  1. not to scare you or anything but your gonna have to study...a lot more than high school. rule of thumb is 2 hours of study for every 1 hour of class for a C level and it supposed to be 4 hours for an A...but i find that 3 is usually good. and in just my experience write everything down a teacher ever says...you never know what they might ask on a test. i had a history of recording industry class and i was asked one question out of a 50 question test about an obscure drummer that played in an obscure prog band in the 70's that the teacher fancied. now this was like one sentence out of a two hour lecture, but i had feeling it would come back - and obviously this was not in the textbook. and don't worry about a major right now. its ok to start undeclared or try a major out for a class and decide if its what you want to do. good luck
  2. i wanna hold out for kain or edge but i'm in. good work andrew. oh and i don't think you meant to put cecil in twice did you?
  3. i've been a winamp user forever i've hated itunes with a passion since it organized my entire library into in unknown artist, unknown folder. it was like 20,000 files! oh well, thats in the past. sadly there was no undo on that one. also itunes colors the sound...which is good and bad. if anyone knows any good mac apps for mp3s i am all ears cause i have yet to find one i like with the simplicity of winamp. but i do agree with you on the searching in the middle of the track thing. only bothers me when i am playing a 60 min APE file. but it sucks.
  4. killer stuff robotaki! i love the palette of instruments you have here. i feel that intro is bit long. its cool the way it is but i think you can have much more effective beginning by shortening it. i would have the drums hit when the static dissappears. then bring back thos piano arpeggios in a recapitulation later in the tune. the glitch drums are great. i hope you have section that really brings them out as the focal point. can't wait to hear more. oh and make sure to throw up a link with the source tune - try to find some more spots to bring out the source cause your borderline i think right now.
  5. there should be an installer that directs you for everything. installs the library and kontakt player if you don't already have it. then it will show up as a standalone and the usually plugs depending on what you tell it to install. you also have to drag the data files from each dvd to the library folder or you won't get any sounds. note: for leopard you have to use a patch that can be downloaded at native instruments website. - i had to do the leopard thing so my installation was a bit dif.
  6. just out of curiousity does anyone own an imported dojin cd that has the developer mentioned for copyright? i'd like to see the back of something like this... http://vgmdb.net/album/5702 to know if it was licensed or not. - especially if it is sold like this one is.
  7. i agree with you and thankfully that is the case that works out here. but copyrights being as they are, i still think its important to respect them. its kinda weird with overseas copyrights, but i'm sure that square-enix wouldn't allow their music to be used in any form in japan without their expressed permission whether its a dojin band or not. i'm not trying to undermine you at all here, i'm just suggesting to anyone who does take these songs, to be cautious with them and to know that they probably do need permission to license the songs. its not entirely ocr's call.
  8. so i guess there aren't any stipulations to the original composers having to sign off on such things? isn't it the copyright owner who makes these decisions? ocremix is fun and all, but if things get transplanted into games, then won't be a line crossed that's a little too close to its initial form? just some wishful thinking here...i am all for ocremix to be out there and get exposure and credit but its just those lawyers that ruin everything.
  9. i'll would love to rock the bass on this does sixto make it out these things?
  10. i think a bit more hifi is fine. downgrading the sounds is easy enough. and i actually prefer these osts that come out and usually sound cleaner than the music directly from the game. i might try both steps to see what kind of results i get. i like the idea of taking the raw wavs that they had but i might get a more realistic instrument by ripping notes from songs. albeit more work too probably. i'll let you know how it goes. thanks a bunch.
  11. yeah, i've made just a couple adjustments to two instruments real quick. i will get in there some more and will upload. i'll check out snessor. although, it doesn't seem to be able to solo any of the instruments. i have been using snes9x on the mac and it does this...so maybe i can hijack the audio and edit it later. i just got kontakt 3 and plan to get deeper in it next month. i have been an exs guy for a long time and its still powerful especially with redmatica's keymap, but kontakt has my interest at the moment. so yeah, i'll definitely make some attempts in the next month or so. is there any methodology i should be employing when i get started? just wishful thinking here, but maybe starting another thread suited to this for others to share would really cool. i don't know if the community would look down upon it or not with sampling/copyright stuff. idk how all that pans out. might be better to keep this on the dl. but yeah, the collection online of vg sounds is pretty limited...i've tried and just got some random ff stuff. i just love those old sounds, so its really cool that someone is doing it right.
  12. aw man. these are so great. the bells, piano, drum kit (wow), and slap bass are all here. i was hoping for the flute to sound good in a high register ala distant thunder. but if i turn the loop off i can manage some fast passages. if you do more of these let me me know. maybe "the little sprite" could be used for the flute if you can catch a note between the percussion. another hopeful is some twelve string guitar like "into the thick of it." and the music your making is with this is very cool. very progressive along the lines of kikuta. its great to hear the sounds with a fresh approach that takes on the old. i'm going to keep my eye out for you.
  13. just to add. if need a good hosting site, the best and easiest i've found is mediafire. unlimited and i really like the interface.
  14. kontakt is great! - for anyone who can't take nki. - check out a program called cdxtract. it can convert any sampler instrument to another format. exs, soundfont, kontakt, refill...basically anything. you sir are making a dream come true. SOM is my jam.
  15. i'm talking about sounds to PLAY...sorry should have been clear. he took the raw wavs and made sampler instruments right? so he could upload them in say soundfonts for all to share.
  16. any chance you could hook us up with some SOM sounds? cause that would just be awesome.
  17. i was planning on going all out and getting some top quality UAD stuff. still waiting for it to be compatible with logic 8. in the mean time i am pretty happy with most of logic's plugs. and big up for sonalksis - those filters, eq, comps, are awesome edit: spoke too soon, just hit today - http://www.uaudio.com/index.html
  18. guitar stuff here is way cool. the bass line thats playing high sounds can't have those half-tones holding over. it makes the chords changes too dissonant. fix the dissonance and get a beat. you can scour the net for soundfonts, and as for synths check out kvraudio.com. but i don't think the sounds you have up are too bad.
  19. great stuff nutritious. the winds are awesome and blend very nicely with the strings. the dynamics you have going on really make the piece. the snare does sound a little odd and upfront. cut some highs and push some verb to get it back in the mix. and this may just be my personal preference but turn up the brass and the timpani, more so the brass. i think it would push the dynamics over the top. might have to automate some sections. good work, you have a real gem here.
  20. diddo on the chicago pops playing final fantasy distant worlds nobuo was even their himself - i agree that they are more open minded there and that more people get into and socially accept it better, but i recall reading something with nobuo saying that most people that like his music don't even know his name. so to balance things out i think we hold music up higher in our society. anyone else have any insight on this form japan? oh, and i also remember hearing that they teach the theme of love (ff4) to kids in school ...ahh, bad memories of yellow submarine
  21. what immediately came to my mind when i read this is that maybe hollywood will have to raise the bar higher if the quality of these sounds are made more accessible to productions and composers. and actually think symphobia is great, but i certainly wouldn't use it as a crutch to pass off all of my compositions. all of these sample libraries are simply tools that have their positives and negatives that change from person to person. whats important in music is the thought and emotion thats put into it. whatever tools help us there, i'm all for.
  22. i think it's more of a genre-style thing. there are still movies that come out with powerful and memorable themes. pirates is probably a good recent example, even though hans kinda ripped himself off on that one. it really comes down to what the director and producers want. most of the time with hollywood the music is just there for the emotionality, not necessarily as a focus of art. and those studios pumping out full scores every week certainly aren't alleviating the situation. at least japan has it right with anime soundtracks
  23. just to clarify, i was referring to all the top composer's out there. I totally agree with you about adding more names to the collective. i think that we all can't deny that the genre has come a long way in the last decade. Its only going to get better and more respectable as we see more quality music coming out. people will get over it and games WILL have a certain level of respectability as hollywood, we're just not there yet.
  24. Whoa, they actually say that? That's not cool. its weird that games get this rap when movie soundtracks seemingly don't get the same response. i guess the x-factor here is that while hollywood has a bar for quality, video games don't; and many people have probably played some games with terrible music, so maybe they are associating the whole genre with their narrow perspective. most peepz haven't grown the respect for the uematsu' or mitsuda's and they don't realize how high the quality can be.
