  1. what's the point of playing soccer? what's the point of going for a bike ride? what's the point of sledding down a snowy hill? I don't see the point of asking such a question. You can ask this same question about anything really.

Err, yeah, but as you can see from the mutiple explanations here, it can be answered. Someone who doesn't understand why 10 people would want to run around in a field and kick a ball around might ask "What's the point of playing soccer?" To which soccer players might reply. "I love the structure of the game. I love the exercise. The teamwork." etc.

As someone who doesn't understand why you'd want to watch anyone play a video game, I asked the question. I'm satisfied with the many reasons, and concede that, of course, one's hobbies are beyond judgment of others. I still don't think I'll ever watch a LP, but now I kind of get why other people might.

  2. I wanna know what my numbers are. Last time I checked, I was at something like 8-9% BF. My wife feeds me good food (grass fed beef, mostly paleo) so it helps that I don't have to worry about my diet.

Recently had to change my workout routine, which blows. I hate working out in the mornings (I would always go after work and relieve some of the stress of the day) but someone over here had a freak-out about work hours, and now I'm locked in with no flexibility. I'm at the gym at 6 every day now :( But at least I still get to work out.

  3. Hey guys,

I'm going to have the opportunity to write music to go along with some fan-based youtube productions soon, and I'm wondering who out there has experience scoring or knows some good resources that I could consult. I'm a little bit at a loss of how to time everything so it makes sense, etc. and I'm looking for a place to get started. I have Cubase, so I know I can import the video there and compose along with it.

  4. Man, talk about the failure of the community here. Sorry it's taken so long for anyone to talk to you about this piece. I'm listening now, though admittedly it's not in the best environment.

First, kudos for doing a FFMQ arrangement. This album has so many great tracks. I've wanted to dig my teeth into it for a while.

The core of it is really nice and chill. I like it. I think a live flute and violin would take this to new places, but the flute isn't as jarring as the violin. The violin took me out of the mood because the sample sound is so harsh. I could offer to do the flute for you if you like, but I can't make any guarantees as to the quality of my playing.

You're right in that it lacked a bit of movement before the violin came in, so yes, I agree that there's somtehing you need to do to the last bit of the piece to keep it feelign like it's moving forward, but I can't think of any suggestions off the top of my head. Maybe add some padding? I actually think of water while I'm listening to this...maybe some water sound effects? I'm just shooting from the hip. The track does feel a liiiiittle empty, as chill pieces tend to do.

  5. No, it's not a capella :P

I'm having trouble sticking to the source and making it clear that we're working with cid's theme, because my imagination is running a little wild on this one. I expct to have a first draft by Sunday night, although I'm working all day Saturday so I can't be 100% confident.

  6. I think it would help if you say what kinds of sounds you want.

I'm still a budding remixer (only been doing this since January 2012 and I mostly use my live instruments) so I'm definitely looking for:

a.) a good orchestral kit, more strings than winds since I have winds at my disposal

    b.) some good epic drums

Other than that, I have questions as to what I SHOULD be looking for, you know? I'm still sort of defining my style.

  7. Thanks Argle! I'll do some browsing along those lines. I have Morphine and Harmon synths...do think Omnisphere is worth getting even though I have a bunch of other ones?

This year's Black Friday showed me some really good deals that I couldn't afford at the time, so I may wait it out until November to really upgrade the studio and put my tax refund money in a CD or something. I have some native instruments vouchers, too, so maybe that'll help.

If anyone has any other suggestions for Kontakt libraries or building up my sound library in general, you would be my hero.

  8. I already have Komplete 8, if that's what you're talkign about, which comes with Kontakt 5. Or are you saying just go crazy looking for awesome Kontakt samples?

If anyone could recommend some good ones or general repositories for Kontakt samples that would help me out, too. I'm pretty sure Orchestral Tools and 8dio works with Kontakt, but that will kill my $1,000 with one or two sample packs :P

  9. I was looking at the composer's pack from EWQL. It seems like a ridiculous deal; you get like $4,000 worth of software and sound packs for $1,000 ish. I'm wondering if anyone here has shelled out the cash for something like that and what they thought of it.

That aside, I was considering taking $1,000 of my tax return this year and dedicating it to music stuff. Granted that I already have a tube preamp, a legit DAW (Cubase 7), Komplete 8, and a good soundcard (Focusrite Safire Pro 14), are there any suggestions? I could either go the software or the hardware route, though I don't know what kind of hardware I'd get other than maybe some nice mics.

  10. the appeal of watching someone play a video game, to an actual gamer, should be obvious. have you never sat in a room with a friend and watched them play zelda?

    ...it's fun.

Ick, no! I want them to give me the controller and let ME play Zelda, or put a game on that we can both play. If I went to hang out with a friend and they picked up a single-player game, I'd leave! Unless maybe they were like "dude I can't get this part, help me out". But that's me.

  11. (Moved from another thread to avoid hijacking)

I'm actually just curious, since I've been seeing the links to LPs a lot while looking for source tunes on YouTube...what the hell is the point? Not to criticise what anyone does with their time, but I'm confused as to where the enjoyment is in watching someone else play a video game. I've never watched one of them - is there goofy commentary, or something, or anything that deepens your experience, or is there a strange enjoyment in watching Cecil tackle another imp through someone else's control? I just don't get it.
