I was pretty appalled by most of what I heard from the CD. The arrangements seem to be pretty awful and the orchestra itself can hardly even play in tune sometimes. Some of the arrangements (glares at Dance of Death) are embarrassingly bad. It's a shame because we know that when Mitsuda is given enough time and a good orchestra, he does wonders (Xenosaga I).

What percussion "instrument" is this?
Ravich replied to Ravich's topic in Music Composition & Production
Yes, but I'm pretty sure anyone with something worthwhile to contribute can understand my intended meaning Note quite. I think the above poster is right that there's more than one sound there. I just dont know the best way of recreating it. -

Hmmm... the thing is that I'm not going for an old time MIDI feel, so I was hoping that wasnt the answer. Is cranking up the volume and adding some decent reverb going to make it feel big enough or will it still feel thin? While I'm here... how do I find a synth that sounds like the one in that track? The melody. -

Maybe a clap with some crazy reverb, but to my ears the attack doesnt sound much like a clap. Maybe that's just because of the psf sound font or whatever. -
FFVII - Shinra Company http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WWFZdsOoSA I am wondering about the one playing on 2 and 4. I have EWQL SD2 but I have no idea where to start looking. I havent had any luck so far.

I get my samples from EWQL mostly, but you'll definitely have to cough up cash for those. The biggest disappointment with them is that they're not very easy to use. I really wish I had a library or 2 that were useful for just sitting down and writing without seemingly endless tweaking. My drum samples are Storm Drum 2. With percussion, I've just sort of realized that I really dont know how to approach creating beats that can be looped for a few measures. Really simple things like in Apokelypse (youtube) the music isnt that good, but it has the right idea, and I really had to stop and think about what the bass and snare/snare roll were doing. It's very simple but I have no idea how to approach creating something to fit a scenario.

Anyone know why she might be having this issue?

I am wondering if anyone has some tips here. I took classical piano lessons from a young age, but I never really learned much about percussion other than a few months of lessons when I was younger. So does anyone have some recommendations as starting points? I have samples at my disposal...

My friend asked me how to best cut and edit some tracks she has of her orchestra performing. Basically the recordings start before the music begins and dont fade out or anything. Is there a free program that does this? I can do it for her, but I'm wondering about free software that would be capable.

EWQL Hollywood Strings Gold Edition

Saw this. Very interested, but like others have said, since I wont be making money with it, I feel like I should wait for a price drop/sale. -
Where do I find choir samples that sound like this?

Havent tried increasing latency, so I'll look into that. My CPU monitor does fine for sure. -

I dont think that's it, though I could be wrong. Play says I am using 1153 MB RAM for this entire project, and I have 6GB on this computer. -

Thanks for the tips. Turns out vibrato varies with the mod wheel, and every time I load a new instrument in PLAY, it resets the modwheel to maxed out, so I have to jiggle it. That helped a lot though. Only problem is that layering multiple patches with surround and stage mic positions is too rough on my system. I think it's because the samples are on a 7200RPM drive instead of a SSD since I'm getting clicks and pops. But yeah, I definitely see how it's possible now. Thanks. -

That would be awesome. I just hear the vibrato of EWQL choir samples so prominently that I assumed it couldnt be done. What kind of effects would be used to make them sound far away? -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNVomngq-Qc This is just an example of what I'm referring to. At the beginning and then in the background you can hear the choirs, I am NOT talking about the live choirs that sing the words. Again, at the very end you hear these ethereal sounding voices. I have EWQL choirs but they're nothing close to that (different purposes, I know). Edit: Perhaps this is a better example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTmnuibyOos At 1:45, those same kinds of choirs come in.

I like what you've done and I think you've got some really great ideas, but I think you could do with a little less looping. Pretty much everything you've got in there repeats at least 2 times in a row, so your motiffs tend to be like 1 or 2 bars long as always end after that But yeah, I really think you've got some great ideas in there. I like how you're taking stuff from so many different FFVII tracks. -
I started drawing this up a few weeks ago and quickly got discouraged. I was going for an epic orchestral arrangement of Red XIII and Seto's themes, but found that the the melodies dont readily lend themselves to this style of music. The harmonies and melodies are very static, so it's hard to create a feeling of growth and forward motion. I thought I would post this since I revisted it and still have some ideas with where I want to go with it. http://www.box.net/shared/ou1tkkjt2e

Maybe if I were remixing and not remastering....
-
Right, I'm not doing this for submission. I just wanted to do something fun while studying music and improving my skills with the libraries I have as well as mixing/mastering. I'm not really sure what you're referring to regarding the MIDI files, as those ones are about as accurate as they get (I've looked all over the place). vgmusic files tend to be fanmade and are generally full of errors and whatnot. Feedback is still welcome.

You're saying that as though they had no idea they were going to release it for the PSX. It worked out that way in the end because they either saw it as a worthwhile sacrifice for the graphics/animations, or because of profoundly poor planning. It doesnt particularly matter to me either way, because it ends up doing the same thing: making the game age badly.
