  1. his experience of kung fu training has got to be the only reason they are considering him, cause i don't see the connection between him and spike spiegle at all. spike is like the coolest mofo in the world and keanu can't live up to that. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ on wiki, it says spike was based on Yusaku Matsuda i can't look at him and think keanu reeves http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w304/b-sidecom/myspace/f7c95974.jpg here's more http://www.midnighteye.com/features/yusaku_matsuda.shtml
  2. http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/07/30/rumor-keanu-reeves-as-spike-in-cowboy-bebop-movie/ your thoughts please
  3. i'm down for sharing a room with ya. 4 to a room sounds like a good number to me. my friend, the drummer, wants to come, but he supposedly has a show on new years eve, so he's up in the air at the moment.
  4. i feel you. i can totally see people taking advantage of it and hurting employees as well the companies products you sell. i was just shocked because at MTSU, my recording school, they told me its 15% above cost for kids in the program, as well as for Audio Engineering Society members. i'll have to rethink paying for that membership next semester. well i'm going to hold out a bit longer, but your good remarks are leaning me towards doing it. when you do get further into it, please let me know what you think are its strong and weak points. i need to find some good woodwinds, and that demo was pretty nice. are the loops just a small part of the collection or is it pretty big chunk? appreciate it.
  5. see, my mac is loaded. i have 2 320 sample drives that i decided to stripe, and i am about to push them over the half way mark, which i never wanted to do. i should have planned better for expansion. so i take it that you have it. what are the positive and negatives? and how many gigs of loops are there? ...and i just wanted to ask you about Guitar Center, because they gave me a super hard time about using my AES discount for 15% above cost. i have always gotten hooked up with deals there and this guy was telling me that they've changed their policy. its news to me. thanks bgc. peace
  6. zircon, i agree, i was recommending for him to wait on a dedicated audio interface and go with a midi controller that had a simple way of getting audio in. good suggestions with the presonus - you could totally get that and a cheaper midi interface to save some money.
  7. i think the apogee is the best deal out there. you can get a duet with like 2 ins and outs or or an ensemble with 4 preamps and 8 ins and outs. you are probably buying this on the net huh? - so i'll post links for ya. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Duet/ http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Ensemble/ - now in my opinion the duet is cool for the complete hobbyist or people who want to use it for a laptop system - the ensemble is where it is at. but because of the expense, i would suggest for you to get something like the xstation http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/XS61/ because it is a midi controller that is an audio interface, with 2 preamps. it also functions as a synth and an fx unit. most midi controllers have no sounds but this one actually does! i know bt even uses it...and novation has pretty decent bread and butter synth sounds. if you got this, a daw (with sounds like logic), and a mic with your mac pro...you'll be set. When you want to spend the money for an ensemble later down the road you can...and you will still have your xstation act as your midi controller and synth, so you won't have wasted any money. now if you wanted to get another interface, i would recommend a motu. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/828mk3/ only 2 preamps unlike the apogee. but all you would need is a mixer with preamps to get more channels in. whatever you do for an audio interface, make sure it is firewire. ************************** now for mics i noticed in a thread the DJP bought one of these guys http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/NT1A/ but i also hear good things about http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/NT3/ http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/C1000S/ http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Bluebird/ - being that its your vocal mic...spend the most you can on it
  8. ah i see. giving us the low down in advance. nice. i was actually still referring to the VI ONE when i was asking about the big fish stuff, sorry i wasn't clear. i might do it. 20 gigs for a hundred bucks is nice...but that producers pack deal is pretty insane too. thats like 80% off. ..i just have to convince myself to use the hard drive space for the VI ONE sounds that probably aren't exactly first grade.
  9. snappleman is right about the 57. everyone should have one...they are about as cheap as it gets too, so no reason not to get it. but if your planning on recording voice, i wouldn't use a 57. you need a condenser mic. i would check out akg or rode for your price range. and not to get you in over your head, but you need to make sure that whatever interface you get that you have a preamp to feed your mic or you won't be hearing anything. a lot of audio interfaces have them but there are those that don't.
  10. i thought about saying something about not minding if the video was boring, but i didn't want to offend. ha. all that other stuff (drum samples, synth design, mixing) is great to talk about, and you really should start having videos where you focus on a specific topics. but i still want to see your whole creative process in all of its glory. although, the problem that sort of arises when your working on a song is that you may start to feel like you have to explain yourself more thoroughly over basics for all the cats who are new to recording, which will also probably kill the work flow a bit. i would like to see you do an advanced video where you work with a song and just stress creative and production issues. and then maybe have a more beginners video for people who are new daws, where you give them ideas to build a remix - which your first video kind of was. speaking for myself here, but i really think the more experienced will benefit in their production from watching you in action, in terms of the choices you make while creating, and the beginners will too no doubt, its just they will have to come back to understand it better. big up for what your doin, respek (been watching too much ali g)
  11. +1 watching you work on a track that your serious about would be interesting
  12. thanks bgc keep them coming _______________________ on the big fish stuff - i noticed there are loops. do you know how many loops there are relative to instruments? the site doesn't really say. do you own it? i don't really need the sounds but, it wouldn't hurt for the price. ...also, i'm not finding the deal for it on the website. i guess i would have to contact the store?
  13. that sucks. most apple stores i have been to have a midi controller setup with logic. and every apple store should, especially for your kind of investment. i would go back or find another that will let you play around with some sounds. guitar center should carry it as well. i would call ahead though. ...but you should really hear the things your getting and start making decisions on what sounds are going to work for you and which ones won't, so you can better spend your money on sample libraries down the road. when i got logic years ago, before they ever had displays setup at apple, they didn't include all the synths and sounds...i was a novice and, i tell you, pretty surprised that i had nothing to make music with. if no one helps you with the program, here's a couple basic things - launch the software instrument but clicking on the input of a software instrument channel and setting the instrument. if you bring up the library tab on the right with the media icon, you can easily go through all the presets of which ever plugin is clicked last, and its highlighted in white...just click another plug in the inspector on the left to change the list. and have at it. you can also open the apple loops browser in another tab on the left and listen to your loops. and last, there are channelstrip preset that can also be accessed from the library by clicking on the top of the channel strip. - if you need help, just click on the help menu list at the top and bring up the pdf. and about doing studio foam...be careful. you can make a room a sound a lot worse by killing all your high frequencies and your ambience. if you have parallel walls but a decent ambience, go with diffusors if you can. you can build them yourself, or use things like bookcases. all they do is displace the sound in random, uneven patterns so you don't have standing waves. a well-made vocal booth although isn't a bad idea, but isn't necessary. lots of singers track in the control room with headphones on. if your tracking and start hearing a wall slapback...then either find a different place in the room and reset the mic, or fix your wall. i see engineers using u-haul blankets pretty effectively. i saved money and went to walmart and got those bed eggshells to use as diffusors for parallel walls. it was like 10-20 bucks each. have fun with it...and don't throw away your money unless your sure its what you need.
  14. ah, so many drummers. even anso good drummers make me a happy bass player.
  15. lots of stuff here - i went back to take out all my biases on logic - you decide you shouldn't really be mixing on just headphones. they are a valuable tool, but i see them more as a magnifying glass and they can be unreliable with clarity and low frequencies. i also think its best to have a computer separate for audio work anyway, anything else you have on it can potentially make it unstable. if you go with a mac, check out OWC.com for ram and hard drives. save your money, the guys at macrumors dig them and they are good with warranties - its lifetime on the ram. since you are just starting out, more than likely, whatever route you choose to go with, be it FL or logic, you will probably learn that program and want to stay in it, or, better put, be stuck in. i wouldn't even bother with garageband, because for 500...and its like 200-300 if your student, you get sooooo much more with logic. go to an apple store and play around with all the sounds they give to you with it. its like 6 synths, electric piano, organ, clav, and a drum machine program. a super nice convolution reverb, every effect you would want (there's like 50 of em, even a guitar amp sim, which is decent), tons of sampler instruments with a great sampler, and i think its like 20 gigs of loops and sfx. the learning curve is much easier in 8 from 7, but it still isn't a walk in the park. another great thing, since computers can handle so much native power these days is that people are really psyched about OSX 10.6, because they are going to integrate 8 cores a lot more efficiently. and you can bet logic is going to benefit from this before anyone else. and all the points about having a good room to listen and decent digital audio converters is important too. if you can get in a room with higher ceilings, away from corners, and not have parallel walls with flutter echo (just clap to hear flange) you will be ok. you can worry about the digital audio converter when you buy a better audio interface. apogee makes a great interface that is tailored for logic and they are known for their great converters. i'm also pretty happy with my motu 828. like it was said earlier, it might be better to start small and expand. you will definitely be able to make higher quality recordings with a mac and logic, as opposed to a pc and FL. but this is also under the assumption that you will be wanting to do more audio. you get more midi sounds in logic too, but for 3,000 more, is it worth it? you decide. but please go with whatever you feel is right, i just wanted to make the point that whatever decision you make, will shape your production skills and entrance into all of this, so try to be informed so your not wasting money. get some reading material. you can hit me up on IRC if you want any advice - i wish i had someone help when i was doing this years ago.
  16. i forgot to add... if you want quality mixes...you need to get decent studio monitors. if you can't rely on what your listening with your as good as dead in the water.
  17. bahamut, some suggestions from my perspective. if your doing a lot of audio then i agree with snappleman that FL might actually hurt you. its real intuitive and has an easier learning curve for electronic things but it gets kinda backwards when compared to other daws. if you could go mac, (which is definitely a great invest with an 8 core) you should go logic just cause of all the great plugs and sample intruments and loops (definetly the most bang for your buck - you get 40 gigs worth of sounds!.) but cash is always the issue when you talk about a mac pro. i think sonar or cubase are the better choices for pc. stay away from pro tools. i know m-audio has gotten a lot better, but years ago i got an oxygen and had some of the keys sticking in the first week. i promptly took it back and got a novation which i love. now, you need an audio interface to get your audio into your daw. here's an all in one solution that you can use and build on. http://www.novationmusic.com/products/hardware_synths/xstation/ this is a midi controller, that has a synth built in, with fx, and has an audio interface. when you want to get a more advance audio interface you can just keep the synth and midi controller. with this, a daw, and mic. you'll be set. plus the ability to get hands on with a synth is the only way to learn. if your going to be doing acoustic stuff, like voice and guitar, you should also make sure you get a condenser mic. These capture high frequencies better and just to let you know, they are fragile, very unlike a dynamic sm58 mic which you could just throw against a wall and it would be fine. good luck
  18. probably a little early...but maybe we should start another thread for jamspace, so we can get a consensus for material and available performers. i wish i could see you rock out those vibes or marimba drumultima oh, hells ya
  19. i'll chalk it up on the list geoffrey. are there any good drummers coming that can hold their own? i am gonna try to get my friend to come down who's an awesome drummer and a video game addict.
  20. just let me know the songs, and i can provide bass but it would have to be serious, with serious players to take more time than just an winging an improv
  21. no culture lost everything like zeal did. other cultures changed but had zeal kept going on, then 1000 AD would be a lot different. do you disagree? the point is different from the quote sure, but it strikes a chord with me and takes me back to zeal. also, i always got that zeal didn't really care about the earthbound ones, its not like they were waging war against them...they just shut them out. And weren't they the minority compared to the rest of the population across the planet also? sorry vagrance...have to support my cause here. maybe i'm biased too because i agree with the point of the voice clip because of my anthropology class. but to me its like...we shouldn't lose things like zeal...we must try to understand our past better and the cultures that have shaped our world...or it will forever be forgotten. ...like floating continents and magic. come now
  22. i am going to go against the grain here, i really like the voice, it comes out of nowhere, and IMO is completely relevant to the game. we are talking about zeal, a culture that died out. there's a connection, and i think it makes your mix all the better. i know i am way late on the scene and assuming your going to submit this soon, but figured i would say some words. once the tambourine hits i dig the entire ending with the organ, changing rhythms, and slick bass line. maybe a bit more ear candy but my real beef is with the intro. the sound you got is cool but it is very abrupt, even something simple like a crash would help. once the beat hits its feel a bit anti-climatic...i would either try to get more contrast happening or hold back the melody and build it. its really the first section that feels weak to me. i can also hear some delays going on but they aren't really coming out. a neat trick is to use a compressor sidechained to a channel to have the delays softer (duck) when you don't want them clogging up your mix. in all i think a stronger beginning and maybe a bit more ear candy could take this over the top. good stuff vagrance
  23. tensei according to their site on myspace if you fly into DCA (National Airport) http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&um=1&q=dca&near=Reagan+National+Airport&fb=1&cid=0,0,3202931013501568938&sa=X&oi=local_result&resnum=1&ct=image you should be able to get a shuttle to the hotel. "The Hilton Mark Center actually offers a shuttle (really this time!) to and from DCA airport (commonly referred to as "Reagan" or "National") if you need a ride. The shuttle stops near the "gate 5 and 9" baggage claims at :20 and :40 after the hour. Please remember that driving is a tipping service, and you probably won't be able to get picked up at 3am unless you call the hotel. In the event you can't / won't fly into DCA, you can fly into Dulles (IAD) or BWI. Please remember that directions are a bit more complicated to the hotel and no shuttle service is available if you can't fly into DCA. Basic directions from BWI involve getting yourself to 95 south (you can use 195 west from the airport) and then follow the car directions." --- just to note, their was a part that said the shuttle stops at :50...so not sure which one it is. ---
  24. oa told me all about it...so i'm in. wanna become a part of the community. mixes coming soon. i'll be driving from nashville in a tiny hybrid...so if anyone needs a ride at 50-60 mpg, let me know. i know tweek is in nashville...has he gone before? and about the jam thing...i'll bring a bass but no way can i bring a rig. do they provide?
