  1. Thanks Gollgagh, ocre. Definitely can't afford the XL. Still can't decide if I could live with a 2DS. I need to try it hands-on I guess.

Super Mario 3D and Kid Icarus are must-buys for me, I don't play horror games though.

    I must have Fire Emblem.

    I must have Pocket Mans.

    I must have Monster Hunter.

I must have Phoenix Wri- there are TOO many games for me to hold off any more!!

  2. From ye book of Googs:

    Pulldown and the Film-Video Dance

To answer those questions, you have to understand two important things about video. First, you can't add detail beyond what is already in the source footage. Second, the source footage is never greater than 60Hz. When you watch a movie on Blu-ray, it's a 1080p picture at 60 Hz. The disc displays 60 interlaced or 30 progressive frames at 1,920-by-1,080 resolution per second of video. For movies that were recorded on film, the original footage is actually 24 frames per second, upconverted to 30 frames through a process known as 2:3 pulldown. It distributes the source frames so they can be spread across 30 instead of 24 frames per second. Those frames are then interlaced (combined and shuffled) to 60 "frames" per second to match the 60Hz refresh rate of the vast majority of TVs you can buy today. In the case of 1080p60 televisions, the frames are pulled down to 60 full frames per second, and both the players and HDTVs outright skip any interlacing step.

    Going Too Far

Enhanced refresh rates like 120Hz, 240Hz, and various other speed-boosting features on modern HDTVs, on the other hand, push the concept too far. Remember what I said earlier about not being able to add detail beyond what's in the source footage? That's exactly what those higher refresh rates do. They interpolate data between each frame to produce additional frames. But the data in those combined frames can only be based on the source frames and whatever mathematical magic the HDTV is employing to figure out the middle ground. This technique can help reduce judder, or the jerkiness that manifests when displaying footage on a display that doesn't share its native frame rate (like, for example, a 24-frame-per-second film clip pulled down to 30 fps, then interlaced to 60Hz). Some plasma HDTVs can even reach a 600Hz refresh rate, which, when you consider that the source footage is going to be between 24 to 60 frames per second, is downright overkill.

Actually, this effect can produce a distinctly artificial, unnatural feel to video.

Highlighted is what I usually tell people. Not only do you get artificially upscaled video, but it makes movies look unnatural. More isn't always better, it actually gives video the "soap opera" look, whereas lower framerates look smoother and more cinematic. Higher framerates might come into play for video games, but for video, you'll probably want to turn that awkward refresh upscaling off in the options.

  3. And don't forget, before we toss around names like Premiere and After Effects as if they're anything close to affordable solutions (those who warez or piratez, good on you, I suppose), that pro or near-pro results can be had on free or cheap tools with enough work and know-how; if you're crazy enough to learn all about the scripting capabilities of AVISynth, that may be all you ever need.

True, just wanna say that the new Adobe CC suite is only $20 a month for students. The subscription format is pretty affordable and you have access to ALL their programs, no more "Production Premium" package or whatever, it's all there.

    However it's $50 a month for non-students. sux.

  4. How so? I don't see how it could negatively affect the industry at all.

A F2P MMO profits by making items available that will put wealthier players ahead of others. Some MMOs implement a more even playing ground than others, which is nice, but most don't.

The best way to do F2P is to basically make it "subscription-optional." If you spend the price of a normal subscription each month, you should get the expected benefits of your run-of-the-mill subscription MMO.

But having played so many F2P MMOs, I despise the model. It's terrible for any game involving a huge investment of your time. The developers care far less about patching the game and rebalancing because their incentive, their guaranteed revenue, is gone. On the flipside, they have more incentive create a ton of expansions for that guaranteed revenue, usually expansions they put together as quickly as possible so they can move on to the next.

  5. Makes me glad I'm not mayor of the town. This money is mine.

(our mayor still lives in a tent. the villagers gossip about it.)

Side note, the 11:00 PM music was soo nice. Reminded me of Harvest Moon and put me in the best mood. I mean the fish helped, but...

  6. Dude, what is with the fish in this game? My brother, sis, and I are pulling in 40,000+ per haul! It seems like Red Snappers, Knifejaws, even sharks come easy. Is New Leaf just way more lenient than City Folk, Wild World, and the original? Because I've never seen the bells roll in this quickly.

    Pudding is rich.

  7. Set up a scavenger hunt for my brother today. He ignored it

That's how this summer is going. I think I'll take up.. bridge trolling. There's only one bridge in town and I put my house right by it. South Pudding is now closed to tourists.

    (Nice flag, Hylian!)

  8. Yeah I don't really care about 3D Wii U, noone does. And with the low-ish resolution of the Gamepad it probably wouldn't be worth it.

Well I'd really like to talk about Pikmin instead, but I'm a dirty American and must wait a few more days. It will be glorious.

  9. I don't think you can migrate a character you've already started to become mayor of a new town. But you COULD start a new one on your own 3DS, then play with your old character and give your new mayor all the furniture and fruit you've amassed.

I like the way you think. I'll design this character to amass riches and get a nice head start on my future town.

My favorite villager is Diana. She's got a really cool home! All our other villagers seem to be from the original AC, weirdly, but I still haven't seen Cousteau since AC Gamecube! Some day, Cousteau... :[

  10. I don't know if they exactly nailed 3D gaming. My brother and sister turn the 3D off because it irritates them. I enjoy it on, but only if the slider is on the very low end, otherwise I feel dizzy. Plus you have to keep the screen in exactly the right position.

Now as far as game design in relation to 3D gaming.. yea, they nailed that. For whatever reason, the technical aspects have escaped Hollywood and the gaming industry for about 30 years now. By now it must be a running joke for engineers.

  11. Back when I was entrenched in FFXI, I was hoping to be out of college for the sequel. I wanted to be part of the 'pioneering' phase of an MMO. That won't be happening, but at least I have something to look forward to in the near future.

Those screenshots, and all the hype, and the forums I've been lurking are making this really unbearable though. I want in nao. And maybe I won't be a BLM this time? I main BLM in every FF game, for ultimate power.. and the inability to do anything without a party.
