Hey guys lets narrow electronic music to a set of specific stylistic choices and subgenres, and limit our exposure to music
This, but the exact opposite - listen to a ton of music, form what you like, and go from there.
Even if you hate listening to something, do it. It's good for you. Builds character.
And I wouldn't say what I do is dubstep... it's influenced by it sure, but I'm not by any stretch of the imagination Noisia... but I do like the wobble from time to time.
http://soundcloud.com/prototyperaptor/dont-close-your-eyes-preview
so that's that.
anyway, stuff to check out:
Noisia
Skrillex
Uppermost (more house than dubstep, but he's just so GOOD)
Porter Robinson (again, more house than dubstep, but he uses the wobble effectively)
Cookie Monsta (
)Borgore (good for some laughs)
Level 67 is downright disgusting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXas6IsICnE)

I just HATE having to scroll up and down a lot with channels/tracks. There are some timbres that only get used as half-second shots and I would rather integrate all the little odds and ends into one single track.
you would hate seeing some of my project windows....
also, once you're happy with a section you can always bounce it so that it is just a single track.

In my opinion, as a music artist you should want your music to sound good no matter how it's played.
that's the ultimate goal as a producer. (IMO)
also, mono is useful for checking phase issues, but don't mix in it SOLELY.

Yes. The simplest way to understand it is to take a melody or rhythm, chop out each note, and put each note on a different sounding synth/instrument. That'll get the point the across to your ears. The trick is making it sound good.
yup. goes back to Berg/Webern's concept of klangfarbenmelodie (what a word) where basically, you compose using timbres rather than pitches.
however, since skrillex and his audience is still largely tonal, the trick is to do it so that it sounds... not like a 12 tone row, haha
so, take a melodic idea, cut it up, and start adding things in the gaps. I keep trying to demonstrate this in a video, but it's rather difficult to say why exactly you choose to put a certain sound where... just takes some experimentation.
you can also try to "sing" these sound effect passages out loud, then try to recreate them on your synths... this is actually how I start most of my fidget stuff.
also, try not to go overboard with the cutting once you start... for an idea of its proper use listen to wolfgang rather than skrillex...he sounds like you're changing a radio station to a house beat most of the time.
edit: here's one of my new favorite tracks that demonstrates a more melodic style of splicing, rather than skrillex's kitchen sink approach

Alright, here's (probably) the final version.
http://soundcloud.com/prototyperaptor/open
I have a few people who would like to do the vocals, but I'm so sick of this track...
next time, next time
Anyway, no dubstep/fidget elements, but there is a solo, and some more vocoder action...
I'll work harder to be more typical next time
-
biggest mixing problem - trying to overcompensate for bad samples with tons of effects.
especially on drums. punchy drums = less compression, more transients.
-
I love this genre, and you have done it complete and total justice.
A+++ would listen again

WHY DON'T YOU JUST ASK ROB SWIRE TO DO THE VOCALS DUH
problem solved
this is pretty sweet, though... looking forward to updates, but as of right now, I'm not exactly loving this as much as your fidgety-electro-dub-whatever stuffs
oh man I forgot about me and him being pals and all. YOU NEVER KNOW
also the next update will have some more typical Raptor-things in it, as I'd hate to let down your fidgety-electro-dub ear
PS why don't you answer emails
-
Alright, thanks. =D
FWIW, deadmau5 used FXPansion's Strobe as the main synth for that track.
So there's a high probability that that specific white noise is just a straight sample from it, run through some outboard filters.
...or it's just a vengeance sample haha

I got to be honest I just didn't like this one at all.
This was like if T Pain or *cringe* Ke$ha covered Crush 40.
Ouch, that comparison really hurts, man. Watch out where you throw those names around or you'll severely injure someone haha
Anyway, I knew that this would be one of those all or nothing mixes, that you'd either hate it or love it.
But, to remain true to the sound I'm going for, it's going to be pretty far from the original.
TBH, I don't think Johnny's original vocals would work, same for most of the actual track. It's too "metal" for the more glam-rock sound of Pendulum.
For instance, there's no way a guitar solo would fit the mold any more than the palm muting would. At least for as strictly as I'm going for their sound.
Think of it as if a different band wrote the original moreso than a cover. Kind of weird but it makes more sense to me that way. Basically if you're a hardcore fan of the original, I didn't think you'd like this!
IDK if I'll even finish it - just wanted to get some feedback.
So thanks for speaking up, and glad you liked some of my other stuff!
you vocoded vocals cause of the compression.I vocoded vocals cause it sounds cool.
-
I dunno, the intro instantly struck me as... I dunno. Flat.
found the problem in my mastering chain... stupid 4x oversampling...
so the new one should sound better, hopefully.
(updated OP)
mr. belmont, though I am a huge fan of your vocals, I don't think your style is quite what I'm looking for.
but feel free to prove me wrong!
bring it haha
-
So I've wanted to do this track in the style of Pendulum's "In Silico" for like... forever...
So here it is in a WIP version - it needs the bridge and a final chorus.
Basically, I'm unsure of the vocals, and I'm currently talking with some friends that might be able to pull of the "rob" sound a bit better.
But I wanted to share it and see what you all thought before I totally change it... haha
If you don't know the original track, GO PLAY SONIC ADVENTURE, seriously, you won't regret it.
Crush 40 is awesome.
edit: update final?
-
Is it just me, or has the bar for electronica at OCR just been RAISED SKY HIGH? ...Plus, it's reminiscent of some of my favorite artists, namely Skrillex and Noisia.
yes, and yes. I hear Noisia all over the place with some fidgety Skrillex in there for good measure.
Awesome tune all around.
A+++ would listen again

actually he left the company one year ago
that's depressing, I really liked FFXIII's soundtrack.
...one of the only things I liked about that game...
-
this is really good stuff!
I especially love the epic signature solos - no one does it like chth. I mean benjamin.
also I'm a sucker for dat chord progression. 25 or 6 to 4 much?
unfortunately this means you have to make more music now please kthnx

(or how looming the deadline is.)
sometimes I tell people something is close to being done/finished, just so I have that pressure to finish... it's the only way to get stuff done sometimes
-
remixes average I'd say sometime between 30-40 hours. usually happens all at once, too.
FF7 - 3 days
Zelda - 2 days
etc
original stuff can take anywhere from forever to an afternoon.
ghosts in the machine for instance was pretty much written in one day... then tweaked for a coupla weeks.
on the other hand, I have an orchestral project that's been in the making for 2 years.
but then again that's probably because of SCORE PREP ugh

Why can't art be entertainment? Why can't entertainment be art? Why can't everything be a masterpiece?
Dragonball Evolution.

favorite instrument to hear: trombone, hands down.
just when I thought you couldn't get any more awesome, you go and do dis...
I was actually working on something directly inspired by that song. GET OUT OF MY HEAD CHTH
as for me
play:
trombone
piano/synths
hear:
cello/string orchestra
lo-fi drums (rokysopp/massive attack and company)
piano (satie particularly)
choir (texturalist stuff like ligeti)
-
this is really awesome - loving the drum breakdown section and the couple of sections where you really let the vocoder loose.
a great way to end the year
-
haha I love you guys... but yes. it's still coming.
as soon as I can figure out what to tell you.
-
-
What happened to this? Still in queue?
I dunno, really. I think they have it, but it was never paneled? Both this and the FF7 track just disappeared.
oh well, stuff happens, I understand. I'm sure they'll find it eventually.
probably.

"It's a-me, Mario." *molotov*
why do these crazy re-imaginings keep me coming back for more?
post your instruments!

I see your five and raise you ten!
(FWIW Shaggy, old buffet clarinets, especially the really old ones, are worth a-LOT in the band world)
I play trombone... hurray for sitting in orchestra and never playing.
Could be worse I suppose... I could be a percussionist!
