  1. First things first, the ambient wind and eagle screech (presumably Storm Eagle's?): I know what it means, so it's cool. If I didn't know what it meant, I wouldn't feel out of place for long. It's a great mood-setter, especially considering that the whole thing centers around a real "fighter pilot" sound. Speaking of fighter pilots, I don't know if this was intentional or not, but the guitar riff at the beginning was modified just enough from the original that the first thing to hit my mind was not Mega Man X, but Top Gun. And, thanks to the afforementioned eagle's scream, it gave the feeling of shattering nature's silence. I love the newly added delay in the melody. It really pulls out a sense of drama that was missing in the original piece. In fact, all of this remix is a means to this end. It has great build up, using different instruments on the melody, starting with some kind of synth-something, then to a guitar, then hitting its climax with two guitars, then backing it down to a slower rendition of the melody at the end. And all the time keeping us flying with the eagle using that ambient sound. If there's one thing that impresses me, it's this kind of artistry. A lot of remixes lean pretty heavily on the original that they are drawn from. But Airbased, without changing a note of the original, is a piece that could have easily stood on its own without a game. I honestly believe that this is the best remix on the site. If you haven't already, download it. You won't be disappointed.
  2. Well... I think the guy did an overall okay job. I have a tiny beef with a few things, but nothing too bad. I'm a big fan of the original JENOVA theme. I know it inside and out. So I might be a little picky about how it is portrayed. For instance, I kept wondering what he was going to do with the brass parts (particularly the ascending trumpet near the end of the loop) that makes this piece what it is. I was expecting him to change the instrument, alter the progressions, something like that. I was not counting on my pet brass part being deleted from the track. FFmusic Dj, don't get me wrong, I completely respect your style (you're actually one of the best here...), but I'm sayin', you should have left the brass part in there. Once I got past the fact that the brass was gone, I started listening more carefully to what was there. Good synth work. Nice beat. Pretty good timing. I actually think that FFmusic Dj techno-ized the piece pretty well. But I still miss the brass...
  3. YES!!! Every time I hear this, I get a mental picture of the classic chocobo, alias: GoGoBoco, and Fat (or is it "Phat") Chocobo, aka: Dj Chubby C, deciding once and for all who's better on the turntables. I'm generally not a huge fan of this kind of music. However, My usual oppinion has proven itself again: "No matter what you do to a chocobo theme, it's still obscenely cool." Calling all remixers: Keep the Chocobo remixes coming!
  4. My favorite song in Chrono Cross, and you do this to it... Actually, it's not that bad. It's just that I'm a huge fan of Radical Dreamers and not a fan of punk. I guess Ailsean's remix sounds okay, but there's other stuff out there that I like better. On the plus side, the guitar sounds good and generally sticks to the melody. The melody was supposed to be a little too gentle for the edgy sound of punk rock, but Ailsean managed to give even that melody an edge rather well. The drums, to my surprise, actually fit the music, which is another thing that, in my oppinion, should not have worked with this melody. I don't like the style of the remix, but at the same time, I can't say a thing negative about the quality. In fact, I almost have to congratulate Ailsean for his brilliant work in successfully turning a soft, beautiful song into something like this. I suppose I'd recommend it to a punk fan, but that's about it.
  5. This is my favorite song from Chrono Cross. Naturally, you can expect me to be extremely picky about how it is interpreted. My chances of liking a remix of a song that was done right the first time are rather slim, so consider this fair warning. Bearing that in mind, I want you to know that I absolutely ADORE this remix. Kaijin managed to impress the nearly unimpressable Rebirth with this one. The strings really add a lot to the remix. And what is that mysterious wind instrument/chime-ish thing that handles the melody? I love it! And what's more important to my liking this remix, you managed to get my favorite part (here, the background acoustic guitar) right. Although I make it a habit to post positive reviews, there are few pieces that genuinely impress me. But Kaijin pulls it off nicely. What'll you do to follow this one up? A remix of Frozen Flame maybe...?
  6. A good remix. It may be an understatement, but that's the only word that came to mind when I heard it. A dynamite interpretation of You Are Not Alone, my favorite FFIX piece. This is one of the few songs in the game that could actually make it as a remix. At first, I was going to brand the extremely echo-y piano as a downside. But, for those of you who normally would do so, finish listening to the piece. The piano just takes some getting used to. With a song that was done right the first time, the best thing you can possibly do for yourself is to stick to the original and this remixer does it perfectly. A few interesting instrument selections, including using the piano instead of the original Japanese string instrument, along with a little reverb, and this piece is as good as, but different from, the original. Overall, definitely one of the best remixes on this site.
  7. Forgive me for being maybe a little too honest, but it is my firm belief that this song+techno does not work. I mean, let's face it, the rigid beat doesn't help Eyes on Me's gentle melody at all. In fact, it's kinda contradictory. I guess my only problem with the piece is that the instrumental is utterly anti-romantic. I certainly wouldn't recommend it.
  8. Iluvit, Iluvit, Iluvit!!! An AMAZING remix of one of my favorite FF pieces. The drums are cool, the guitar is amazing (and good guitar is so rare), it's all good. There's just one problem: TOO SHORT! A remix that has you from the first note like this one should not be this short. If the remixer's reading this: please, I beg you, make an extended version.
