  1. Oooooor.... you can wait for the new Impact Soundworks rhythm guitar library which will be like 1/8 the price. :)

    http://zirconstudios.com/filedump/GuitarLibrary_Test_00.mp3

...that's very close. I've been wanting that groove library of yours, but I just don't have the funds as of yet.

One thing, though, is this the final library, or do you have more to add? The rhythm chunks around :20 and 1:37 seem a bit...robotic. Call me a stickler, I suppose, haha.

Anyway, you guys do good work, I'll definitely be checking it out.

Also, you can run a synth through an amp sim and get pretty close to a guitar lead sound. Try using an organ or a rhodes...

  2. Yeah, and even if you get better samples you're probably not going to be satisfied - IMO it'd be easier to collab/hire a guitar player to record the part you want rather than to buy and mess with an insane library. (eg: http://www.prominy.com/)

I went through a phase where I really wanted realistic guitar tones - something that sounded like the chunkiness of Rammstein's rhythm guitars.

You can't really do that with samples, unfortunately. It's hard enough to do it with an actual guitar...

But, if you absolutely can't get an actual guitarist to play the eighth-note chugga chugga you want then, yeah, prominy lpc is what I recommend.

It's incredibly complex, and you'll need a decent amp sim, but it can sound pretty good if you put lots of time into it.

    Good luck!

  3. Is that Vincent Price I hear at 4:13 and on? :D

Haha, yes, I was wondering if someone would pick that up - it most certainly is the one and only Mr. Price on the evil laugh.

Thanks everyone for all your comments and encouragements; for you kirby 64 fans keep an eye out - I've been working on one of the more requested tunes here for a while. It should be done next week or so...

    until then, peace

  4. I own QLSO, Kontakt, and some ProjectSAM libraries...

If you want the best brass in the biz (IMO), ProjectSAM is the only way to go.

If you got Kontakt and the ProjectSam brass library you'd be good for a while - the VSL string samples that come with Kontakt are great. (and the woodwinds are passable)

It's a bit expensive, but the sam brass really is 100X better than QLSO.

    (YMMV, of course.)

  5. Oh thats no problem, I can totally instruct. But this once again comes down to plugin quality, hardware quality etc. My reverbs, eqs, and compressors, are all hardware replicas 1x1 perfection = high quality mix. Ive made good mixdowns in reason and better ones in cubase with uad, creamware, and powercore plugins and the results are insanely huge in contrast. Im not necessarily saying im better at leveling your tracks, but I have some nice tools at my disposal and am putting it out there for use to those that want it.

Sort of off topic for a bit, but do you find yourself prefering the UAD plugs over the creamware/powercore ones? Just asking because I'm thinking about sinking some money into one of the above and I've heard great things about all of 'em...

Anyway, I'm probably going to submit something for this - just waiting to see if my trumpet player is going to be able to record before the deadline.

I'd also be more than happy to supply some HQ orchestral parts if people want/need them.

    good luck everybody

  6. My friend said that it was racist. Well, can't argue, but see, the white man was trying to control the aliens and experiment on them; the thug Nigerians were barbaric. I won't lie, when the women were prostituting w/ aliens, I couldn't help butt think "racist" and I'm not even a conspiracy theorist.

The movie was not racist. Of course the thug Nigerians were barbaric - you just said they were thugs, no?

If anything I felt the movie had too many obvious, slap-you-in-the-face "RACISM IS BAD, GUISE" motifs going on. There were some allusions I felt could have been directed more subtly by Michael Bay.

  7. You have seen Sunshine, I hope?

That movie was made by John Murphy's soundtrack.

Too bad it failed at the box office...

Also, another thought just occurred to me: did anyone else get lots of HL2 references in District 9?

I know it came from the Halo movie remnants, but it seemed to me a lot of the weapons, effects, and even the "feel" was very...Valve....

  8. This thread has probably been done before but I'm curious now. It would be cool to know what all the good bits and bad bits were about them all.

EDIT- As techy as you want, I wanna know everything! ^o^

A DAW is a very personal choice. The one you pick will largely depend upon how you are going to work. I myself see DAWs as nothing more than glorified sequencers because I use all my own vsts - nothing "built in."

So I judge DAWs primarily on their piano roll/notation strength as well as mixing and playlist abilities. Basically how well they perform as an "arranger."

And, despite many haters, I find FL to have the best damn piano roll in the biz - and working with the playlist is a treat compared to say, Reason. (shudder)

The fx routing is a bit strange, but they're improving upon it greatly in the new betas.

Keep in mind this is mostly midi work; I don't know if I'd recommend FL to someone recording lots of live tracks.

I think I liked Reaper the best for that.

Just remember, it all comes down to 1s and 0s - no one DAW will sound better than another simply due to the engine...it's the built in effects/instruments that are better.

So go buy synth squad and omnisphere and don't look back!

    kidding, kidding...

    my 2c

  9. i played the demo and when it ended i said ok i am going to buy this

    Yeah, pretty much this.

I did think the combat system was going to be a bit stupid at first...but then I was impressed with how COOL one button can make the dark knight look. Definitely liking how games are taking cues from 300 with all the slow motion badassery.

I think the detective mode could be awesome, but I know that it will eventually turn into nothing but a gargoyle finder, or some stupid predetermined set piece that the developers want you to find. Maybe if they went CRAZY into detail and let you scan and interact with EVERYTHING...but this is going to be nothing more than a cheap way to further the story ala doom 3.

still going to get it, though

  10. I was most impressed by the fact that the movie had such a low budget to have such ridiculous CG.

I mean, I can't help but feel it was kind of a big middle finger to Transformers 2 and GI Joe who had budgets with an additional digit...

Underlying feelings aside, it was an excellent movie. Not better than Hurt Locker, but pretty damn close. Go see both. :-P

  11. hey, thanks for the comments, so now I'll return the favor:

    First of all, the good:

-it's a very stylish piece, production values are pretty good, and the buildups and placement of the melodies is pretty much perfect. no annoying harsh end here...haha

    That said,

-I think your kick is too clicky; more bass and less 1khz would make it more "faxing berlin-esque" if that's what you're going for.

-add a delay fx send, make it stereo bounce, send your stabs to that. mix to taste. this will add more depth to the stabs

-the piano feels very robotic to me - the writing doesn't help. if the chords were a bit more flowing, it would help tremendously

other than that, there's not much to say except that I really like it. Keep it up!

  12. Hey all, I'm back with a highly danceable mix of Grinder, from the Red Alert 2 OST.

I actually started this after hearing the awesome mix by Prince of Darkness and realizing that RA2 has more songs than just hell march...haha

This was also a "test," if you will, of my new equipment - the first official mix in the new studio!

I've been listening to a ton of Justice, Deadmau5, Sebastian, etc etc and I felt I had to make something like that... so here we go:

    edit: new version is up

    http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=866156&songID=7928194

    edit

Turn it up loud...and add a sub for maximum power!

    to do list:

-some transitions piss me off, and I'm going to make them work

    -additional drum percussion parts

    enjoy

  13. That's odd, it's been fine ever since I DL'd the new installer.

    Know of any workarounds?

A quick check of the support forums tells me to install the new version...which I've done many times.

There has to be some trick that I've missed out on...or maybe I'm just screwed until september :?

It's just weird that sometimes, in some songs, it will crash. But upon reloading of that song, no issues whatsoever. It's like playing russian roulette with how much work you're going to get done

  14. I'd just like for them to fix the set of problems they unleashed with the new beta. Namely, the "click anywhere in the play list" access violation error of DEATH. They said they fixed it with a new installer, but no dice here.

    Also, automatic delay compensation.

...but the wrapper thing would be nice too. +1

  15. Alright, I've got to resurrect this thread for more opinions on the monitors.

Forget about the sub, it was a stupid idea. I just need some quality speakers and am going to buy something very soon.

So here it is, the line is drawn: mackie or krk?

leaning toward mackie at this point in time even though the price is more simply because it...well, because it's a mackie :-P

    your thoughts?

  16. I've just started to get into "serious" anime recently thanks to my suitemates, but I've thoroughly enjoyed Ergo Proxy, Death Note, and the Hellsing Ultimate OVAs.

Death Note has an epic, well written story. Very suspense oriented. Totally different than DBZ or the like - I was surprised at how...weird...it was. Imagine Sherlock Holmes gaining the power to kill everyone...and doing so.

Ergo Proxy is a cyberpunk post apocalyptic journey. It's got lots of philosophy and is quite thought provoking. If you liked Bioshock I'd bet you'd like this.

Hellsing Ultimate is just ridiculous. Nazi Vampires and zombies with guns meets the matrix. yeah. And the main character is the universe's biggest badass. He could beat up Chuck Norris. seriously

They're going to get me to watch Ghost in the Shell soon, so I'd imagine it's good as well.

    my 2c

  17. I'm getting a very Black Mages-esque vibe from this (esp. during that organ solo) - that's a good thing.

Your strings sound great, everything is well balanced, though you could tone your hi-hat down a few notches with some EQ.

Your drum writing seems fine to me, and I am hearing plenty of source material.

The only fault I can find is the length, and you already know about that.

This is grade A stuff, man... I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this.
