The more well-known nintendo characters are the ones I'm the most concerned about. I'd like to see some kind of combination, but unless you really want to do it now, I think we can wait with that one for a while and just leave them as is for now. I need to sit down and read them both through thoroughly. Mouser X, your coding proposal sounds pretty complicated. It'd seem like an easier solution would be to have 2 separate, near-identical bios for both pictures. I don't really understand why they put in more than one picture for any of the characters, anyway, but that's how it is.

Yeah, linking the game manuals might be an idea... hm. Well, thanks for the additional info! I'll add the links to the first page. I've been trying to update my Captain Falcon bio. It's better now, but it's still not cool. Btw, watkinzez, I've been having second thoughts about your Samus bio. I remember saying that Mega Man and Mega Man X should have their own separate bios... but that's because they are different characters. As for samus, isn't she really the same person in all of the games? Link is a reincarnated hero, but I'd still want him to have only one bio (which I think can wait) (except for the deku link, which needed a bio of its own for clarity's sake), and... well... I don't really see a reason to let Samus have two bios. She's changed design-wise, but the storyline of all the games are connected, arent't they? Even though the games haven't appeared in the correct order, storywise. And in that case, we'd have to use both images in the same bio, and explain somewhere that the one image is from metroid prime and the other one from super metroid... Besides, it'd be silly to have different appearances lists for the two "versions" of Samus, and it'd be even sillier to have the same appearances list in both bios, because both "versions" can't exist in the same games. Meh. This post is messy. What I'm trying to say is I think it'd be better to have only ONE Samus bio, one that explains 1. the fact that the games haven't appeared in the "correct" order and that missing chapters are being filled in with every new game 2. how all the games are connected, 3. why there are two images and which one originates from which game as well as 4. Samus' past etc. All of this without revealing the entire storyline of the series.

I've tracked down (or, rather, stumbled upon) a website that hosts old game manuals! The site is located at http://vimmslair.com and will hopefully enable some of you to refer to game manuals in addition to the wikipedia pages in the sources list. I'll add the link to the first post as well.

Mega Man (Rockman World) II (Gameboy) - Airman Stage
Dafydd replied to Dafydd's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I'm just bumping this before it ends up on the wrong end of page 2. -
Thanks for the heads-up! I'm aware of the wikipedia problem, and I've been trying to find alternate sources for some of the bios, but usually to no avail. Not all characters have the same abundance of fansites as does Mega Man... The best solution would be to use game manuals, but they're hard to come by, especially if you're a rom gamer... You seem more than capable of writing a Mega Man bio. The info you provided just now is appreciated, and relevant for the sake of correction, but the level of detail in the bio will have to stay lower, but I'm sure you're aware of this already. Another problem with these bios is that eventually, the information in them will become obsolete. That's why I've been trying to avoid phrases like "Mega Man has had one game on every nintendo console but one", because it's likely to change sooner or later, and once this project is finished, I would hope not to have to maintain it by updating the bios every so often, but by adding games to the appearances list, period. However, the fact that Mega Man (or variations, such as Battle Network, which I don't count as the same character either) has appeared on every nintendo console is important for emphasizing the impact that this character has had on the gaming world. How we're going to forge this information into the bio without writing something that will be invalid in a few years, I don't know. When the bios are all written, we will begin editing them to fit the guidelines we've come up with until then, and then standardize, format and so on. Once this is done I don't want to have to edit the actual bio texts again, unless someone finds invalid information within them. Bios need not mention or describe every single game a character has appeared or starred in. They should have an "open ending", not by allowing for further content, but by not seeming like they're trying to stay up to date. They're an introduction to the character, not an encyclopedia on them. Bios should be written in a way that they can be read in a few years and still not contain invalid information. I should write this on the first page as well.

To some of them, gentleness is a necessity... although it comes naturally, most of the time.

All of these are good ideas. I'm not sure what kind of electric guitar I'd want though, preferrably a distorted bass. I haven't had the opportunity to try anything yet. Expect an update tomorrow.

Merry christmas to you, too. Ok, I'll leave the rhodes out. I actually had some in my very original version... Although they were a lot more jazzy/funky than those of USA's. Plus, they were mostly there to give the harps a fuller sound. But I'll leave them out. They don't go very well with the atmosphere I'm aiming for right now anyway...
-
I shall compile such a list and forge it into the first post in this thread. Give it a day or two.
-
Give me a few days and I'll try to present you with something... more presentable. To be honest, this is really the first song I've made that has a sound quality that I'm content with myself. I've been stuck with soundfonts and cakewalk so far, and even though I was often pleased with my work as far as arrangement goes, the sound quality always sucked. In the spur of the joy of the sound quality of reason, I just blasted away with all I had. I'll try not to let you down, although, of course, my WiP won't be perfect, either... EDIT: I just gave USA's mix a listen... and... I'd really like to know what exactly it was that you didn't like about it, so I don't make the same mistakes...
-
That's the idea.

I agree "Alex Kidd" sounds kinda odd, but then again, that's not for us to say, at least not within this project Btw, Watkinzez, I'd like to thank you for your massive contribution so far. I'll continue my efforts to correct errors of yours and others and my own, but so far your bios have kept a high level of quality.

Everything is sudden in this wip... nothing's finished, nothing's definite. The idea was to use a few minutes to build up the urge for a beat or something heavier, but I'm not happy with hardly anything... except the new harp lead I made and how the main melody suddenly becomes the background when the drums come in and echoes forward when the bass isn't playing... again, this is supposed to be the heaviest part of the song, and not to be dominating the entirety of it. I was thinking of using pizzicato, too... But once the drums come in, which should be at around past 2 or 3 minutes into the song, you'd want something more than pizzicato for a bass. And then I really think the drums and bass should sort of dominate the song at that point, or it'll sound really weird, having the heavier parts in the background... The alternative would be a remix of strictly orchestral nature, which I think would be a very strange approach to the source material. I also think there's only so much you could do with it if it were to be a rock arrangement, although I'd like to introduce some rock elements to what I'm doing now as well. If you dislike the whole idea, I'll scrap it. And if you find someone who can do it better, or if Aetherius thinks he can, and wants to, that's how it should be. I'm doing this in part because I want to help, and in part because of the glory that comes with being in a remix project. If my work doesn't help the project, then it doesn't belong. That said, I'm asking you for further constructive critisism, helpful opinions and suggestions before declining my offer. I'm also not saying you should let me in on the project until you are convinced that the end result is actually going to be something you like. Remember, it's a wip...
-
I'm not particularily happy about the bass, either. I would have liked something more distorted, but still not so synthy and, like you said, crunchy. It's one of the easier things to change though, once I find something better to replace it with. I was more worried about being all wrong on the atmosphere part. Or that I was making the completely wrong kind of music. But, yeah, let your team have their say.
-
Looks like you're right. One could ask oneself, though, why he's often referred to as Alex "the" Kidd. A mistakenly supposed correction of Engrish, maybe? BTW, I'd appreciate more of this kind of feedback if applicable.

*shakes fist* It'll be finished when people take the empty songs and finish them! From the look of the first page, all of the songs are taken... except maybe "Turtle Rock", so if that's the case, I'm willing to give it a try. Giving it a listen, I really like the song, and I'm surprised noone else has picked it already... Here's some of my previous (although mostly unfinished) work: vgmix page (Turtle Rock WiP "Sköldpaddsklippan" here) older stuff (Note that Wave2 uses a drum loop sample while as Wave3 does not) Orchestral, in case you want a sample of that too. I realize most of this doesn't have the "melancholy" feel to it or wouldn't work well to study too, but I can change. The problem is that the song itself gives me a rather haunting and stressful feel, which makes me lean into the same style as used in system shock 2... It doesn't sound like the song's gonna fit into that relaxing feel without some pretty heavy modification... but slowing it down might help somewhat. Beware that some of my above work is rather old. I'd look forward to doing some electronica again, instead of the rather futile rock attemps above... Gimme a go and I'll have a WiP for you before christmas eve. Now that christmas is here and I'll be outta school this wednesday, I'll have a considerable lot of more free time on my hands. EDIT: I couldn't help myself from making a WiP tonight... a very early, and possibly completely wrongful one, that I'm sure won't please everyone. It's on the VGmix page. It's my first song ever using reason, which I got from a friend this very night. Consider the style of the WiP so far to be what could be the very heaviest part of the entire finished song, stylewise. The rest will probably be softer and more ambient. The entire song could easily be made slower if necessary. I'm considering it already. Also - I'm aware that the bassline doesn't follow the gbs exactly, which gives it a rather different feel. I will include both this varation and the original one alternatingly in the final song. I'll probably finish this, be it part of the project or not. EDIT AGAIN: I added some reverb to the drums and the bass, which improved the song considerably, imho. Unfortunately, VGMix won't let me update until tomorrow, so here's another link. Looks like I've been doing this wrong from the start... I've based the song key on the second harp note instead of the first one, so my basslines are 2 semitones up from what they should be. Changing everything back seems unreasonable, though. There's just too much dissonance. (note that this isn't a problem in the GBS, I think it's my new harp lead that kinda screws it up...) The harp plays a scale of B, C#, F, G and putting the bass note to B here just shreds my ears here because there's both a diminished fifth and a minor sixth in the same chord (try playing the notes on a piano and you'll see). Doing it my way, putting the bass note to C#, there's a major third instead of a minor sixth, which makes for a chord that doesn't clash with the bass note as badly as the first. Unless others consider this change a huge problem for whatever reason, I'll keep my new chords. I'll try to let the original song play at some point (with the correct notes). Writing all this is all assuming you'll let me in on this, but you seemed less than happy about having to mix this track yourself and there doesn't seem to be anyone else around to do it... If you don't like the style of song at all, go ahead and tell me, and I'll try something else.

wow. Hopefully I'll have the time to read through all this during the weekend. Remember, copying right off wikipedia isn't all that interesting, really. If possible, please find more links to go with your characters and add them here, even if the links are found on the wikipedia page (but does not link to a wikipedia page). If you can, please refer to game manuals. I'll put that on the front page.

By the looks of it, it certainly has picked up steam during the last few days, thanks to a few heroic underlings of mine Some bios are better written than others, but it's nothing that can't be fixed. I haven't had the time to read them all through yet, but feel free to help each others out. P_N, you sometimes have some grammar issues, but your bios turn very well with a little help. Watkinzez, I think I get your point but I'm not sure I can agree. Eventually all bios will have to be posted somewhere else, but I'd prefer to have as much publicity as possible. In a perfect world, we would be able to have finished bios moved to their final destination (a place to which people would be linked when clicking the mascots on top) even as the rest of the project is under way. This would hopefully attract even more underlings to my realm. Anyway, I'm glad you are all posting bios and keeping the project alive, and I'm sorry for being unable to participate more actively for the time being. I will return with comments, and, possibly, corrections, shortly.

I've been hesitant to posting my own bios so far, mostly because I don't feel like I should complain on other's bios when my own aren't that great, either, but here's one... although it is admittedly a WiP, and very short, it is, at least, something to work with. Comments appreciated. Also, if anyone knows if F-Zero X Expansion Kit includes any appearances of Captain Falcon, please let me know... I need some kind of opinions on how big a cameo must be for the game the character cameoed in to be listed in the appearances list. It doesn't feel like the fact that captain falcon's helmet appeared in Kirby Super Star is reason enough to put that game in his appearances list. But in Warioware, inc., you can play the entire F-Zero game! Bleh. Captain Falcon Nintendo 1990 A 26th century bounty hunter / hovercraft racer, Captain Falcon is one of Shigeru Miyamoto's many creations, and was first introduced to the gaming world in Nintendo's Mode7 racer "F-Zero", one of the first SNES games ever to be released. Even though the game allows the player to choose from 4 different characters - each with their own hovercraft - Captain Falcon with his Blue Falcon is really the protagonist, or main character, of the game - he is even fortunate enough to have his own short comic in the game manual. A man of somewhat inflated self-confidence, he likes to think of himself as someone who kicks ass both on and off the track, and has stayed that way throughout the now long-running F-Zero series, except in the GBA release, F-Zero Maximum Velocity, where none of the original F-Zero characters were featured. Captain Falcon is also a playable character in Nintendo's all-character get-together - the Super Smash Bros series, and he, parts of him and/or his hovercraft have made small cameos in a variety of Nintendo games, such as Kirby Superstar, Super Mario RPG and Pokémon Stadium 2. He also stars in the F-Zero cartoon series "The Legend of Falcon" created in 2003. Um. Sure. Until this project is finished, I need all the help I can get. Just post whatever additional info you have on the Doom Trooper somewhere, maybe by adding it to your last post, and I'll take your additions into consideration. As stated earlier, all of the bios are subject to change... Except... maybe the one on Kingdom Hearts, which is our unofficial textbook example mascot bio. I've made some small changes to Vivi's bio. There's one thing though - what's the official name of the game - IX or 9? There's a lot of inconsistency here.
-
I've been trying to get my sig image around the forums a bit. It doesn't seem to have had any effect. I haven't had the time to write any bios myself. Maybe some time next week I'll find some.
-
If you think I'm taking you too seriously, then I think you're taking me too seriously. Wow, is that a catch 22? No, wait, it's just a potentially never ending loop. Meh. Another dumbass post. Sorry. At least it keeps you guys bumped.

"time constraints"? But the mix is already finished? Oh well. It doesn't surprise me that he doesn't like you, I mean, I don't know either one of you, but you give me the impression of being quite an asshole (in a good way, and possibly just for fun): But that's also what makes you funny and part of what makes this thread interesting to read. Every movie, book and forum (etc...) needs its "personalities". Anyway, if you think my suggestion is a bad idea, that's fine. I just thought it would be something to consider. ... and I hadn't read that very last sentence before. Sorry :-/ Now is the time when I'll just leave, Again, good luck.

Mega Man (Rockman World) II (Gameboy) - Airman Stage
Dafydd replied to Dafydd's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I'm gonna upload it to VGmix's WIP section as soon as they fix their database and allow me to select "unknown" as the original composer of this song. In the meantime, I'm just gonna have to do with this yousendit crap. Unless someone can give me advice on webspace place (one that requires no login, money, and one that can host maybe 5 megabytes and that doesn't expire). EDIT: I uploaded the song to VGMIX anyway. I can't wait forever for that database change. -
To anyone who's interested in grabbing Tal tal heights, please consider the idea I suggested back here. And to the organizer/coordinator/whatever - would this kind of music (the one suggested in the post that I just linked to) fit within the genre-wise boundaries of the project? ... I would love to join the project, but I'm already involved in a thousand things and this would just be one of the many that would become neglected anyway. But as soon as next week, I could squeeze a collab into my schedule (by neglecting a few hours of sleep every week) if someone likes the idea I had. Otherwise I'm not really interested (although I realize that since I'm not okayed for the project I won't be considered anyway). If you really want a rock/orchestral/electronica version of every song in the soundtrack, you should have grabbed zircon before he posted his "Clash at the mountains" in the "old fashion" way. I don't see the point in making yet another remix of tal tal heights if it doesn't differ significantly in style from zircon's mix, better then to drop it completely from the project, despite the fact that it's one of the most memorable songs in the entire soundtrack.
