Don't worry about skill, most pilots around are conducive to ANYONE so long as they try. Not everyone's a beast like they were years past, though there are a few (more so on D3).

While I can't suggest joysticks from experience, most CH sticks seem to work great with Descent. But as a last option, you'd rather keyboard than mouse? I guess that just seems strange to me considering I've always played with the mouse, haha.

Right there with you, booting up the game through DOS 5. I had to re-buy the game through GOG.com so it plays on Vista/Win7, but for $6 it wasn't a bad deal. Anyway, maybe I'll see you in the mines someday.

I've got CSC 216 with Gehringer 9:35-10:50 and CSC 226 with Rodman 3:50-5:05 (both Tues-Thurs). I'll probably take MUS 306 eventually, that seems right up my alley.

Either way is fine by me (cleaned midi vs whatever you've got now): as long as I have all the notes themselves I can make sheets, using your recording (rather than the midi itself) as the source of rhythm/length of the notes. Just let me know (don't feel like you have to rush it or anything!).
