  1. why would you be disappointed with what order (and what time frequency) games are released

that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard

I disagree; I believe it's perfectly rational and logical. Grouping all of these big releases into a remarkably small release window means that Nintendo's going to be putting out its major series games almost at one shot. It typically takes anywhere from 3-5 years for new Mario, Metroid, and Zelda games to release (main series releases as opposed to Mario Kart-type offshoots or portable titles). What's disappointing is simply that based on Nintendo's recent history, we could have some real garbage coming out next year. Or have you forgotten that the holiday titles of 2008 were Wii Music and Animal Crossing?

I'm glad to be getting games of this level of quality, but I recognize that the all-at-once approach means that Nintendo either has to reveal something big at E3 for next year, or we're going to be seeing a 2008 holiday season repeat (and yes, I know Smash Bros and Mario Kart were 2008 releases, but I think that's where everything sort of stopped for Nintendo that year).

  2. I'm both thrilled and a little disappointed. Obviously playing a brand new Mario and Metroid title within a month of each other is a godsend, but with those two in May and June and then probably Zelda in November, they're using their "big three" up really freaking quickly. Nothing wrong with that, but they're setting up an epic fail for 2011. Maybe that's when we'll see some new IPs or new versions of classics (*cough*kidicarusandmother4*cough*).

  3. Thanks for the recommendations, everyone!

I had another question that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I know that FFVII is available on the Playstation Network. I don't have WiFi right now, though it wouldn't be hard to simply drive to school and use theirs if I must. Can someone explain how I can download FFVII from the PSN? (If it's relevant, I have a 4gb memory card, so space shouldn't be a concern.)

  4. I wasn't originally planning on getting Patapon, but the surprising amount of praise it's getting has added that to my list. I will also be picking up Metal Gear Portable Ops at some point (SRPGs are good, but I've got a lot of them for the DS already).

I had forgotten about Dungeon Seige; I borrowed a friend's PC version of that years ago and remember enjoying it, so that's one I'll look into some more.

  5. Halfminuteherohalfminuteherohalfminuteherohalfminuteherohalfminuteherohalfminuteherohalfminuteherohalfminuteherohalfminuteherohalfminuteherohalfminuteherohalfminuteherohalfminuteherohalfminuteherohalfminutehero

.... so are you and The Biznut saying that Half Minute Hero is a wise investment...?

And thanks for the suggestions, Gollgagh. Have any of you played the Legend of Heroes games, and if so, are they any good?

EDIT: One other thing. I love the Tales series, and I know that at least one game was released in Europe (which means importable and playable in English). Which one was it (I seem to recall that it may have been Eternia), and can anyone recommend a good website to order it through?

  6. Hi everyone,

I just picked up a PSP 3000 from Best Buy (along with Dissidia, Mega Man X, Castlevania, and Crisis Core: FFVII). I had two basic questions:

    1) Can I import Japanese games or European games and play them on it without hacking the system (I'm specifically looking at the various Tales series games that apparently aren't available in North America)?

    2) Any recommendations for some good games to pick up? I typically play RPGs, but I also enjoy action/adventure titles. I have Lunar reserved, and am probably going to get Half-Minute Hero when I can find a used copy. Anything else particualrly worthwhile?

  7. I'm assuming, of course, that you know that something like this would never qualify as a ReMix for this site's standards. I only mention that because I'm not going to give any constructive feedback for improving it to get it posted.

That out of the way, this is really cool. The Genesis has a unique sound that's pretty much its own, and I would love to hear more Mega Man NES tracks remade using a Genesis soundfont.

  8. The reviews were right about one thing, though. It seems that if you allocate your points well enough, your party gets ridiculously overpowered after only a few hours. It's fine with me because I have no problem with plowing through a game like this in a (comparatively) short amount of time, but killing bosses in just a couple of turns is really something I'm not used to.

  9. I'm worried about accessibility for my non-fighting game fan friends.

Actually, this game is the best option out there at this point for accessibility (besides Brawl, of course). You can learn some combos and string together awesome attacks, but in the end, if no one in the room is experienced, button mashing can have some devastating results (just don't try to button mash online; bad idea). Non-fighting game fans can probably get into this easier than they could Street Fighter 4.

  10. I agree with this 120%, mainly because of the control scheme. How are you guys playing this? Wiimote? GC controller? Classic controller? Or did you shell out for the fight stick?

All of those options sound equally awful.

The GC controller works perfectly. I know a lot of people say that it isn't ideal for fighters, but in this case, there's no flaws with using a Wavebird. The Wiimote doesn't work well at all, and the classic controller is a bit awkward for this game. I'm sure the fight stick works well, too. I just didn't want to spend $80 on it when I was already spending $100 (got No More Heroes 2 with this one last week).

As for the people who are saying, "I wish this wasn't on the Wii," I've got to say, Thank God it's on the Wii! I've been a Wii-only owner since 2006 (not counting older consoles, of course), and I'm thrilled that the Wii is getting games like this. There are lots of great games allegedly slated for Wii releases throughout this year and next, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. The way I see it, games like this are needed to start bringing core gamers back to the Wii who may have been early adopters, but sold their systems due to a lack of games. Tatsunoko v. Capcom is a solid, pure arcade experience. When I first sat down and played it, it reminded me of why I like video games in the first place: they're fun. The 360 and PS3 get enough good games; the Wii deserves some quality, too. [Don't misconstrue this sentiment; a game like this should be able to be played by everyone regardless of console ownership; I'm just glad that something like this finally came out on the Wii].

  11. A friend recommended it to me, so I picked it up along with Glory of Heracles. Sands of Destruction is, in my opinion, the better game. It's kind of generic, but if you're into anime-style JRPGs, it's really good. As an aside, the anime is pretty enjoyable as well. The first two episodes are up to watch in dubbed format on Funimation's website.

EDIT: I almost forgot; Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger/Cross, Xenogears, etc.) did the music, and it's really good.

  12. EDIT: I just checked online for The Crystal Bearers, to see what having relatively frequent TV spots does for a weird game. Nothing much it seems, because Crystal Bearers has only sold around 150,000 copies worldwide.

Hey, maybe it IS the consumers.

Or the reviews. Many consumers equate 6-7/10 with an epic *F* even if the game isn't bad. Of course, reviews can't always be the problem. No More Heroes 2 isn't going to sell very well in all likelihood, and it's getting great reviews. MadWorld and No More Heroes 1 suffered the same fate. Those three games could have suffered from M-rating syndrome, where they're so over the top and lack the mainstream name appeal of things like GTA that no one bought them.

For Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, I think it'll sell reasonably well, but there's still a pretty good chance it'll become this generation's Marvel vs. Capcom 2 with respect to prices and rarity down the road.

On another note, thanks for the info regarding the fight stick, DarkeSword!

  13. Don't know if anyone on this board picked one up yet, but I had a couple of questions about it. First, while I assume it works extremely well with Tatsunoko, does it work well with any other Wii games (Brawl, primarily). Secondly, and relatedly, does it work with Street Fighter II on the Virtual Console? I really want one, but that price tag is kind of high. If I can justify getting it by using it on other games, it might be a "buy" for me.

  14. Easily one of my favorite soundtracks is Chrono Cross. I own the game, and played a few hours of it (never had the time to really devote to it). Well before owning it, I owned the soundtrack. I had downloaded some mp3s, and really liked what I heard, so I bought the 3-disc set. Best investment in a CD ever. When I did eventually play the game, the funny thing for me was that the game really didn't live up to the music. Yasunori Mitsuda is a musical god.

  15. This is yet another masterpiece! It took a long time, but the wait was so worth it!

Of course, with this track released, the level of epicness that is expected of the finale is through the roof. I can't wait to see what you guys do with it. For now, this is uniquely the best version of this song that I have EVER heard. Fantastic work!

  16. I can't get a screenshot at the moment, but some playing with it showed that I'm roughly 10% further back from the page. What I mean by this is that 110% puts me about where I should be. The problem is that it cuts off the sides of webpages, and while this isn't a huge issue generally, it does affect my use of WestLaw (a paid legal document website) when it cuts off the sides of cases.

  17. Okay, so here's the story. Yesterday, I managed to get a particularly nasty virus on my laptop. My efforts to remove it were futile, though thankfully all of my important documents (and media files) are on external drives. To that end, I ended up formatting the hard drive.

I'm now in the process of reinstalling everything, but I've hit a little snag. It seems that my Internet Explorer window displays smaller than it did yesterday. This is true of all webpages. The settings seem to be the same (same zoom level, text size, screen resolution, etc.). Lots of webpages just display much smaller, like towers in the middle of the screen. The monitor is widescreen, so this is expected to some extent, but not like this.

The Dell tech support person insisted that changing the fonts would help, but that wasn't the case. Does anyone know how to make webpages display larger outside of increasing the zoom level?

  18. Only my Pokemon Gold and Silver died on me. I know about the clock issue in those games, but it's really a shame. I guess I'll have to invest in one of the DS remakes :(

To echo what a lot of others here have indicated, I think all of my NES games with batteries still save. Same for SNES and GB, except as noted above.

  19. In no particular order:

Legend of Zelda Wii (just confirmed for 2010, though knowing Nintendo, that means 2011...)

    Super Mario Galaxy 2

    Metroid: Other M

    Arc Rise Fantasia

    Mega Man 10

    Golden Sun DS

    Tatsunoku vs. Capcom

Dragon Ball Z RPG 2 (Attack of the Saiyans sequel, DS)

    Tales of Graces

    Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth

If I had or were to get a PS3, I'd also be excited for Final Fantasy XIII, Super Street Fighter 4, and the new Batman game.
