  1. Another shot at this. I lowered the number of lead instruments used as suggested...I think that turned out pretty well. I made the bass patch on Harmless...I think I like how that synth works, as far as adjusting the volume of specific harmonics is concerned. I imported a single cycle waveform to manipulate. I made the first lead after the intro on Harmor, (where the stutter synth was last time), the bell lead is on Ogun. I lowered some of the high frequency content on that bell lead, as suggested. On the break, I layered the bell and Harmor leads after automating some filters for those parts.  The second time through the melodic content, I lowered the volume of the backing elements, I felt they were too loud. I also applied some transient processing on the trance pad.

For the bass and snare drums, I did some eq and compression work on the lower and middle frequencies, as well as applying some transient processing. I think they push through more now.

I do have a send that I was using, but I mainly used that for sidechaining the snare to the mids and highs. Someone said something about having reverb on that send instead of the individual tracks, but it didn't turn out well IMO, so I reapplied the individual reverbs, and put a slight side channel reverb on the send.

    I appreciate feedback, and thanks:)

Edit: I listened to this through a different set of headphones, and I think there might be too much sub bass on the bass instrument....I could easily lower the slider for the sub harmonic to fix that. Also, I added some chorus effect to the bass, but used Maximus to bring the stereo information back to center for the lower frequencies.

  2. Xaleph is correct, everyone should have khs essentials, there's a lot of good stuff there. It's weird, some vst's don't automate well, even if they sound good otherwise. FL Studio's Flangus is a good example. Also, I have tried using FL's peak controller to automate the fruity balance plugin, and that works horribly...just like described in original post..nasty latency and sound. Trial and error is sometimes involved.

  3. Ok, so I think I got the muddiness fixed at least some, I changed the snare a bit, I changed one of the leads, hope it's more interesting. I also brought stuff closer to center. The distortion thing you heard was a pluck bass, I changed that also. The previous version I only sidechained the lower frequencies of the bass, this time I did a normal sidechain.

11-24 edit Tried to fix last things mentioned. remix below, also in last post of thread

12-12 edit Latest attempt. Tried a few different things, Different bass, different sidechaining techniques, etc.

    12-19 edit below.

Thanks for feedback ahead of time!

  4. I actually just made myself a new sampled flute instrument in DirectWave. This new version was recorded in a room that wasn't as "live and ambient', and I also have four articulations (instead of two) that are chosen through velocity choice: sustain, two short articulations...double tongued...and a "legato" articulation that was played with no tongueing and a slower attack on the ADSR envelope for those samples. Also, I performed vibrato differently. I really get no time for live takes...I made the samples in 15 minutes because my wife had to pick up my daughter from school. If someone were to check my YouTube channel, they can see that I can play with a little bit of competence.

Also listening again, I think my drums are too dry, I think a multiband delay might be in order there. Also, I think I agree on those synth volumes, I also think the background pads are too loud...I actually already have an updated version that addresses the synth volumes issues.

Thanks for feedback, always appreciated. If I need another shot at this tune, I might add more to the beginning and end as you indicated also.

Edit: What do you think of the idea of a Picardy third at the end?

  5. Edit October 11.

One last revision here in this post. I added a couple tam tam hits, changed the timing of some triplets on the flute part, and also changed some notes because the reverb wasn't rendering correctly at on point....I altered the notes to get around that issue. Also made the drums just a tad more "wet", particularly the snare. Thanks!

  6. So this is something i wanted to try. I have a young kid and life is busy, so doing takes on the flute for a song is pretty much a no go. I played some long tones into my phone, and then loaded them into Directwave in FL studio. I didn't do a sample per note, I might try that it the future. I didn't get a chance to do different articulations either, but I think it sounds pretty decent with adjusting note lengths and velocities on the flute part. this is just a first portion, wanted feedback on sound. Thanks!

  7. This is another attempt at this tune:) I altered the drum samples...and the patterns somewhat also. I changed some of the synths. The triangle wave bass artifact that was mentioned before was probably caused by a chorus effect I didn't know I had on it I did the arrangement on Caustic 3 as I have been doing, but did a mastering pass in FL studio. Feedback appreciated!

Don't see an option to edit a post anymore...I also used low and high pass filters/shelfs on literally every individual track. It seemed to clean up the mix more than just putting those filters on the master.

  8. Here's my WIP of Terra's theme, done on FL studio mobile. The funny thing is, I just read my NO answer to my Speed Demon mix, and I played the first two sections on the little keyboard on the cell phone screen for a more organic feel, and the last section was sequenced, but I had a lot of fun automatic the sync parameter on that synth:) Thanks ahead of time for feedback.

  9. Here's the update!

So I altered the bass by separating the acid sounding arp from the meat of the bass, they were indeed one instrument. The main bass is now two triangle waves, one an octave higher than the other. The NES used those for it's bass channel, I figure it might be because of fewer harmonics to interfere with other instruments? I altered the decay and sustain to try to bring more punch to the instrument without increasing it's volume. I also brought it to mono. The acid sounding instrument is now separate, and I lowered the lower frequencies of it as well as adding a high pass filter. Also, I filtered some of the lower frequencies from other instruments in the arrangement. Hopefully some of this helps, and thanks ahead of time!
