OCR01062 - *YES* Xenogears 'Live from the Yggdrasil' *FT*
Malcos replied to Beatdrop's topic in Judges Decisions
This is very well played, and has a damn nice sound. It's a little different in it's placement (bear with me!) in that instead of having that 'I'm playing in a concert thing' it has more of a 'private playing at someone's house' feel which gives it a feeling of intimacy which is very nice indeed. YES By thw way, what's that stuff happening near the end? I've never heard that before. Something up with the pedals? -
This is interesting, but yes, essentially this is the same sound quality as the original. We need higher quality sounds! I don't think this fits in with the OC thang. Nice selection of drums beats incidentally. NO
-
I'm shooting you an email because I have submitted my track numerous times over the last 6 months, but have never seen an word of anyone reviewing it for the OverClocked ReMix site. The track is available here: There's a 'blurb' about it here: The game is Dig Dug. The song is Quarter Cavalcade. The artist is Tomas Diablo.

Heh ok, I'm kinda just holding off for the update now. I like this, but the two things it really needs is more variation, and perhaps another texture layer. NO (Awaiting update)

*NO* Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 'Final Hour Fatal Error'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Ahh my ears, and I'm listening on speakers! I think it's that scratchy sounding hi hat. The way this song is eq'ed tires out the ears really quickly. The arrangement is good, no real qualms about that, but my main concern is the mixing and eq. NO -
This is a good arrangement, and I do like the dissonance (as always). I thought that some sustain was needed occasionally, as some sections felt quite dry. In addition, it was played a little too straight, too on the beat. This could have done with some more humanity methinks. NO
-
I'm liking the sound here, nice chords! Good arrangement, keeps the listener's interest throughout. The only question here is whether this is different enough from the original. I am going to say yes, but only just. YES

OCR01063 - *YES* Super Mario Bros. 3 'Lose-Your-Way Maze'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Oooo, loving the slap bass straight away. This is some funky mix for sure. Sound is good, and arrangement leaves you wanting some more funk - unfortunately because of the length of this mix that doesn't happen, but nevertheless this is still a worthy mix. YES -
I started listening to this and thought 'What! This is just using the default fruity sounds!' Then I saw the thread. My bad... I agree with everything that has already been said. What this mix needs is original synths, some reverb, and more texture, preferably provided with a slow attack instrument such as pads or strings. It's got the beginnings of a groove, but needs more work to it. Keep going. NO
-
Oh for goodness' sake, the 1/32 hit snare fill with sweeping siren synth thing AGAIN?!?! That's the kind of thing you do like once in a song. ONCE! Well that was annoying. Annoying synths, and then it just fades out. ANNOYING. NO

OCR01054 - *YES* Flashback 'Nostalgy Dimension'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Very laid back feel here. Does remind me of the soundtracks from the old PC games, so the title is very appropriate. Arrangement is quite good, etc. Not much to say really, I think this mix is effective and achieves it's purpose. YES -
I like this mix. It was seperated into 3 motions, and I think it was well timed. It had a groove, good movement, a certain charm to it. The sounds were fresh, cool and well-chosen. The ending leaves the listener dead in the water though, and I think the mix could have been much improved with a nice outro. YES
-
The intro had promise, what with the scary sounds and all. Unfortunately, this mix didn't really deliver. It was very repetitive, it was just the same riff over and over again, with the same straight beat. The slowdown at 3.44 with the new beat and speedup was weird, but added some well needed variety. Weird pitch bends! For such a length, I expected a lot more. NO
-
This is loud and aaarrrgghh my ears! The synth choice and mixing isn't good at all. Drums sounded good, but that is not enough to overide the fact that this was mixed badly. Did somone say rip? NO
-
I think what this mix lacked more than anything else was cohesion. I thought the parts were played well, however there were some noticeable exceptions. The sax sounded good at times, and then fake at other times. I thought the note at 44 seconds in was off tune, and it jarred me out of the song. The sax is also unpredictable, coming in at odd times. The piano playing was good, but a better patch could have been chosen, and some of the same reverb over all the instruments could have really helped pull the sounds together. Gonna give this one a NO, but I would like to see a resubmit.
-
This was dissapointing, it's basically the movie theme sped up. I really think that the tempo speed up shatters the groove of the mix. The sound isn't bad, but this mix was more subtraction than an addition IMO. NO And yeah, what Vigilante said. This mix needs more vibe.

*NO* Shadowgate 'Sailing The Sea of Bauttal'Tu'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I like the percussion on this (phat!) but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of actual music here. Yeah there is an 8bit sounding synth going through it, but not much else in terms of layering. Good mixing and engineering, but lacks musicality to some extent. NO -
What? Largely down to me? This is a dilemma. The mix is beautiful, and although there is a slight fuzzy noise underneath, it almost adds to the character. However, it is not very different from the original. I like it too much, so I'm going to say YES

*NO* Donkey Kong Country 'Funky Kong's Breakbeat Adventures' *FT*
Malcos replied to Protricity's topic in Judges Decisions
This mix, like has been said, definitely has groove. Unfortunately, there is not enough variation in terms of instrumentation. The different breaks on the drums near the end was welcome, but perhaps his could have done with a breakdown? NO -
This is very short. The sounds are nice, but I didn't feel as if the style was different enough from the orginal - this may have had a chance to manifest had the mix been longer. NO
-
This was just a drumloop over the orginal, and you know we don't do that kinda thing here. It seemed like there were no original ideas in this at all, nothing from the remixer's mind. NO

*NO* Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker 'Cruising the Great Sea'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
The drums on this are kinda strange. They would work for an intro, but not through the whole mix. The song doesn't go anywhere, and the melody just repeats. There were some parts where it seemed as if things were a little off time in the beginning, like the drums were on one groove and the brass was on another. Ending was non-existent. Too much silence on the end of the file. NO Basically what this needed to do was progress, it was just like a never ending beginning. -
This hasn't got the same vibe that Haroon's stuff usually has. It's very repetitive, and the synth choice is pretty rough on the ears. There was no breakdown either - quite dissappointing. NO
-
Wha? After listening to the whole thing, I don't think it's recognisable as a metropolis mix, and will have much of the listeners scratching their heads. Yeah it's got an 80's feel, and the sound is passable, the arrangement satisfactory, but this is just not metropolis. NO It is rare to find a mix that bears no resemblance to the original.

OCR01060 - *YES* Dragon Warrior 'Kingdom Come' *FT*
Malcos replied to Beatdrop's topic in Judges Decisions
The arrangement is really good IMO, with the notable exception of the huge stop before the choir voices came in. If the instruments all suddenly increased in volume before the stop it would have seemed like an exclamation mark rather than a drop off, and it would have been more effective. Also major clippiness around the 2.20-2.40 region. Despite this, it is still very emotive, so therefore I give it a YES
