  1. Here here! I play Halo 3 a lot and there are so many people who cheat to get achievements and rankings (which are basically the same thing) that it's ridiculous. Why would you want to waste time when you're not actually playing the game? Oh, and that assumes that the achievement points will always be there. Bungie constantly resets Halo's ranks for "equality." Who knows if Microsoft will do that for the Xbox 720? Then thousands of hours of "hard work" are down the tubes.
  2. DDR is awesome. After I got good at DDR, I joined a swing dance club around the same time. But at first I had to break myself out of the DDR frame because there were no arrows on the ground to guide the steps. It's harder than you would think. With DDR, you start looking at dance as a set of mathematical steps that are preselected, and it's not like real dance at all.
  3. I recently saw similar threads to this one at the VGMdb forums (http://www.vgmdb.net/forums). There were quite a few posts discussing how to procure music online and how not to be cheated. Unfortunately, however, the conclusion was that, for some music, it's just impossible to find legitimate copies. You might want to read or ask over there before you buy.
  4. I agree with the assessment that most of the songs strayed too far from the source material. I kept waiting for some arrangement to hit the original out of the park, but that didn't come. One weakness of OverClocked albums is that many artists contribute to them. In one way, that's great, because lots of tracks are submitted, but it also creates so many different styles that the album lacks cohesiveness. This album contains great music, worthy of listening to many times, but I don't think it's as strong when considered as a story, or when considered as remixes of FF4 songs.
  5. Maybe I wasn't clear - I apologize. When I said "rated," I meant so that people on remixSite can rate the song and discuss it. I or the hosting company doesn't rate or censor songs in any way. As to bandwidth issues, the site is far, far under its bandwidth allotment. I'm not worried about bandwidth. The reason that the details page should be referenced isn't to save bandwidth but rather to build a community. When toplists go live next week, for instance, there won't be much use for them if nobody has rated songs. For now, post as many songs as you can, and yes, you have full control and can permanently delete the files if you choose. So in short, don't worry about the bandwidth or the possible deletion issues. If they become a problem, I'll deal with them when the time comes
  6. I wanted to suggest that remixSite (http://www.remixsite.org/) offers free posting, hosting, and streaming of video game songs. Registration is required to upload music, but anyone can listen without registration. Features include: 100MB upload limit per song All valid music files accepted, including MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, WMA, and others Files in MP3 format can be streamed; all files can be downloaded Upload a new version in place of your old one and track changes Determine exactly how many people listened to your song There is no problem with posting links and debating songs here, as long as the link you post goes to the song's details page so that people can rate it at remixSite as well. For WIPs, mark the "work in progress" checkbox in the upload form. An example of a link to a work in progress is http://www.remixsite.org/song/details/9-v2-Binweasel-Take_a_Step. This particular WIP was revised once, and you can listen to both versions by following the appropriate links.
  7. There is a box office there, but the Grand Rapids show sold out a few hours before the concert. I think you misinterpreted my post. I didn't mean that you were filming; I meant that they are showing video from the Final Fantasy games on a huge screen that's hung from the ceiling. If you can't see the screen, then you're missing a good part of the experience.
  8. I went to a Play! A Video Game Symphony concert at this hall on July 18, 2008, and since I ordered early, I was fortunate to be able to get good seats six rows from the front. One thing I was surprised about was how long that hall actually is. The seats in the back are REALLY far from the stage. Play! does not rely on visuals as much as Distant Worlds does. While Play! has its screens on maybe 20% of the time (and often the video only focuses on Arnie Roth and/or the performers), Distant Worlds plays game video continuously. You need to be able to see the video at times - for example, when they "play into" a battle for Final Fantasy 8. If you sit in the rear orchestra, you'll be far away from the stage, and the performers will look like ants. However, you will be looking up at the screens, so you can lean back and enjoy the visuals like in a movie theater. You might not care that you can't see the orchestra much, because you won't have time to look at it. If you sit up top, you'll have a better view of the orchestra, but you'll be looking down at the screens. You can see an example of this top-down view at . In either case, you do not want to buy tickets that sit you at an angle greater than 45 degrees from the center, where you will miss much of the humor and emotional because you can't see the video. In conclusion, this is a video-oriented concert, much more so than other shows. You should make your decision based on where you can see the screens and whether you prefer to look up or down at them. $8 doesn't seem to me to be worth much consideration whichever way you decide, because you'll probably spend $40 in gas, car wear and tear, and parking anyway.
  9. I've saved every song I downloaded since 1999, about 2000 songs. Many of them are from VGMix, here, and other sites that no longer exist. While I don't have access to the archive from this computer, I'd estimate there are one to two thousand songs. All of them were freely distributed, but I'm not sure what the legality is to redistribute them. I didn't modify them in any way. There are some songs that were later removed from OverClocked ReMix, but I seem to recall that the site's terms allowed redistribution at the time. I also downloaded extensively from VGMix's original version as well as the second version of the site. If someone can weigh in on the legal issues, I'd be happy to zip all the songs into a huge, many GBs, torrent and provide the URL.
  10. If you're looking for piano scores of some of the most frequently mixed tracks, there are a lot available at http://www.squaresound.com/, at least for Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger and other RPGs.
  11. I've never been much of a fan of instructions. Well-designed software shouldn't require the user to read instructions in order to use it. Based on what people here and at other sites have suggested, I'll just add a blue link to songs in addition to the other ways you can access them. Thanks for pointing out the "Score" column - that's actually fixed in Dev but hasn't been released to production just yet. The VgmDB data is two months stale, so you selection difficulty might just be a result of old data. I'll get the data refreshed right away. Editing songs will be a little more challenging, although it can probably be done in only a few hours. That would also help people who just want to post a song, but don't have enough time to write a full description immediately. I'll add all these things as bugs and work on them this weekend. Thanks for the report, and I'll post back here when things get fixed.
  12. I'm interested in hearing what other people have to say about this. What do you think the solution should be? Would it be acceptable just to turn the cursor into a hand when the cursor is over the grid? You may not have noticed that there are buttons at the top of each grid - should those be made bigger?
  13. Hmmm, I'll have to look into that Chrome issue. I tested in Firefox and IE7/8, which account for 80% of the browser market. I don't have Chrome installed, so I'll have to do some testing with that. For now, you can use Firefox or IE, which work fine as long as I know. If you try to visit the site with IE6, you'll notice you get a huge error message saying you have to upgrade. It's just not worth the time fooling around with that buggy mess. Oh, and I had to point out that the usernames aren't the only thing that can be ridiculously long. One of the great things about creating a new site is that you can design for the future, not having to worry about backwards compatibility. For example, songs can be in WAV, MP3, OGG, FLAC, AC3, and WMA, and can be as large as 100MB. You can submit surround music (which I hope someone will do). Images can be up to 20 megapixels. As more and more people come visit the site, I next want to implement compos. As far as I know, there has never been a site that allows people to easily organize compos, judge them, and post results. But for now, the number one priority is to get the site rock solid and stable with as few bugs as possible, because I hate buggy sites. Bug fixed. The grids now work in Google Chrome.
  14. This song has been remixed quite a few times. A live version is available at http://www.ssh.ne.jp/mp3/estb_32.zip, by a Japanese band named S.S.H..
  15. I was thinking of just launching the site and testing as it goes along. After all, there really isn't much reason for people to post remixes if their work will be deleted in the future. I think later today I'll delete the test songs and move the already posted data to www.remixsite.org. I'll just set it up to make backups on a different machine every six hours - that way, if a security vulnerability or a corrupting bug is found, the data can easily be restored to the way it was at most six hours ago. So post some real songs on the site, and you can say that your song is song number 5 or 6. I already reviewed one that was posted this morning.
  16. Well, VGMix is totally unusable. I tried to register for an account there a year ago, and didn't even get a confirmation message. Now, if you look at the front page, they said that uploading of songs is broken. I tried to contact people there to ask them what they thought about this site, but I wasn't even able to find out anyone's E-Mail address. As to posting things, everyone is able to see what you post. I considered adding a permissions system to allow only certain people to see things, but thought it's better to get a site out that works as is and then add that feature in the next version if requested. With hacking, well, that's why this is in testing. I'm hoping someone will read this thread, or one of the ones elsewhere, and volunteer to help discover security vulnerabilities. However, even if there were no testing at all, the framework with which I programmed this site has significant advantages over the way that VGMix initially programmed their site in terms of security.
  17. Hi, Even though I've been following the remixing community for close to fifteen years, believe it or not, this is my first post here. I'd like to call people's attention to remixSite, a new video game music site I've designed with the significant help of several others. I started out trying to learn symfony and JQuery, then attended some video game music concerts, and somehow ended up with an entire website for originals and arrangements of game music. The site allows users to post either final versions of songs or works in progress, which are indicated by a separate flag. Songs can be rated and reviewed, and artists can post updates to songs (for example, a better quality sample or a remade passage). You can associate your songs to original tracks and search to find if others have remixed those tracks. Take a look at http://test.remixsite.org and see for yourself. The site needs further testing and I wouldn't consider it worthy of production use until people have messed around with it a bit more. Feel free to upload some songs and post comments. There is a bug tracking system set up and feature requests are welcome. remixSite is not designed to compete with Overclocked Remix, as it has a different structure and has no judging criteria. In fact, if people are interested in remixSite, I would prefer to work with community members to integrate it with the various music sites, instead of, for example, creating yet another forum. Comments welcome! -Steve
