  1. five dollars. i'll paypal it to you if you want.

I see your five and raise you ten! :D

(FWIW Shaggy, old buffet clarinets, especially the really old ones, are worth a-LOT in the band world)

I play trombone... hurray for sitting in orchestra and never playing.

Could be worse I suppose... I could be a percussionist!

  2. Hey guys lets narrow electronic music to a set of specific stylistic choices and subgenres, and limit our exposure to music :<

This, but the exact opposite - listen to a ton of music, form what you like, and go from there. :D

Even if you hate listening to something, do it. It's good for you. Builds character.

And I wouldn't say what I do is dubstep... it's influenced by it sure, but I'm not by any stretch of the imagination Noisia... but I do like the wobble from time to time.

    so that's that.

    anyway, stuff to check out:

    Noisia

    Skrillex

Uppermost (more house than dubstep, but he's just so GOOD)

Porter Robinson (again, more house than dubstep, but he uses the wobble effectively)

    Cookie Monsta (

    )

    Borgore (good for some laughs)

Level 67 is downright disgusting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXas6IsICnE)

  3. Yes. The simplest way to understand it is to take a melody or rhythm, chop out each note, and put each note on a different sounding synth/instrument. That'll get the point the across to your ears. The trick is making it sound good.

yup. goes back to Berg/Webern's concept of klangfarbenmelodie (what a word) where basically, you compose using timbres rather than pitches.

however, since skrillex and his audience is still largely tonal, the trick is to do it so that it sounds... not like a 12 tone row, haha

so, take a melodic idea, cut it up, and start adding things in the gaps. I keep trying to demonstrate this in a video, but it's rather difficult to say why exactly you choose to put a certain sound where... just takes some experimentation.

you can also try to "sing" these sound effect passages out loud, then try to recreate them on your synths... this is actually how I start most of my fidget stuff.

also, try not to go overboard with the cutting once you start... for an idea of its proper use listen to wolfgang rather than skrillex...he sounds like you're changing a radio station to a house beat most of the time.

edit: here's one of my new favorite tracks that demonstrates a more melodic style of splicing, rather than skrillex's kitchen sink approach

  4. WHY DON'T YOU JUST ASK ROB SWIRE TO DO THE VOCALS DUH

    problem solved

this is pretty sweet, though... looking forward to updates, but as of right now, I'm not exactly loving this as much as your fidgety-electro-dub-whatever stuffs

oh man I forgot about me and him being pals and all. YOU NEVER KNOW

also the next update will have some more typical Raptor-things in it, as I'd hate to let down your fidgety-electro-dub ear

PS why don't you answer emails

  5. I got to be honest I just didn't like this one at all.

This was like if T Pain or *cringe* Ke$ha covered Crush 40.

Ouch, that comparison really hurts, man. Watch out where you throw those names around or you'll severely injure someone haha

Anyway, I knew that this would be one of those all or nothing mixes, that you'd either hate it or love it.

But, to remain true to the sound I'm going for, it's going to be pretty far from the original.

TBH, I don't think Johnny's original vocals would work, same for most of the actual track. It's too "metal" for the more glam-rock sound of Pendulum.

For instance, there's no way a guitar solo would fit the mold any more than the palm muting would. At least for as strictly as I'm going for their sound.

Think of it as if a different band wrote the original moreso than a cover. Kind of weird but it makes more sense to me that way. Basically if you're a hardcore fan of the original, I didn't think you'd like this!

IDK if I'll even finish it - just wanted to get some feedback.

So thanks for speaking up, and glad you liked some of my other stuff!

you vocoded vocals cause of the compression.

I vocoded vocals cause it sounds cool. :D

  6. So I've wanted to do this track in the style of Pendulum's "In Silico" for like... forever...

So here it is in a WIP version - it needs the bridge and a final chorus.

Basically, I'm unsure of the vocals, and I'm currently talking with some friends that might be able to pull of the "rob" sound a bit better.

But I wanted to share it and see what you all thought before I totally change it... haha

If you don't know the original track, GO PLAY SONIC ADVENTURE, seriously, you won't regret it.

    Crush 40 is awesome.

    edit: update final?

  7. remixes average I'd say sometime between 30-40 hours. usually happens all at once, too.

    FF7 - 3 days

    Zelda - 2 days

    etc

original stuff can take anywhere from forever to an afternoon.

ghosts in the machine for instance was pretty much written in one day... then tweaked for a coupla weeks.

on the other hand, I have an orchestral project that's been in the making for 2 years.

but then again that's probably because of SCORE PREP ugh

  8. favorite instrument to hear: trombone, hands down.

just when I thought you couldn't get any more awesome, you go and do dis...

I was actually working on something directly inspired by that song. GET OUT OF MY HEAD CHTH

    as for me

    play:

    trombone

    piano/synths

    hear:

    cello/string orchestra

lo-fi drums (rokysopp/massive attack and company)

    piano (satie particularly)

    choir (texturalist stuff like ligeti)
