*NO* Final Fantasy 4 'Golbez, Clad in Death'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
The texture here is very think indeed. I do think that it fits the feel that the mixer was looking for. The drums are sharp and cut through the think strings etc very well. I'm also liking the sub bass thing, giving it some weight. It is a very thick texture, but I think it works here. YES -
Wow this sounds great. Oh, rip? Damn. NO And this sounded sooooo nice. Add some more orginal material and then resubmit.
-
Yeah, this is just like a flat line. There's no change, no progression, no deviation. NO
-
This sounds pretty good, if not just a tad weak imo, but a yes anyway. YES I'm not familiar with the music though, having never played this game. It may change if deemed to be a rip, but I seriously doubt it will be.

*NO* Mega Man 2 'Time 4 Sum Bubble Bursting'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Oh this is hard one this one. It starts off, and lets you get kinda bored with the very long intro, then explodes into a breakbeat frenzy. I like the idea, and it has been done well, but.... Ok listened again. YES -
Not much here really. This song is like sweets when they're all stuck together, it's very muddy. The whole sound of the mix is not pleasing to the ear, and the guitar is not convincing. The song doesn't evolve or progress. NO
-
This is very organic, which is a good thing in itself. However, there are some issues. First of all, the bitrate isn't very high and it's quite noticeable. At times, a lot of low notes are played which all kinda melds together and feels really muddy, in a nonstylistic sense. I don't think many would find this engaging. Only the votes will tell. NO

The extra vibratoey strings make this very interesting indeed! This mix does achieve it's purpose, although I think it could be improved with some more reverb or perhaps a delay to the piano to give it more ambience. But anyway, YES

OCR01102 - *YES* Marble Madness 'Marble Dancefloor'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Gets a bit repetitive, but I think groove/vibe always makes up for it. YES -
This worked, that's all I can really say. It worked. He kept it flowing and changing, it was engaging. (hey that rhymes!) YES
-
Not much has been added here. I think that the addition of drums would add the 'hardship' element to it (in the context of war). Leaving the drums out just leaves the sadness element to it. That aside, this mix is very short and doesn't develop, more more more! And you could have at least faded it out. Nice choice of song to remix, but work on this some more and then resubmit. NO

OCR01089 - *YES* Sonic the Hedgehog 3 'Snow Motion' *RESUB*
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Yeah it is a repetitive, but there's something about the groove of it, it just works. There's a sexiness to this as well, amplified with the finger clicks. Or maybe I'm just reading into it too much. Anyway, YES -
Ouch! The guitar is like an audio razor blade on my ears. Too much distortion and high frequency combined. I think more important than the lack of bass is that this needs to be remastered to a gentler sound before it can be released. You must have strong eardrums! NO Ouch.
-
Not much of anything here. Nice cool sounding freshness, but this is just like an intro. This needs some development. NO
-
I'm really liking this groove, and the instrumentation used. Unfortunately, the use of two such complex melodies near the start and end of the song (sitar? and flute) means it is quite an effort to listen to some of it! It is this one small but very significant issue that means that this is a NO. I would like to see a resubmit of this for sure.
-
Very interesting mix, good sounds and percussion, with lots of low level sound effects and bites in the background. There are some issues with this mix however. There seems to be a gap of middle frequencies which is quite noticeable imo, and this mix does need some more meat to it, a slightly thicker sound underneath or something similar. It could also do with a little more variation, although the percussive elements are very entertaining. I would definitely like to see this resubmitted. This could be a great mix. NO for now.

*NO* Freelancer 'Terminal Velocity Steelurai'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This song was very repetative and seemed to go on for a long time because of this. The sounds were low quality. NO -
The piano when this starts is so nice I was thinking this was gonna be a yes, but the guitars are reeeeaaaalllly baaaaaaad. When they enter the mix, all you can think about it how bad they sound - it's like extreme pain. This has to be the starkest contrast of good and bad sounds I have ever heard. The guitars are making this a NO Beautiful piano though.
-
Hmm, this has promise, but then doesn't deliver on that promise. The problem for me is that this is all on one level, no climax, no breakdown, no change or transitions in the whole song with regard to mood or direction. One gets bored towards the end of the second half. I would say keep the magical sound of the mix and develop this into something more after about a minute and a half. NO
-
This is a hard one. The beat was good, but it is a loop. There is also quite a lot of distortion/clipping that I could hear throught the mix. It is repetitve, but quite entertaining. I can see this being liked by quite a few, I've given a lot of no's today and I'm feeling controversial. YES

These samples are cheap, and spoil the feel completely. There is also not enough original material for my liking. NO

OCR01106 - *YES* Darius 'Silver Hawk Legacy'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Very nice 80's feel. Could have done with a climax, but good nevertheless. YES Edit: lol I put a no instead of a yes! That's never happened before... Thanks for pointing that out for me Gray! -
I thought the intro was very well done, but the synths in this song are way too similar sounding. The percussion was very weak, the song would have a lot more impact if it was more pronounced imo. This mix has potential, but needs some more work. NO
-
Hmm, this is more of a groove than anything else. There isn't much of anything to actually focus on, like a melody or anything. Most of what I'm saying has already been said. NO

*NO* Guardian Legend 'Password Entry (TGL Pass Mix)'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This sounds good, unfortunately it is missing something. Like a real melody. This is comprised mostly of just beat, and would be great for background music when there is a game demo or something, but to listen to on it's own is rather boring. A lot of repetition and no real focus makes this a NO
