  1. so yeah, I've been plodding along at a snail's pace as far as getting started goes. It's kind of disgraceful, really. Anyway, I was about to start work on my first remix, but then I remembered seeing talk about chord progression in a few places. Admittedly, I still don't know much about how the harmony relates to the melody or how to create a halfway decent chord progression or what have you, although I may have picked up a few pointers when looking through the forum for anything that I thought would help me.

So I guess my questions are these:

    1. Which would be better for me to work on first: the harmony or melody?

    2. How does the chord progression factor into making a remix?

    3. How would I go about making a chord progression, even if it's only a simple one?

Feel free to let me know if any of these questions are going beyond my current skill level, even though I'm really just looking for some basic pointers. Any advice is appreciated.

Edit: It just occurred to me that I may be overthinking things again, but it's all the information that's out there can make one's head spin if they don't know what they're doing.

  2. http://www.image-line.com/documents/lifetimefreeupdates.html

You can get your regkey from your My Account page.

No, this isn't a new thing. It's been there for years. :) That's why it's undeniably the best deal in music software. Cubase, Pro Tools, Reason, etc. all cost money ($200-300 per version) to upgrade. ("best deal" meaning most content for your buck)

Awesome, thanks for telling me about this. Now I have the FL 10 fruity edition on my new laptop and I didn't even have to buy it. I'm probably more excited about this than I should be, but I guess it doesn't really matter.

  3. Why in the world would you buy Mixcraft when you already have a DAW you're used to?

If you really want a cookie-cutter multitrack lane DAW, just get REAPER. It's free. (not to mention Mixcraft is just plain ugly)

(you know FL Studio 10 is FREE for you, right?)

First, good point. I guess I just wasn't thinking enough.

Second, I might look into Reaper. If it doesn't appeal to me, then I'll just get FL.

Third, wait, I can get it free? If I have to have my regkey or whatever that file was, then it probably won't work that way for me. I wasn't smart enough to back up those really important files like I should have done, so if this involves my old laptop in any way, I'm S.O.L. .

  4. Time for me to ask something else, it seems.

I will admit to owning the fruity edition of FL Studio 9 as part of a previous and very feeble attempt to make music (which unfortunately amounted to taking pre-existing MIDI files and giving them a new coat of paint for the most part). I was planning on using it to make music after I actually learned a thing or two about it. However, I recently had to purchase a new computer and start over, so I'm going to have to buy a new DAW before I can do any real work.

While I'll probably take mickomoo's advice and get Mixcraft, I'd like to have something in mind for later on. What's the general consensus on FL Studio and Reason? Is one better than the other? Do each have certain features that the other has not? This isn't entirely urgent, but I'd like to know the answers the last question at the very least.

  5. The whole point of a cover is a verbatim composition with a fresh new soundscape. For instance, Brandon Strader did a metal cover of the Skyrim theme.

It's the Skyrim theme, but with electric guitars and drums.

So the way I understand it is this. If I were to cover an 8-bit song (like the ending theme to Super Mario Land, for example), I could make the soundscape however I wanted to as long as I still recreate the original song note for note.

I'm still a little confused as to whether or not certain backing elements (like pads, for instance) are allowed when they aren't present in the original. I'm guessing no, but I'm not entirely sure.

  6. Cover = your best imitation to reproduce the original piece itself verbatim.

    Okay, just to clarify.

I know that the composition has to be reproduced verbatim, but when making a cover of a song, am I allowed to use sounds that differ from those of the original? Or would that fall into the "remix" category? This is probably a dumb question, but I'm kind of confused here.

  7. So, I guess that means no Hoenn in BW2, but that doesn't rule out a remake still.

I'd be happy as a Clamperl if they somehow included Hoenn and all this "no" business was just a ploy to keep it a secret, but I'm highly skeptical that this is the case. After all, Unova is supposedly very far away from the other four regions and traveling between Kanto and Johto was already a minor pain in the ass.

  8. I want to be a ReMixer, but I know next to nothing about music. A lot of the concepts are foreign to me and my ear is... untrained, I guess you'd call it.

I do plan on taking piano lessons as soon as my finances get sorted out, but are there any resources that I can use to start boning up beforehand? Nothing fancy, just some basic reading material that's easy to understand. I'd really like to start studying some and try to familiarize myself with some of the concepts.

Also, I apologize in advance if this happens to be in the wrong place. I sometimes get confused as to where certain topics are supposed to go.

  9. Psychic/Fighting/Dark starters. Make it happen.

I'm quite content with the current Fire/Water/Grass system they've had in effect since the series started. While I'm not completely opposed to your idea of using other types as the starters, I feel like it could throw too many people for a loop if it were used in an official main series pokemon game.

My main hopes for Gen VI are

    • for the pokemon designs to stay good
    • for the fire type starter to evolve into something other than another fighting type

The first one is the priority in my mind, but I'll be really pleased if they stop making a different version of the Torchic line for the fire type starter. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with the Chimchar and Tepig lines, but the type combination has started to wear out it's welcome after 3 generations of fire type starters.

  10. I don't know anything about these games outside of "sequel" and I'm already interested in buying them. I'll be waiting patiently for more information to surface, but I'm getting at least one if these games get released in the US (something that seems likely considering the American Pokemon.com has posted info regarding the games.)

  11. I understand what's going on here and can only imagine how pissed the musicians who got ripped off by these guys must be, but at the same time I don't understand how it makes any sense for beaglesounds to sell stuff that can legally be acquired for free.

Several aspects of this problem just grate on my nerves, including the sheer lack of intelligence these people apparently possess and the slap in the face they've given to the musicians whose work is being sold on that site.

  12. regardless of whether or not anything will actually come of either SOPA/PIPA or the bill being debated in this thread, it's becoming increasingly obvious (at least in my opinion) that congress doesn't know what the fuck it's doing and is overstepping it's boundaries as a result. I agree with those that think child porn is incredibly bad from a moral perspective, but do we really have to keep jeopardizing the rights and privacy of innocent people just so we can catch "the bad guys"?

This is getting so god damn ridiculous that I'm starting to believe that the Mayans weren't predicting the end of the world at all, but rather the end of America as we all know it. Either that or I'm going a little cuckoo from my frustration with congress. Whichever makes more sense.

  13. if music and video games and television and books could all just learn to embrace similar business models, piracy would see a significant downturn

Your post makes sense to me, especially this part. Not sure how the music industry would embrace a netflix type of business model, but I guess they should if it's possible.

Also, just out of curiosity, isn't Gamefly technically a netflix for video games minus the streaming and whatnot?

  14. I'm a little confused. Wasn't it really the site's users who were engaging in copyright infringement and not Mega Upload itself? Yes, I'm aware that the site's staff may have been in the wrong, but I still don't really see any reason for the FBI investigation or the criminal charges of conspiracy against these people (although I do have to question why they were arrested in New Zealand).
