  1. Well it's not *quite* a sausage, but yeah this is one dense song! I'm not hearing overcompression. It's a very full mix, but I find plenty of separation between elements. The performances are good, vocal and guitar. Definitely some flat notes here and there as Jivey mentioned, but I'd expect no less from a punk song. I find the vocals fitting and well mixed/effected. Drums are punchy without overpowering the mix, drum writing gets a little repetitive at times. I see Larry's points and sure a teeny bit of eq and balance cleanup might be helpful, but I don't see it as an issue to hold this back. Cool, fun track. YES
  2. Larry and Justin have covered the issues nicely, everything they both wrote is what I would also point out. I'll add some thoughts. You've set up a lovely soundscape (and I happen to like the ambient intro!), but the arrangement does seem to plod along quite a bit, relying on lots of whole notes and eighth-note patterns, and with very little dynamic contrast. The lead sequencing does sound very stiff much of the time, don't be afraid to go off the grid sometimes, throw in triplets or whatever. At 2:03, you have a bell lead that is super quiet, super resonant and bleedy, and the sequencing is off-time and also rigid. Just one example of the type of thing that can be improved here. So yes, lovely start, just needs some more development and interest. NO (resubmit)
  3. I heard plenty of source from the get-go. My crits and vote remain unchanged, sorry about that.
  4. I assume this is NOT for the FF9 project, I can't find it listed there, he has another track claimed on FF9 but not this one, someone please mark this as project if I am wrong, thanks. - Chimp Remixer name: Bluelighter Real Name: Guillaume SAUMANDE Mail: ID forum: 30998 From the album project: Final Fantasy 9 Game & Songs: Final Fantasy 9 – The Mind and the Fused Magic Composer: Nobuo UEMATSU Link: Comment: Hi OCR! The original piece was really interesting to work on. I really love the simplicity and the harmonic richness N. UEMATSU managed to put in. In this orchestral mix, I wanted to combine different atmospheres: joyful and peaceful at the beginning, when characters CID and Hilda can live fully their love. darker in a 2nd part, where we can imagine some evil forces they have to fight together. but we have some reassuring notes in the conclusion. A vast sea of white. The skies grey and the only light diffused through the clouds. Stillness and quiet. A stone here. A piece of wood there. The only clues that calmness has not been all this land has ever known. Yet all is white and clean as if Time herself had been the patient, but thorough, attendant to a messy lord. Beneath the surface, the wheels of ill-brought chariots and the remains of horsemen that ever did leap from foe to foe, amassing their entourage into the grave they now occupy. The snowy surface, glowing with the soft, pale light of the heavens, a burial shroud for their arrogance. Swords forged and walls risen to some great purpose now forgotten in the ice. Their pride now the soil of the earth. Time is the only victor. --- Across the Frozen Expanse is actually one of my earliest ReMixes. I started and initially finished the piece back in 2006. For context, my first posted ReMix, At the End of All Things, was added to OCR on February 2, 2006. I began by transcribing the original Another Winter in painstaking detail into sheet music. At that time, the track was only available in the raw chiptune and had not yet been converted to MIDI (an oversight I made sure to correct). With the prep work done, it was time to arrange. I isolated the dominant themes and centered everything around the marimba ostinato. I had the most fun combining the harp riff and marimba ostinato at the end of the piece into one phrase since they never appear together in the original. Over the years, I've come back to it to update the sounds and add new elements that made it stand out just a little more than it had before. I'd say this piece is probably one of my most conservative in terms of arranging, but I really like the atmosphere I was able to achieve with it. I'd characterize the quality of this piece as meditative and contemplative, a tone poem in many ways, and exposed. It's not a "save the world" type piece, but that tends to be true of a lot of my music. This is just a small slice of some part of human experience that is often overlooked. Sometimes we have to come into contact with the bareness of the small things to really understand ourselves and our place in everything. On the technical end, the current version greatly benefitted from a brand new computer that could actually handle all the different samples at once, particuliarly during the climax, and the purchase of Garritan World Instruments. Finally, FINALLY, I got a piece in with Uilleann Pipes! My Celtic heritage has been sorely lacking that addition to my works. This was, of course, arranged in Finale (version 2003 and versions 2006-2013). The samples used were Garritan Personal Orchestra 4 and the aforementioned Garritan World Instruments. --------------------

  8. Your ReMixer name: Argle, Cosmic Sounds Name of game(s) arranged : Sonic and the Black Knight Name of individual song(s) arranged: Theme of Merlina - Name of arrangement: The Icy Journey Through Hope and Sorrow Here's my track from the Christmas album. Remix from a game I've never played, which is rare for me. I prefer to have some emotional connection to a source, but I couldn't decide what to do for this album. I don't even think the source has anything to do with winter or Christmas, but never mind that, it's a Christmas song now. Special thanks to Cosmic Sounds, he pitched this source to me, contributed a few parts, and gave it a name when all was said and done, so I'd like him to have collab credit. Cosmic Sounds comments: Merlina’s Theme is a very graceful and lonesome one. One that portrays a lot of her emotions regarding her premonitions about the future of Camelot. It was one of the main songs in the game that I really liked because of the imagery that it presented. I often think of a winter sunset, or a bare tree with the gentle November wind blowing all of the fallen leaves around the sky. This gracefulness and lonesomeness is what I wanted to portray in the parts that I sent to Argle for the collaboration. Argle did an awesome job at incorporating the parts and emotions into the song .
  9. Initial impression: this track seems well produced but feels long. Even though there are multiple variations in timbre, it feels like the source tune is handled similarly each time and near the end I find I'm really sick of the source tune. Not sure about that speedup section. Will vote later. edit 10/10/14: I'm still sick of that source tune as the same motif plays over and over, but the timbre changes keep it fresh. So MANY timbre changes, I love that. Lots of nice details in this track, all mixed well. I happen to like the dissonant sections, they sound purposeful and I think that adds moodiness. I do agree it almost sounds too empty texture-wise sometimes, which seems an odd comment to make given the glitchy/sequency nature of some of these timbres. I don't care for the speedup at all. Regardless, so many unique ideas, nicely done. YES

There is so much good music in FF6. This was one of my favorites. I wanted to do a fast paced electronic remix of this song to mirror the chaos that is Kefka. Infected Mushroom was the inspiration for the style, and Nobuo Uematsu was the inspiration for doing the song. I used Ableton to mix the track. All synths were made with NI Massive, Ni Kontakt for the string instruments, and mastered with Izotope Ozone. Thank you for your time and consideration. Best, Thomas
  11. Initial impression: very cool sounds but the bass lead seems too loud especially when it is exposed with only drums. Also soundscape gets a bit samey. Will vote soon. edit 10/9/14: Thanks Justin for that breakdown. I agree with it mostly, but I'm a bit concerned about that final "heavily modified B section," it's groovy but tends toward liberal imo. I'm gonna give it the benefit of the doubt, the organ stabs and general vibe are carrying it for me, source-use-wise. I still feel like the soundscape comes off as samey, but there's really nice personalization in the writing throughout. I think the reason that bass sounds so loud to me is that it is buzzy, as Justin mentioned, and it is completely centered (as bass usually is). I wonder if just the upper end (the buzzy part) were stereo separated just a little, it would sit more nicely in the mix. My mind just doesn't want to accept lovely buzz/crunch right in the middle. Groovy track. YES
  12. Name: Arceace Real name: Ben Clifton Game: Spyro: Year of the Dragon Arrangement name: “Acoustic Fields” Original track: Midday Gardens Link: Comments: I find it rather surprising that there isn't a single Spyro the Dragon remix on OCRemix. The original Spyro Trilogy holds many fond memories for me growing up. The music was always my favorite part of the games, and I sometimes enjoy playing those old soundtracks when I'm busy with my school assignments. Midday Gardens was a rather odd song out of Spyro 3, but that doesn't make it any less awesome! The seemingly random assortment of instruments seem to work together perfectly to create a cool, chilled out atmosphere. In this remix, I just wanted to enhance some of the cool drum patterns, and give it a more melodic spin. Enjoy!
  13. Initial thoughts on this... very cool sounds and mixing, it sounded like a DP at first, yet the writing and instrumentation ends up sounding repetitive. Will vote on this soon. edit 10/10/14: The production on this track is quite good, I especially love the stop/starts in the beat, great way to add anticipation and excitement. But yeah, same motif over and over and you've lost my attention. Add some variation in melody writing and/or instrumentation, a new lead instrument, more sfx, throw in some other kind of twist like a proper breakdown or even a simple keychange would add interest. I'd love a better ending too. I do hope to hear this one again! NO (resubmit please)

  15. I will do my vote on this soon, but a little background, I listened to this track in the inbox in July and I direct-rejected it because it had massive resonance and balance issues, also it was short (about a minute and a half). Jeremy reached out to me to get more info on how to improve it, and he has improved it quite a bit. I still think there are some production issues but it's definitely ready for judge processing. Ok, voting time. So, I had suggested some eq fixes to Jeremy, and suggested he lower the reverb and delay significantly as the track was getting washed out. He managed to get rid of the resonance from the low end that was actually obscuring the track at the louder parts. Now however, I feel like the low end isn't eq'd quite right. I had mentioned the possibility of eqing the left hand separately from the right, to get a little more clarity and definition in the bass, and I still think this is a good idea. I still feel there is too much reverb and more importantly too much delay. I suggest backing off on the delay, and also low cut the delay/reverb to around 800-ish Hz to keep low-end mud in check. Jeremy you confided in me that you played this track live and then quantized it in your daw. I caution against overquantizing your beautiful piano arrangements, as they can quickly sound mechanical and un-human. Leave some of your natural errors in so we can tell it is you who is playing it! I really love this arrangement and the moody solo-piano interpretation of this upbeat source. Nearly there... sorry to toss it back to you again... but these critiques should help you in all your future tracks, they will be excellent I have no doubt. NO (resubmit, please)
  16. remixer: Hazama real name: Jeremy Flessing game: Tetrinet name of arrangement: 'The Tetrinet Is Down' When you've played thousands of hours of a game with a single song that loops after just a single minute, that theme is bound to resurface eventually. For me, I've found that for the last 17 years, one of those songs has been "The Dance of the Spheres", used as the Theme to 1997's TetriNET. Without even thinking about it, when I'm sitting at a piano or a keyboard, bits and pieces of it come out every now and again, and I finally decided to just make it official. Back in the early 2000's, I attempted to remix this a few different times in a few different styles, but much like the song itself, my versions all came out repetitive and short. Truthfully, the song came about by accident. I was trying to write an original piano epic, but my left hand found the chord progression for the song, and my right hand cordially obliged, slowly and in a minor tone, and 45 minutes later, the song was "finished"... or so I thought. Enter a year's worth of waiting in the queue. During this time, I hadn't touched what I originally wrote at all, though I did religiously watch the Judge's Panel for updates. My song never ended up getting to the submission phase, thanks to the glorious intervention of Chimpazilla, who challenged me to not only fix some of the mastering issues that plagued my original submission (and let's face it, ALL of my previous OCReMixes) but to also extend it and add original bits. I took her advice to heart, and over the next few hours turned to days turned to weeks turned to months, I slowly refined the song, while a series of personal family tragedies were playing out in my life... and added what is arguably the heart of the song itself. I'm incredibly grateful for her guidance, without it, the parts between 1:46 and 2:39 never would have existed. My last submission to OCReMix was over a decade ago. Although I've lacked direct communication with the community and the people, I've silently cheered from a distance every victory the site and the composers/remixers have had. I can only hope that this submission is a new beginning of remixes from me. I've missed you all. -- Hazama
  17. Remixer Name: Garpocalypse Email: Forum ID: 31287 Name of Game: Legend of Legaia Remix Name: As The Town Sleeps Source: Light of the Town Hey OCR, This is my remix of Legend of Legaia's Light of the Town. For this one I tried to imitate the early works of one of my favorite, still living, composers. Ed Van Fleet. I first did this remix for the People's Remixing Competition a year ago and thought it would have a pretty good chance at passing the panel with a little more work. The arpeggios present in the source play throughout this remix and I did a few variations on the melody in order to expand it into a full remix and still retain familiarity. There is some original material in this remix but I believe it is still above the minimum amount of source material required. Thanks! Hope to see a bunch of you at MAGfest again! -----------------------------------------------------------------
  18. This track feels a little long to me, but I like the arrangement a lot. There is some really cool unique writing, instrumentation and sounds in this mix, and the soundscape is lush. Source use seems fine, I hear plenty of it with lots of fun interpretation. I'm hearing quite a bit of mud though, in the lows and low mids primarily. The bass is taking up too much headroom in the lowest range, and ends up sounding too quiet and indistinct as a result. Some of the instruments have a lot of reverb and their tails are overlapping badly quite often. Also, I'm hearing some unwanted resonances from one or more timbres throughout the mix. I'm going to listen again and decide how much this all bothers me. No, I'm not going to do that. These issues bother me. The track needs one more pass at the mixing, eqing the low and low mids and controlling the reverb tails, and taming some of the harsh resonances. NO (resubmit please)
  19. Yeah, had to wait out the two week rule or whatever in order to submit this baby as well. ReMixer name: G-Mixer Real name: Garrett Williamson Email: Website: http://garrettwilliamsonmusic.com UserID: 39845 Name of game arranged: Sonic CD Name of arrangement: “Timekeeper" Name of song arranged: “Quartz Quadrant” Comments: This is the track I did for the Temporal Duality remix project. Somehow it didn’t make it into the mix flood cuz like yeah whatever fine. Let’s be honest, we all wanted to be on the mix flood, but that didn’t happen. Haha I came in on the project pretty early when Rexy had begun generating interest in it, somewhere back in 2012. Almost immediately when it was decided that SuperiorX would direct the project, I came in begging to do Quartz Quadrant from the Japanese album. That track is one of my favorite tracks from any Sonic game. Unfortunately, another remixer had beat me to it, so I originally was doing a bonus remix of it. At some point, though, the original mix was dropped and I took the place of that track. This whole entire mix was basically done just by messing around in Logic Pro. I started off just programming chip tune sounds and eventually, after several months, it was finished. This could possibly be the most fun I’ve ever had remixing anything, video game music or not. I was so utterly happy with how this one turned out. My goal of a remix is always to make myself want to hear what I remixed more than the original version. And I think I most definitely achieved that goal with this song. Enjoy. --Garrett Williamson-- -------------------------------------

I had a blast making all of my arrangements, but this last one was certainly the one I was most happy with. I had a lot of themes to incorporate, and collaboration was encouraged, so I reached out to my teammates to get some material from them. Sadly Gario couldn't contribute any of his fantastic chip leads due to some time constraints, but I tried my best to makes some leads in his place! Jewel Man was his robot master and it was fun to work in. SuperiorX was able to contribute the pads and piano bits throughout, and what he did worked wonders for the overal sound of the mix. His robot master Plug Man was another great theme to add in. I'm very happy that my team members picked what they did, in the end I feel I was able to work all of our themes together in a coherent way, with some of their melodies weaving together at times. I tried a lot of new things with mixing, lead layering and the like in this mix, and I'm very happy with the results. I've always had a thing for chill, down-tempo mixes, but doing something upbeat and high energy like this was really fun and hopefully I can keep experimenting with new styles! It's been a while since I worked on this track and I needed to reorient myself with the sources myself For reference, the only part of the Mega Man 6 credits theme is from 3:04 - 4:42 in this video, since that's the part that Darkesword wanted us to use. 0:00 - The 3 note motif repeated in the piano throughout the intro uses the 3 note pattern of the Pharaoh Man bassline. 0:07 - Plug Man's main melody comes in harmonizing with the Pharaoh Man motif. 0:29 - 0:48 - Somewhat of a repeat, slowly building and adding little flourishes in the melody and such. 0:49 - 1:01 - First melody of the Megaman 6 credits theme. 1:02 - 1:16 - Melody is repeated, with a backing synth that is playing the bassline of Pharaoh Man in a higher register 1:17 - Pharaoh Man melody is used here, with a sort of liberal rhythmic alteration. 1:31 - Pharaoh Man melody continues, but with small parts of the Plug Man melody spliced in where there were rests before. I do this splicing of melodies together a few times in this song, and its a little hard to explain now that I'm trying to do so But I'm hoping you can hear what I mean. 1:45 - 2:00: The B-section Jewel Man melody comes in as the end of this sort of chorus section. 2:00 - 2:17: A reprise of the intro bit, shorter and with more melodic flourishes courtesy of Superior X. 2:18 - 2:46: The 2nd "verse", again using the first melody of the Mega Man 6 credits theme, with some slight variation on the ends of phrases. 2:47 - 3:01: The 2nd "chorus", but this time the roll of Pharaoh Man and Plug Man are reversed. First three notes of Plug Man happen, then Pharaoh Man interrupts with a quick motif. Then after then next few notes of Plug Man, it transitions into a part of the A section melody of Jewel Mans theme. This repeats twice. 3:01 - 3:15: The chorus ends the same way as the first time, using the B section of Jewel Man again. 3:16 - 3:45: This is the first time I use the B section of the MM6 Credits theme (Heard at 3:28 in the video I linked earlier in this message). I felt this acted as a good bridge section for the whole piece. 3:46 - 4:00 - This is a sort of climax part, I tried to do a cool guitar solo but its pretty minimal, and uses a part of the main Pharaoh Man melody that is echoed by some synths. There's also some liberal bass noodling for some reason. 4:00 - End - Another reprise of the opening, as it slowly fades away. I've never really done a full breakdown before so sorry if this is at all confusing! Let me know if further clarification is needed. Needless to say, after writing this all out I realize just how all over the place my source usage was. But I wanted to try mixing melodies together instead of just having one after another to make it more intricate. All the themes are used a fair bit throughout, they just have A LOT of interplay between them. A bit of a different writing style for me, but I like how it turned out! Hopefully it's all good for y'all. Thanks Comments from SuperiorX: This was the final mix for our team "The Beat Masters" in the WCRG 2013. Jordan asked me to contribute some pads and piano parts, and I was happy to oblige. Unfortunately due to time constraints I wasn't able to do as much I wanted, but luckily Jordan provided a solid starting point that I just expanded on a little bit. I ended up contributing the piano bits and the LFO and airy pads that you hear in the intro, the bridge (2:00 section), and the outro. I also layered a subtle synth instrument on top of the piano melody at 2:00 for a little extra pizazz. I'm really happy with how this track turned out and hope to collaborate with Jordan some more in the future! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- MM4 Pharoh Man: MM6 end credits: MM9 Plug Man: MM9 Jewel Man:

  24. While I'm still considering my overall vote on this track, I feel I need to point out the source usage from 2:15-4:14. 2:15-2:58 seems original, but at 2:58, he has used the motif starting at 0:46 in the source. He references this motif with the guitar repeatedly until 3:24, then with the flute until end. I'm still considering the production and may flip my vote, but I want to make sure he gets full source credit. edit 9/27/14: I've changed my vote to NO and explained my crits.
