  1. IMO Sakimoto's worst work objectively speaking.

It had like two or three truly memorable tracks at most. Compare that to about 30 of them for FFT.

I had a quick run through the tracklist. I found the following tracks memorable, with the bolded ones the ones that I found myself humming or singing in my head a lot.

    Royal City of Rabanastre

    Boss Battle

    Lowtown Rabanastre

    Dalmascan Westersand

    Nalbina Fortress

    Nalbina Underground Prison

    Theme of the Empire

    Chocobo FFXII Version

    Esper Battle

    Jahara, Land of the Garif

    Eruyt Village

    Clash on the Big Bridge

    Time of Rest

    White Room

    Sochen Cave Palace

    A Moment's Rest

    Neighbourhood of Water

    The Cerobi Steppe

    A Land of Memories

    The Feywood

    Ashe's Theme

    To the Summit

The Esper Battle music in particular was absolutely outstanding. Best track on the album by far. So dramatic and cinematic.

  2. September 2007 update

DQD is nearing completion. The majority of the tracks have been completed, with the rest being worked on. A few are remaining open so we're still welcoming new mixers. We'll be waiting until the FF7 project has been released before considering a release date for DQD. Plus we'd like to make sure that everything is taken care of properly, instead of releasing prematurely. We've waited this long, might as well do it right!

Potential new mixers: As there are only a few tracks left, we're looking to fill them as soon as possible. If you're interested in an open track, just start a WIP and send it to me. If it sounds like what I'm after, I'll get you to finish it and add you to the list.

  3. Like I said, I can't remember how I beat him. I do know I was expecting him to be super difficult, but his HP just went down so damn fast, it was an easy battle.

I didn't read any guides, I can't even remember if he used darkja. Maybe I got lucky and he didn't hit me with anything like that? I remember him putting up the paling, but I switched my attack gambits to the strongest magic I had immediately and he went down fast.

I did have most of the strongest weapons by that point, and I was level 99 all around. But keep in mind that a good gambit set-up can overcome pretty much anything an enemy throws at you. Arise, Faith and Curaja going consistantly, especially in a short battle, keeps everyone going.

  4. This is one of those remixes that sounds like it's pretty newbish, but is produced really well. For the dullness of the sounds that you've used, you've actually used them really well.

The source was pretty cool, for a LoZ piece. I like what you've done with it, I can hear the changes you've made, they sound quite obvious to me.

We're having thunderstorms outside while I'm listening to this, which is mixing with the mood of the song pretty awesomely. Just thought I'd mention that.

Anyway. I'm going with BGC on this one.

    YES

  5. Reverb on the beats? Sounds awful. The mix is pretty much just a rip of the source with a rather beginnerish attempt at Trance-ifying it.

I dunno why this was posted to the panel. Positive feedback so you can improve I suppose? Don't use reverb on all the drums/percussion, especially in trance. Make sure the sound is clean. Above anything else, actually remix the source.

    NO OVERRIDE

  6. Ah, OK cool. Perhaps the link to the lyrics at the end of the writeup should be removed since it doesn't do anything. I also find it interesting how my remix keeps changing games. I submitted it under Final Fantasy, then it changed to Final Fantasy 7, and then to Final Fantasy 5. I think a script should be written where the Final Fantasy game to which the remix is assigned is generated randomly and is different each time! :)

Consider that my fault. Since the remix is more closely based on Boco's theme from FF5, I put my foot down to get it moved there.

Besides, Final Fantasy 5 doesn't have enough remix love. Where you're lost under the tidal wave of Final Fantasy 7 remixage, you're free to swim around in the shallow pools of Final Fantasy 5.

  7. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt in that the intro to the piece serves to build up to the source usage. ie: I'm not voting on whether the remix uses the source in XX% of the mix, but rather how it's used when it makes an appearance. I think Siamey's done a decent enough job of utilising the source from the points that he used it. Unlike some of his past mixes where even when the source made an appearance, it was either liberally used, or it was sampled directly.

My vote stands. Others can reject it if they feel it's not enough to warrant a pass.

  8. Trance.

    NO OVERRIDE

ok, I like it. The intro is fuck-long as usual. But at least this time the parts of the mix that are actually to do with the source pay close attention to the arrangement. I'd hope for a little more rearrangement when it comes down to it.

I think Siamey needs to stop wasting his time trying to remix stuff for OCR. I dunno what it's like elsewhere in the world, but in Perth, from about 10PM-6AM, all night radio stations are dedicated to playing this kind of music without any breaks in between. Siamey could dedicate his life to generating this sort of music for that scene. Could you imagine a 3 hour long trance sessions consisting of just Final Fantasy themes one after the other? It sounds like a nightmare to me, but you could totally see that being played on the radio and just having people chill out to it. The important thing is that I think it could work.

With this track. I would've liked to have seen a lot more rearrangement. But for once, I'm going to uber-kind and I'm going to give Siamey the benefit of the doubt here. I think there's just enough to pass this. But I'm also strongly recommending that Siamey stops submitting these kinds of mixes to OCR. It's not fair on him that we keep interfering with his style of mixing, and it's not fair on us to have to reject good material like this due to our standards.

    YES

  9. I could certainly see Opening To Hell sounding like a Nine Inch Nails', A Warm Place, Eraser or Reptile-esque song.

I'd be quite pleased to see someone do Opening to Hell in the style of NIN's Eraser. Some good hard industrial drumming would go well with that.

Jack: Glad to hear you're still on board.

  10. For Delta-Q-Delta, the doom 2 remixing project. I've had a few people offer to do it, but they all eventually lose interest and stop replying to my check-up emails. The project is nearly completed and we desperately need someone to make us a website to meet our requirements.

If you're good with web-design and art, and you think you can work reasonably fast to get this done for us, reply here or send me a PM/email with some references so I can tell you're not bullshitting. I normally wouldn't ask publicly like this, but I'm getting desperate.

The site would require a secure way of posting news updates, bios for the mixers, links to the tracks and mirrors. Specific site design and logo ideas would be supplied to anyone who shows interest.

  11. For those interested, the tracks I've received have been mastered, rendered and finalised for the album, except for those neighbouring unfinished tracks. Once I've received DJRedlight, Zircon/Pixie and Djpretzel's finished pieces I'll call that an end to the mixing stage even if the last few tracks haven't been finished. Want to get this project out the door without resorting to accepting low-quality material as filler.

It's likely the album will be one CD this time around.

  12. That is completely possible without you being unable to equip an awesome weapon or armor that happened to find lying around but wait... you spent your license points on abilities instead of equipment. Now you're out of luck.

No other RPG has made us choose between equipment or skills.

I went through most of the game without using any licence points except for when I needed to learn a certain spell or equip a particular item. So once I realised that you could boost your skills on the licence board, I was well towards the end of the game. Never ran out of points and never had a problem with the game while I wasn't using them. So the complaint against the licence board doesn't really sit with me.

  13. Well, a good number of the ones I listed in my first post are as blatant as the E3M3 example you just mentioned, if that gives you any indication about how similar they are.

And yeah, I know the whole "OMG DOOM MUSIC IZ A RIPOF" thing is older than dirt, but it's interesting to see to just what degree this whole thing went.

Back when we were deciding what tracks from Dark Side of Phobos were elligable to be added to the site, I emailed Romero about the whole thing. Might as well share it with you guys here since it's relevant to the music production for Doom:

    Hey TO,

You can get the info on all the songs that were released with DOOM that were based on real songs right here: http://www.answers.com/topic/making-of-doom

Now, the story behind the process of creating DOOM’s music is that I gave Bobby Prince a list of songs and groups that I wanted him to make versions that sounded SIMILAR TO but not an exact copy of. Well, his first delivery to me had several exact replicas of the songs I requested and I told him that we couldn’t publish those songs because they were exactly like the original, only MIDI-fied. So Bobby went back and did lots more music which I then chose from and included in the game.

The problem is that I didn’t know that the first batch of music that he sent was all 100% replica – I could only recognize the ones I knew because I wasn’t the one who listened to Slayer and Pantera (that was Adrian and he originally provided me a list of songs he liked for Bobby’s first batch). So I mistakenly chose songs from the first batch that were replicas and songs from the second batch to put in the game. I found out years later that the songs I thought were cool from the first batch were replicas of Slayer and Pantera songs! Well, it was too late at that time to change anything so…

    That’s the story. J

Subject: Question about DooM Music on behalf of OverClocked ReMix

    G'day John,

Since you're a fan of some of our remixes over at Overclocked ReMix (www.ocremix.org) we were wondering if you could help clear something up for us with regard to the doom music.

We've heard rumours that some of the music from Doom is based either loosely or completely on original rock songs from artists such as Pantera, Slayer, Alice in Chains and Metallica released in the late 80's/early 90's.

We're wondering if you'd be so kind as to clear this up for us once and for all, and if you have time provide us with a list of which doom tracks fall into this criteria, and the corresponding rock pieces.

Could you please send any replies to both this address the_orichalcon@hotmail.com and also to the OCR email address creator@overclocked.org

    Thankyou for your time,

    ~TO, on behalf of OCR

I'm assuming this set of UNxx midi's is that original set that Prince gave him.

  14. [23:43] * The_Orichalcon beats off GeckoYamori to Another Soundscape - Jade Cocoon People Made of Stone OC ReMix [04:05m/192Kbps/44KHz] !tardis to download.

    [23:43] <The_Orichalcon> ooh, tribal

    [23:43] <The_Orichalcon> and it's non-sucky tribal

    [23:43] <The_Orichalcon> PUBLIC #OCREMIX JUDGEMENT

[23:44] <The_Orichalcon> bell thing is pretty kewl. the tribal percussion is gentle and well balanced in the background

[23:44] <The_Orichalcon> flutey-thing sounds fakey, but fits well as well. Good synth build-up to 1:19

[23:45] <The_Orichalcon> rock drums are an interesting idea. They work well, but I'm expecting guitar

[23:45] <The_Orichalcon> switch-up at 2:26 was awesome, reminds me of Schala's music in CT

[23:46] <The_Orichalcon> yeah this is pretty kewl. Just need to check it against the source

[23:47] * The_Orichalcon touches RamaMacBook to Kimitaka Matsumae - Syrus Village [01:40m/224Kbps/44KHz] !tardis to download.

[23:47] <The_Orichalcon> ok, compared to the source, the drop in the quality of the instruments is evident. But it's a brighter soundscape, so it's negligable

[23:47] <The_Orichalcon> arrangement is a worry, the flutey lead is pretty close to being verbatim.

[23:48] <The_Orichalcon> Builds up well as a more pop-rock kind of piece, but for that kind of genre switch I'd expect it to be a bit heavier with more than just synths added

[23:48] <The_Orichalcon> anyway, sounds good enough to pass

    [23:49] <The_Orichalcon> so YES
