happiest of birthdays timaeus! thanks for all you do in the community! also congrats on the post!

Sweet. That should be enough info to get somewhere. I never thought to use multiple samples. I suppose subtle panning might help too. Thanks guys!

In the event of zombie apocalypse(or just low enrollment) I'll sign up as a star. And then I'd stick with my original pick.

is this the part where we all start talking trash while we wait?

my hats are never this spicy
Seriously though, How do you treat hats to help them fit into a mix better. I know its pretty genre specific, but regardless of looking up commonly used hi hat patterns and listening alot, i still cant seem to make my hats sound good in most mixes. i often end up "cheating" by layering them with loops to get something a little less dry and boring.
for example, in this Sketch i made, the hats just dont really sound very exciting to me, and i feel like they could really spice up the mix.
a good example of hi hat usage to me would be this theyre definitely there, and really seem to bring alot to the mix, but theyre not staring you in the face, or generic sounding.
is it just an issue of sample usage?

And to clear up any worries about not "being good enough" or anything like that, don't worry about that. This isn't about winning and it's not about making the perfect song. At its core this competition is about learning, and practicing. It's unusual to finish a whole mix in a week, and all the polish involved, but this competition can help you start learning your own mental shorthand that could help you out a lot in the long run.
how long is "usual" time for a remix? i usually get like 3/4 through initially arranging a mix and then half assing the mixing and tacking on a placeholder ending by the time a round is up.
also, just saying, i miss the one (or was it two) hour compo, while never having taken part, i feel like it has its value in that youre forced to make all decisions on the fly and just make a quick song sketch. none of that magnum opus mindtrickery that we do with bigger projects.

the only thing that throws me off is the font on some of them. but font is always a bitch when making anything. regardless, these are really nice!
edit: you should join the Deviant group!

god of war on hard mode. Even simple enemies like harpies are a raging pain in the ass

sign me up as a novice! So stoked to see the RWTS back in action!
edit: i didnt read the part about sources. ill pick Duck Tales (NES) - The Moon.
I know it was in darkeswordes megaman compo, but its such a good theme!

Music making was hard for me and still is, I buy the books and hardly read them too, and I've had FL since last Christmas, but I have yet to even finish a track.
Check out the competitions section of the forum! I was gonna refrain from posting in this one since i dont think im "good" yet. However! I had the same problem until i decided to try out the PRC and some of the other competitions. They force you to stop overthinking and just make something. you can learn tutorials and stuff all you want, but if you dont put it into practice, you wont get anywhere. I few competitions in and i already felt like i had come really far.

sandbox games, most likely. Gta would be interesting, or skyrim. Id get tired of hearing everyone in the same voice though.
katamari would be pretty lulzi

I try to think of a genre that I would like to adapt the source material to.
I agree that a genre adaptation usually works well, especially for a newer remixer . You are presented with a semi-specific set of musical "rules" with which to work inside. At that point you just study the genre and listen to a good bit of music from that genre and take notes on how they work and try to emulate what they're doing. Looking at how songs are arranged by listening to them is extremely helpful to me when im stuck

I would say that no, the extra functions on most keyboards wouldnt be particularly useful to a newer musician. I had an oxygen 25 for a while when i started , and i only really used the play/pause buttons. Im also not sure if cubase even has many automap functions for knobs, which would IMO render them useless for just casual use. ultimately though, its a matter of learning your own work flow. if having a box-o-knobs would be useful to you in tweaking common parameters on your softsynth, then you can always upgrade later.
+1 for the keystation 61es. if you did want to go fancier, you could spend 50 or so more and get the oxygen 61 which is a pretty solid keyboard though. Another less thought of option is to pick up a used digital piano at a gear shop. Ive seen a few of them go for 200 something and they almost always have midi out on them.

i like the idea of it. prc is good for practicing the "ocr thinking" style of remixing, where this would be great for practicing the finer points of mixing and polishing a remix that i dont get with the prc since im usually never fully done arranging by the time i sub a mix.

chrono trigger seems like a good fall game. i keep toying with that game on my phone. i should really play it through.
Id say the old 2d Zelda games. Oh and theres Resident evil 4. best fall game ever.
as the season winds down into winter, i love playing diablo style dungeon games. Darkstone, vagrant story, baldurs gate. whichever happens to capture my interest at the time.

Finally happening! It looks like its gonna be more modern electro stuff, but ill take whatever TCM i can get. i guess they just announced it a little while ago. seems like they do more shows than they do actually making new songs. shame.

thanks for all the advice guys! ill get right on it! always feels good to see interest in a remix. one thing thats got me hung up, is arrangement. im not really sure what to do it with the rest of it. any tips on where to start? Ending a remix strong seems to be one of my bigger weaknesses.

Ooh... this sounds perfect for me. I'm just now faffing about enough with music to pretend I can remix instead of being forever listening, but a competition specifically designed to stay conservative so I don't have to stretch my not-yet-existent arrangement muscles too far?
I like it! A perfect place to debut my negative skills and snag second-to-last place.
thats what i thought when i first entered the Remixing with the stars compo last winter, and i snagged second! hobokas right, you never know!

nice mood for this one!

pretty rockin stuff, even for the time time period. imagine what live instruments would do!

I think its Big Beat? Anyways, here you go! its a remix of Crystal Tear Drops from Symphonie of the Night. I had alot of fun with this, so im looking to see what i could do to fix it up. the drums need variation, and i think i should do something with the intro to fill in the space between sounds, it still feels a bit sparse to me. It also doesnt have an ending yet.
