cents
  3. http://media.putfile.com/Bloody-Tears-Fake-Guitar UPDATE! I've made a quick attempt to synthesize some guitars, but I didn't really take the time to EQ them properly, so at times the soundscape becomes really chaotic, it was pretty much just to show how all instruments would sound together. In the end, it's going to be me playing. Actually, I might post what I have now without the guitars, since they're pretty much only muddying things up. Edit: http://media.putfile.com/Bloody-Tears-No-Fake-Guitar There we go! Changes since last update: - a LOT of attention went to the drums, especially their humanization: randomized velocities, multiple drum samples for 1 part to simulate different parts of the drum getting hit (for example; I've used 4 different snare samples: 1 for each stick, a rimshot, and a light tap for ghost notes) - A huge part of the time I've spent on this mix went into EQing, EQing and EQing. Though it might not be very audible because of the lame guitars, I've made sure both kicks and the bass are clearly audible, as well as rolling off a lot of unused frequencies in the melodic instruments, and cutting off every annoying little ringing frequency. Things still left to do: - Still more than half of the mix hasn't been 'humanized', so that's one of the main 'to do's' - Yes, recording the guitar parts, finding a suitable Amp setting, EQing the whole thingamajig, that's going to take a long time.. Anyway: Feeeeeeeeeeeedback me, Seymour! By the way: Toms aren't supposed to be hard-panned all the way from the left to right, right? Just asking, because to me it sounds kinda iffy in the faster fills.
  4. Yes, it's me again to annoy you with trivial questions So anyway, imagine I have this totally rad harpsichord lick, and I want it to stand out by having it swoop from left to right(or vice versa) over the course of 2 measures: Is there any way at all this can be achieved in Reason? It doesn't seem to be possible by right-clicking and selecting "edit automation" because it's grayed out. Am I missing something? Edit: It does seem to be possible to edit the automation of the big 14:2 mixer, but not the 6:2 one, which is what I need, can I solve this in any way?
  5. Well, since I'm no synth man myself, I can't tell you much about a decent kind of synth bass patch. What I DO suggest, is trying to use some dark-sounding pads instead of the full-blown bassline-chord-sound you have going on, while not as prominent as what you have now, I'm sure the combination of a non-distorted bass to play the root/bass note of the chords and some dark ambient pads will prove a much more effective combination for what you're aiming for. I do share your love for daft punk, however despite their music being absolutely awesome, I'm not entirely sure how the judges would react to a similar arrangement, which is why I suggested expanding a bit on it. The point with daft punk is that (If I'm not mistaken), while repeating the same sample over and over (Crescendolls), they manage to emphasize their drums a lot, and drive the song on. If that is what you're aiming for, you should definitely pay attention to sequencing an amazing drum track.
  6. Ah yes, I enjoy it a lot now! It seems pretty good now in terms of both arrangement and production, though I don't consider myself to be the one to say " This is OCremix quality", since I've never gotten accepted myself
  7. I'm sorry, but your URL doesn't seem to work, I'm really curious about your mix though (check out mine a few threads below) Bloody Tears seems pretty darn popular lately Edit: http://puffberries.nrgservers.net/The%20Green%20Tentacle/Red%20Eyed%20Repose.mp3 This seems to be the proper link 0:00- 0:30 okay, decent enough intro, you might want to add some more tension by using some 4/4 crotchet bass-drum stomping (thump thump thump thump), always works nicely, and maybe just before the transition a a really fast snare fill 0:30-1:00 HOLY SH*T what's that sound! The low-end distorted humming is incredibly annoying, and takes up frequency space you should be using for your bass-drum, young man! Unfortunately, melodically or rhythmically, I can't make out much happening, you should definitely add some counter-melodies, since you're basically re-hashing the first thirty seconds with a slow beat and an annoying hum. 1:00-2:00 Okay, break time, we get some new pseudo-clean-guitar melodies here, which is nice, if it WEREN'T for that hum. In the later part I can hear some pretty interesting melodic things happening, so you should hold on to those. Also, the phattening of the drums for the transition is nicely done. 2:00-2:35 AH yes, the main melody, can't remember how often I've heard that now, even the hum seems a bit less annoying now. Nice to see how your song picks up pace here. 2:35-2:50 HALLELUJAH, NO HUM, okay I think you got the point, I'll shut up about the hum now. 2:50 - End basically a re-hash of the previous few sections, it would actually be nice to see you change the chord scheme, as it would add a lot of interest. As a general note, I'd suggest you LOSE the 'acoustic' drum kit, since it sounds just bland and boring ( not only on the production level), and whip out some phat breakbeats, since IMO they would fit this just perfectly (Or at least use techno/trance-like drum samples, even a standard thump thump thump beat would fit this song quite well). Also, did I mention the distorted hum that's probably supposed to be the bass? Get rid of it please.
  8. Edit: *Insert Emo Rant* http://media.putfile.com/Bloody-Tears-Arrangement-MP3 While I've managed to SORT of balance the bass and the bass-drums (both are audible, and at the same time too!), the bass-drum has a more low-end thud, as opposed to the characteristic thumpy attack I'd prefer, and the bass, even though the font used is a picked bass, doesn't have enough high-end to make the pick attack audible, and while I've tried to EQ both, it didn't really work ( Did I mention I suck at production?). Edit: *Insert more Emo Ranting* Anyway, enough with the ranting, tell me how I can improve this mofo (mostly in terms of production, I'm pretty darn proud of the arrangement actually).
  9. Oh geez, Me = stupid, and I should've thought of that earlier. =( Anyway, thanks a lot for the help!
  10. Sure, but I've kinda lost the link to the forum, so you'll have to redirect me ^^'
  11. No I don't have a keyboard, so yes, I have to use my mouse to input the velocity-levels for each note, but as I'm struggling my way through a constant stream of sixteenth notes of the bassline of a 4 minute song ( And I will have to do the same for the drums after this > ), I keep wondering if there isn't some kind of lame command that just randomizes the velocity levels for an entire track. Apart from that, do I REALLY have to make a separate Redrum channel for snare, bass-drum, hi-hats, toms, cymbals, etc if I want to EQ and compress each of them seperately, cause that would just be a major pain in the ass, as well as a friggin channel hog (Drums taking up half of the available channels D= )
  12. That's ok, but only if you're sure it will work. I've got some new recording tools, and only a 5 ms latency now, so if necessary, I'd be happy to re-record the electric guitar parts.
  13. Kind of checking in, I sent a pretty much complete Midi/ WIP version of Tal Tal Heights to Prophet(a long time ago), so he could get the acoustic guitars done, but I haven't heard anything about it since.
  14. Gah, signing in again, after a LONG time. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, but school was kicking my ass ( as Avaris would put it). I still have my Sephiroth WIP lying around, but I think I MIGHT have taken a bit of a too ambitious path with it, so I'll have to start working on it soon again ( That is, if no-one else has applied to mix the song during my absence) Anyway, good to be back
  15. http://media.putfile.com/Bloody-Tears-Arrangement-WIP or http://midishrine.com/midi/14869.mid (putfile retains the quality of the original midi) pretty much done, maybe need to change up some of the drum and bass fills in the latter parts to prevent repetitiveness, but all in all, I think the arrangement is almost done. Now for the hard part, the production
  16. yes! this is absolutely amazing, and I can't think of really any criticism, maybe have the ending break in a bit less sudden, but apart from that, the arrangement and production are (at least through my crappy headphones) top notch. The song retains the mischievous vibes from the original, but has more than enough added rhythmic and melodic context to stand out. Keep up the good work!
  17. http://midishrine.com/midi/14850.mid There we go, this host should work for anyone, also, it is about 20 measures longer than the last one
  18. Guess I'll give you some feedback then, seeing as no-one else takes the time to do so: 00:00 - 00:24 I like the way you've given your own twist to the almost obligatory FF-arpeggio's, it might be a cool idea to have them panning from left to right, to add some juice 00:24 - 00:41 I like where this is going, the synth chords that come in sound really cool, and provide a really nice build-up, definitely keep this in. 00:41 - 01:12 If I may speak freely, the synth patch playing the main melody ( or one of them, seeing as it's probably layered) is extremely annoying, and draws away a lot of attention of the melodic and rhythmic context. Please consider using a patch that doesn't "cut through" as much. Also, as this seems to be the main part where the rhythm picks up, I'd suggest using a bass drum/kick drum sample with much more OOMPH, to accentuate the 4/4 Rhythm that is typical for these kind of techno/ trance songs. 01:12 - 01:44 Nice little break/bridge, but the transition to the next part still seems a bit sudden, you might want to progressively add more melodic and rhythmic elements to build up the tension, you could for example take the synth chords from 00:24 and have them fade in, and maybe change up the drum steps a bit (more). 01:44 - 02:15 I like the bell-like/chimey patch you're using, I just want to hear more of that bass-drum! 02:15 - 02:32 Same criticism about the synth patch here, even though it does seem to fit in better in this part. 02:32 - End No criticism here, you've done a good job of building the mix down and made a nice ending, but maybe you could have the final piano chord linger on just a bit longer with some delay, would be a nice touch
  19. Well, I don't expect anyone to remember me, so I won't annoy people with stories about my past remixing experiences. Fact is, I've finally gotten the urge to do some remixing again, and I've decided to remix one of the most cliched source themes, Castlevania's Bloody Tears. http://media.putfile.com/Bloody-Tears-Arrangement Stylistically, I don't stray too far from the original arrangement, but I've fiddled around with the arrangement and instrumentation enough to give it a 'darker' feeling ( if that's even possible for this song) with added string and piano arpeggio's, you know, the usual stuff, and in the future obviously a kickin rad guitar solo, obviously played live. I won't run it through Reason until I've completely finished it, since sequencing usually takes me way longer than it should, and is pretty annoying to do (to me at least). Tell me what you think, and where I should take this little piece next. It's good to be back.
  20. Guys, I'm just checking in to let you know I'm alive, I've kinda taken a break from remixing, and I did regularly check the topic for updates, but unfortunately the topic in my cache showed no new replies at all.. must've had something to do with the forum changes. I'm going to work hard this afternoon on both WIPs, so I can make the deadline, and Avaris, I'm sorry I don't have anything yet, but it was kinda crucial for me to get a (near)zero-latency recording chain set-up before I would do anything like recording guitar (especially the kind of shredding I would have to do on your track), but I have it now, so I'm all set! Gah, that was a lot of excuses for my laziness, but anyway, I'm back
  21. umm wouldn't it be better, for the sake of authencity, if the solo's were truly improvised on the spot? Or even if you necessarily want the solo's to be pre-written, maybe you should let a guitar player do it himself, since he obviously should have more knowledge of his instrument than you (no offense meant ), as well as being able to incorporate the typical guitar techniques into the solo (bends, harmonics, you name it..)
  22. " A huge supply of tish comes from my chocolate starfish, how about some scat you little twat" I remember getting killed there in the game because I couldn't stop laughing, still cracks me up whenever I hear it
  23. I just read the rules and guidelines for site projects, and umm.. shouldn't we be in WIPs, or maybe even in Site Projects? I think we're coming along nicely, this project might very well be the rise to fame for some of the remixers.
  24. Well the polyrhythms and the dissonance is what makes this piece sound chaotic, but believe me, they're all on purpose. I've actually made two seperate drum tracks so I could have the bass-drums play in a different time signature while the snare and hihats were playing in 4/4 (got that from the band Meshuggah ). In the first part of the piece I just wanted to capture the 'out of control' feeling you get when fighting a really tough boss; at first you're totally dumbstruck by his attacks, but gradually you start to see through his strategy and attacks, and eventually the battle will become easier, and in a similar way, I try to make my piece gradually more accessible and more like a true 'boss-theme'. Oh, and it will DEFINITELY have real guitar
