  1. Holy orchestra, Batman! Man, this is awesome...it's like...Uematsu meets Sakimoto. I have to admit I also did a double-take and had to check if this wasn't from some Orchestral Game Concert CD or something. I dunno what everyone's talking about with the "MIDI-rip" nonsense and stuff. This is an arrangement in every sense of the word. I can't wait for Part II...

Keep an eye on this dude, folks...don't be surprised if you see his name listed in movie credits someday. O_O

  2. Just a tip... you feel like this was classic music because the original song was already a remix from some classical music. But can't recall if the author was Beethoven or Mozart. I think it was Beethoven. So this song is the remix of the remix.

(If the MRPG song can actually be called a remix, that is. )

Are you positive? I'd be very interested hearing the original composition...I'm sure Beethoven's version is many times better than ours. O_o

Anyway, anyone who wants a copy of the original sheets that Blak sent to me, you can get 'em here:

    Waltz of Pain sheets

Or if you want the high quality version...

    Higher quality sheets (2 MB)

And here's what they sound like (included in the high quality sheets):

    MIDI file

DISCLAIMER: I made a LOT of changes to the original arrangement, so don't expect it to sound exactly like my version. You're free to try out your own improvisations and stuff...but just be aware that results may vary. I'd be interested in hearing what people come up with, though. :)

  3. Yeah...it's not Square or Nintendo, so apparently it SUCKS. Ha, that's what you get for remixing obscure games. :P But yeah, seriously...it's too bad, people these days just don't realize the importance of REAL ULTIMATE POWER.

I like the bassline you got goin' here...awesome synths, too. Percussion's groovin'. I also love those stereotypical "Asian chords" that come into the background later. Makes me remember mah roots. ;)

But yeah...awesome stuff, Gecko. You oughtta be proud of yourself. Yeah, go ahead, you know you want to...give yourself a pat on the back. C'mon, you can do it...yeah...oh...OHHH, there it is. Ohhh, yeah...doesn't that feel good?

Okay, so...um, yeah. I'll go away now.

  4. Hey, thanks for playing Blak and me's stuffs, Larry. :D Sucks that the show cut out early, though...maybe you can do an all nighter.

And I'm serious, Larry. You gotta sing a VG theme every week. The listeners'll love it, trust me. Doesn't even have to have lyrics...just your standard generic "doo doo" or "dum dum" stuff. Try it out, man. It's gonna be all the rage, I just know it...

  5. Yeah, the ID3 tag says:

(FF7) - Those Chosen By The Planet

    (FF8) - Liberi Fatali

    (FF9) - Kuja's Theme

    (FF6) - Terra's Theme

Personally, it didn't do much for me. It was pretty interesting for the first few minutes, but I think it sort of lacked the kind of "punch" I expect from this genre. Maybe it was the samples...I wasn't too impressed by them. The ending was also abrupt...there should be something after the Terra segment to let people know you're about to end the mix. Perhaps a recap to the beginning.

There's also "click"-ing here and there. Slightly annoying.

Overall, though, the arrangement and flow is pretty durn good. Recommended for any FF fan.

(Oh yeah, and the BTW, it's spelled "MEDLEY," kthxbye.)

  6. The combination of bass, acoustic guitar, violin, and pads worked so beautifully in the original song, and the solo piano doesn't nearly capture the feeling for this particular song. Maybe this is me just venting on the asinine idea some people have that any song played solo on a piano sounds better, when it's actually highly dependent on the individual song and the style it's recreated in.

Why exactly does a remix need to "capture the feeling" of the original song? Isn't the point of arrangement to give something your own interpretation, your own spin, your own FEEL? In fact, "Dream Shore" is actually already an arrangement of another theme, originally from Radical Dreamers, which had a very different feel itself. Listen to Jaroban's "Interdit" remix to hear just how different two interpretations of the same song can be, and yet at the same time BOTH be excellent pieces of music. As long as MC captured his OWN feelings in this arrangement, it's fine as it is.

  7. I think Digital Coma hit the proverbial nail squarely on the head. If he can work such magic with a machine, I can only imagine what wonders he could conjure once he starts using a real instrument. You can even hear the action of the keys in some places (like 3:06). Just when you thought he couldn't possibly get any more detailed...

The only thing I didn't like about this arrangement was the ending. Dude, that is NOT an ending...it *can't* be! There has to be more...there just has to be! *sobs*

  8. Apparently ModPlug's site now offers some sort of newbie pack which comes with some sort of tutorial and some decent samples - I haven't tried it out (someone care to fill me in?)

The ModPlug QuikStart kit comes with a nice installer, tutorial (includes sample songs), and a Microsoft GM DLS package. Whether the samples count as "decent" or not is debatable. ;) Get the kit at http://www.modplug.com/modplug/download.php3?session=&download=QSKit

Also, some people might be interested in Microsoft's DirectMusic Producer. A small warning, though: it is NOT designed to be a straight beginning-to-ending MIDI sequencer, although it is capable of doing so. It's more oriented towards interactive/dynamic, event-triggered in-game music. Don't be surprised if you end up writing scripts after using this program for a while. O_o;; Check this link for a list of DMP downloads that you can get, depending on the version of DirectX you currently have.

  9. Vwee! Post 1000 on this thread.

I still say Zeromus from FFIV is the hardest final boss ever.

I'm trying to kill him right now. Stupid hard type, there's no way to keep

your characters alive through that battle if you don't spend hours levelling up.

Steal his Dark Matter, heal non-stop with Rosa, and use Edge to throw everything you've got at him. You can also try summoning with Rydia if you ever get the chance. :P

Personal picks? I can't think of any *impossible* bosses, but Seymour Natus did give me a lot of trouble. Vagrant Story's final boss sucked, too...good thing I saved up on Vera items. I've heard things about Kingdom Hearts' Phantom, too.

  10. Man...I don't think I've told you how much I absolutely love this mix, Gecko. It might be because the original is so awesome, but still...I think the little things like the synth at 1:00 and the "pump up the volume" guy are what sets this apart. I even liked the "fake" ending...but like djp said, you could've worked a little more on the REAL ending.

Anyway, as Coach Z (and Ginnsu) would say...

    "Great jorb."

    ;)

  11. I would imagine most 7th graders wouldn't get the humor behind SeaLab 2021 (And yeah, you're free to say 'what humor?'), and I doubt they'd get the humor in this song, beyond "Huh huh, he said groin, huh huh."

Fart and dick jokes barely make me chuckle, but self-aware silliness makes me laugh. Big difference here.

    Don't you mean...BIZARRO silliness?

You know, I hope these "joke" remixes aren't just an old-school legacy because OCR was desperate for anything it could get...because I can think of a few BEER (and IMC) mixes that should be on the site. ;)
