  1. I've run PLAY and Kontakt just fine on my Windows 10 PC. I've never head a problem with my VSTs, other than having constantly reconfigure my directories as I upgrade to bigger SSDs.

However, Windows 10 adds new features when it updates itself. This means it takes more resources to run with every update, and my FX 8350 processor doesn't go as far as it used to. Hopefully Ryzen will hit a nice price-point for an upgrade, or maybe it is time to make the switch over to Intel.

  2. I remember seeing some of these extended techniques in my college orchestration class. Sadly I've never played this piece, but it sounds pretty cool.

Here's a link to a paper that explains the symbols.

It doesn't explain the slashes very well (he says hit the string with the nut, which is impossible), but if I were playing this I would hit the fingerboard/strings with the wood or maybe the screw of the bow. That is what it sounds like in the recording, and I'll bet it is the main percussive sound you are hearing. High frequency pizzicato decays very fast, and is not very loud, so I doubt that is the "percussive" sound.

Gario's way of doing it looks good. If you are limited with libraries, try a Bartok Pizz for the percussive effect, or a col legno patch if you have it.

    Happy sampling!

  3. It is almost Thanksgiving in the United States, and that means black Friday sales are starting to appear.

PreSonus Studio One is half-off on every version. You need a code that they provide to you. It goes until Nov. 28th. When Fl 12 came out, several people jumped ship to S1. (FL 12 got a lot better when patches came out, in my opinion) I think S1 is a sharp and fun DAW.

Ableton is taking 20% off just about everything until Jan 11th. I recently took a Mooc class on Live 9, and enjoyed using their DAW. Their Push educational initiative helped me start a music technology club with my middle school students.

Sweetwater has some nice black Friday deals in general all-week, but they managed to get better deals on izotope products than izotope's main website... I personally like izotope, although it is a resource draining plugin.

Cinematic Strings 2 is on sale until the 28th as well. I love this string library! They also have their new string library on sale as well.

I am sure there are others, but this is what I have seen so far.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. Hi All!

My wife and I have built a nice house, and I'm looking at turning the upstairs loft into a studio. Right now the sky is the limit, and was wondering where would be a good place to look for some quality studio furniture or DiY instructions. It seems that most of my normal places either sell stuff too small or really high end mixing consoles.

The only real requirement is whatever furniture I end up with needs to accommodate an 88-key controller and two monitor screens.

  5. Hello everyone!

I'm trying to do a remix of some of Bach's music with Gerudo Valley in an interesting way. There are at least three different Bach works referenced here. I feel I need to rework the drums and rhythms at some places. Also, I'm still working out the ending, but I wanted to share it here.

Let me know what you think!

[ ] Too conservative - sticks too close to the source

[ ] Too liberal - not enough connections to the source (too much original writing)

[ ] Too much direct sampling from original game audio

[ ] Borrows heavily from non-source material (eg. a theme from a movie)

    [ ] Too loud

    [ ] Too quiet

    [ ] Low-quality samples

    [ ] Unrealistic sequencing

    [ ] Generic/cliche sound choices

[ ] Drums have no energy

    [ ] Overcompressed (pumping/no dynamics)

[ ] Mixing is muddy (eg. too many sounds in the same range)

[ ] Lacks coherence overall (no "flow")

[ ] Not enough changes in sounds (eg. static texture, not dynamic enough)

    [ ] Pace too plodding

    [ ] Too repetitive

    [ ] Too short

    [ ] Abrupt ending

PERSONAL COMMENTS (positive feedback, specifics on checklist criticisms, any other thoughts)

  6. 1. I use a Focusrite 2i2

    2. It sounds good, is stable, and I don't need more than two I/Os.

    3. Really I just got lucky. I did a lot of research, but was still unsure. The Phantom Power was important for my mic, but I didn't really know much about the different brand reputations.

    4. Look for what you need, not what you want. I may want to look cool with 10 I/Os, but do I really need that for guitar/vocals or violin? Not really.

    5. I'd avoid trying to sub in a soundblaster 24 bit with ASIO4ALL. Yeah it's technically the same bit depth and sample rate at a third the cost, but it was a huge difference getting the 2i2 over that.

    6. The 2i2 is nice, but get what works for you, $ and performance wise.

    7. I can box it up, use it with my laptop to record students and such. I used it to give an FL demo to a bunch of middle school kids last year.

  7. My friends and I found OCR back in 2003 in my high school programming class as freshmen. The first OCR I heard was...

I haven't stopped listening. Started remixing during undergrad music school, and started learning to produce in the last two years.

I also have an obsession with remixing Gerudo Valley. I blame it on hearing djpretzel's "Gerudo Interlude" (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR00368) early on.

  8. True, I was also a lot easier to impress when I was in middle school. Plus the N64 was such a huge step up from the SNES. I wonder if the new game is going to further the Andros story anymore. I never played SF Assault, so I'm a bit out of the story loop. It blew my mind to find out that Andros is Koine Greek for "man". I don't know if Nintendo meant it to mean that, but it changed the whole story for me.

  9. Similar to DrumUltimA,

I tell my students all the time to focus on one instrument for awhile and then branch out. Pick a main instrument that you can't live without. Treat the rest as secondaries. If you play drums, do you play keyboard percussion? That might help you a bit with the piano skills. If you have to do both, prioritize.

I've also found that in the tonal instruments, there are principles that carry over between them. For instance, my main instrument is violin, but violin technique is very useful on all strings. (also guitar hero and rock band) Further, Piano helped me understand the basic structure in music, which lends toward composition. Learning to improve on any instrument helps in composition skills as well.

Bottom line, look for those connections and similarities. You are not just learning an instrument, but music.

  10. Loundness seems to be a genre specific thing. Classical tracks rarely are maxed out and I often have to change the volume based on the work. Probably because of the dynamic nuances classical music has.  (Although I have noticed that more modern tracks are louder than say something recorded 20 yrs ago.)

  11. When I ended up with FL, I had tried Ableton, Reason, Pro Tools, and Garageband. I was so split on which one (although not Garageband) to get, and I could make a song in all of them. FL won out because I got it as a gift. So I'm still learning it and welcome the visual changes to 12. I don't have a massive sample library or older midi equipment, so it works for me.

I get that FL is not the same FL it was years/months ago. Kind of the feeling that I get whenever Microsoft releases a new version of Windows. I would have stuck with Win98 forever if I could have and only got off XP around two years ago. Same thing happens with web browsers. Use Firefox for awhile, switch over to Chrome for a time, maybe check out Edge for the future. Maybe.

However, as a relative newbie, I am concerned about the stability issues. I've only had it crash once, and I've found that Komplete tends to work smoother for me that it did in 11. So far, so good. Are there examples of consistent crashing? What kind of conditions cause it to crash?
