It is inarguably wrong, we might as well ask the question: Why not rape a prostitute? I don't feel like coughing up the money, and if we drug her up, she won't remember anyway. That is what you are arguing here. It is not needlessly antagonistic, it is insufficiently antagonistic. Maybe that's okay in Amsterdam, but the Internet is so much bigger and Janis' role in raping game musicians and proudly boasting about it is a problem on a forum that so easily engages this issue like some philosophical masturbation. If you, "Lquid Wind," can be effectual, go right ahead, no one's stopping you, but I doubt you can be. The problem here, on this forum, is not the Jack Holes who pirate, they will always do what they do and the only way to fight them is to expose their asses when they so brazenly drop their pants, no, problem is the youngsters who come here and idolize those guys because of hipster rebel nonsense and likening the effect pirates have on REAL PEOPLE to a numerical system in which they refuse to participate. It is inarguably wrong, and saying it's not is ridiculous. People should not be so proud of doing something wrong, do it, if you must, if you're so compelled by your solipsism, but the pride is disgusting and should not be praised or even remotely acknowledged in a positive light.

I have a couple of brilliant friends who design software functions and work in the open source space and offer their creativity for free out of pure joy for the process. That's totally cool. When Radiohead released In-Rainbows, they let people pay what they felt it was worth to them, and offered the album free to anyone who wanted it. Very cool. That is the choice of the creator's to make. We all have that choice. It is not our place to FORCE that choice--that is like raping the creator: Pure A-Hole Maneuver.
-
A-hole was not specifically directed at you, but anyone who refuses to accept their role in this world. Like it or not, you were born into this world, you live in this world, and you will die in this world, and your life will effect the system through the choices you make throughout your existence. Every creator has the CHOICE to put their work out there for the greater community or not--to offer it freely or to not. To not respect that choice is a massive DISrespect to those creators. An irony when you consider that in order for pirates to want something, they must have some measure of respect for the product and indirectly the creator. To fly in the face of that opportunity to respect the wishes of the product's creator is to be a lazy a-hole. And I refuse to respect anyone who so proudly boasts their exploits. We should be ashamed of piracy.
-
Like it or not, you are a part of the system. You can only think you're not if you fool yourself into a narrower scope of thought. Like the idiot that thinks throwing something away is actually throwing something away--that it will never come back or does not exist anymore. That is a narrow and simple-minded thought process. Inconsiderate or ignorant of the broader scope of this world and how life operates. Same as the person who thinks stealing something they'd never pay for is not hurting the manufacturer. You're not some cool, hipster matrix rebel if you think that, you're just an ignorant a-hole.
-
Yes, I can't think of a theft that isn't based around opportunity. Mostly what I hear is that people do not want to pay full price for the stuff they want--that paying full price is inconvenient. I just can't see how that is even a worthwhile discussion: Grow up. Sometimes stuff isn't convenient: Like working out, or calling your mom, or remembering your girlfriends birthday--but that's just how life works. Stop acting like you're from Amsterdam and pay your own way in this world. Or, you know, borrow the money if it's so important right now. Honestly, if you have to have it right now, it should be because you're going to make money off it. If that's the case, then you can easily find some way to borrow the money. But we know that's not the case and that you're just being lazy, like Joslin.

You guys can afford a lot more than you realize: 1) Get a job. 2) Save money by being frugal--that means don't eat out, or if you do, eat cheaply. Do you spend money on going to the movie theater? Or any other entertainment? Stop, save your money. Video games? WoW? Stop, save your money. 3) Are you a student? If you're young and a student, you can get software ridiculously cheap (or even if you're old and a student). For example, you could get Hollywood Strings from East West, arguably one of the best on-the-market string libraries in the world, and you can get it for a mere 250 USD. If you have a part-time job and make 7.50/hr, you could have that software in anywhere between a couple of weeks to a couple of months depending on what your necessary expenses involve. Unless you're a lazy Hollander like Jopen who spends all his money on weed and prostitutes.

Monitor Alternative (primarily for laptops)?
dannthr replied to Damashii!!'s topic in Music Composition & Production
Your music will sound exactly as it would if it were piped through speakers in a room and then re-recorded with a microphone and then sent to your crappy headphones. There are so many levels of conversion from electricity to air pressure back to electricity back to air pressure, it's just... there's no way it will ever sound exactly like it would in the studio. At the very least, it will sound like your mix sent through expensive speakers, recorded back in with expensive microphones, and then sent to cheaper headphones or laptop speakers??? No, it's just silly when you think about it. -
This isn't idle philosophy, this is actually happening, and real people are involved. It is a MASSIVE disrespect to the people who put the care into recording, editing, and programming these libraries. The worst part is, the easiest ones to steal are the ones made by people who reap the least rewards for their efforts. Lucky for Joris, he hides away in Holland where he'll probably never face his victims.

These aren't some random money grubbing companies, these people are our friends, colleagues, and peers. Tonehammer is Troels Folmann, he's not some anonymous company, he's one of us, he's a Game Composer and a super fan of game music! WTF is wrong with you? You're stealing from a game composer and happily admitting it on a website devoted to honoring the work of Game Composers! That is so ass backward!

BTW, I just got a free plugin for being a Shreddage user. Legit Customer Win!

Students get a considerable discount on almost all software worth getting, there really is no reason to pirate. Get a job and quit your whining.

making samples sound of higher quality
dannthr replied to mickomoo's topic in Music Composition & Production
Yeah. 16-bit is the Red Book standard by which all audio CDs are burnt at... Bit depth is about smooth dynamic range. Increasing your bit-depth increases your dynamic range potential by about 6 dB. Poor bit-depth results in sound that seems like it was played over the radio or has a crunchy quality. 1-Bit Depth sound basically means you either hear sound or you don't. Your samples are actually fine, they don't sound crunchy, but they do sound like they were performed by circus robots, and you have to appreciate the fact that as someone interested in creating a smooth performance from samples, you are the performer--you are the band, the conductor, recordist and mixer--so this falls on you. You can't just plug your samples into your music and expect them to sound like a band, that's not how it works, that's not how people work in real life either. You need to coax a performance out of your samples by assembling phrases that have a beginning, middle, and end. By LISTENING to other performers, to recordings, and mimicking those performances as best as you can. Finally, your music is weird--awkward even--and that results in a weird and awkward sound that masks any built in effort on the part of the sample libraries themselves to create a natural sounding performance. -
making samples sound of higher quality
dannthr replied to mickomoo's topic in Music Composition & Production
They probably are 16-bit recordings. The DAW, Speakers, and Sample Rate have nothing to do with your samples sounding like they were recorded, perhaps your speakers to a degree may have a lower dynamic range, it might make 24-bit and 16-bit samples difficult to distinguish, but generally, it probably is 16-bit and if it sounds like it, then everything is working okay. 16-bit is not good enough? I mean, 16-bit is basically required for CDs or iTunes mp3 distributions, but if you're looking for higher quality samples, well, then the bit-depth has to be recorded in from the source. Increasing the bit-depth will not do anything to the audio, only decreasing the bit-depth will have an impact in the dynamic range and quality of your sounds. So there is no way to "improve" the sound. You can get 24-bit samples, they are becoming more and more common now that computers have really made great leaps in the last year and a half or so with regards to RAM. -
There are lots of ways to go about compressing a signal. Two other popular and powerful when well used styles of compression are Parallel Compression (which usually is only effective on drums and lead vox) and Side-Chain Compression. You say you make dance music, well, if you side-chained your bass to your kick, you could compress your bass only when your kick has signal--getting the bass out of the way of the kick and giving your track a lot more head-room overall.

What you can define as video game music is music that has been implemented with a video game or interactivity in mind and there is a program that can teach you that, in fact I teach at a college and I teach that very thing: www.pinnaclecollege.edu -

Which DAW Is Best For Audio Recording?
dannthr replied to SonicSynthesis's topic in Music Composition & Production
Basic recording theory: Your sample rate should be twice your top recorded frequency (look up Nyquist Frequency) + maybe 10-20% for good measure. Every bit added to your bit-depth adds about 6.02dB of dynamic range. 16-bit vs 24-bit is a matter of increasing your dynamic range (your signal to noise ratio) by about 48dB. -
Which DAW Is Best For Audio Recording?
dannthr replied to SonicSynthesis's topic in Music Composition & Production
FL Studio is fine. ProTools is pretty useless unless you're using HD, in my opinion. But if you're using ProTools HD, then you can be certain of a stable recording experience. As far as clipping goes, you're not using your equipment properly. -
Hah, you can see the Rhodes Mark 1 in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07z76IobZY0#t=0m7s

They did: http://www.audioease.com/Pages/mp3%20Altiverb%20Tests/nextDoor.html Those impulses are available to Altiverb users. -
Heh, I just had a Drum Aux with a send to a compression Aux.

Actually, it was cymbal bleed on the Snare track, so I reduced that--I had a Transient Shaper on the Snare that was crunching up the cymbals. Here's my last pass: Waiting by LuIzA (Dannthr Mix)

Parallel Compression, my friend, now that you separated the vox from the overheads, I could go all out: Mix For Fun 2 I just go a little guitar crazy 'cause I like the Foo Fighters and that kind of music... The Overheads are a bit crunchy during the chorus, but, meh, that's about as much as I feel like doing.
