*NO* Sonic Adventure 2 'Spawns of the Great Pumpkin'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Good idea. But... The music was not good, the piano and string samples were bad. The music was repetitive, and although that's ok in rap, this is OC - mix it up. The piano is waaaay too loud and annoying, I can't hear the lyrics, and I needed to follow it via the txt file. Additional Lyrics are ok. The vocal recording is yuk, clipping all over the place, and the vocal is not warm at all. I'm guessing this was recorded using one of those desktop mics you get with your pc. Don't like the cutoff ending. I reckon this could have been pulled off, but the execution of the idea just didn't cut it. NO -
Nice drums, and loads of effects on them, it's a pity that all the other instruments like the strings, xylophones etc didn't get any reverb, and so they sounded dry. The mix was really unbalanced because of it, and I didn't like the cutoff ending. I recommend adding some reverb and working some more on the non percussive stuff, and re-submitting. NO

Wow look at the eq response on my winamp! I knew it wasn't just me, there's too much of a 'smiley face' mastering going on here, and so this mix lacks mid frequencies and it can't breathe. Didn't sound very Jazzy to me, and the fadeout didn't suit this mix. NO
-
I would be saying how great a mix this is, but for one thing. This mix needs some high frequencies BADLY. It's as if a low pass filter has been applied to the whole song. You guys need some new speakers or something. This is a crying shame. NO
-
Wow, yeah those strings really are loud at the beginning. IMO their velocity is too much for this song, they could have been a lot softer. A couple of the harp arpeggio notes sound like they could be off. Interesting use of delays, but sometimes they do clash creating a bit of a mess. I swear I can hear this mix ducking as well, like it's been over compressed. It's not too bad, but there are several issues with this piece. NO
-
This mix is kinda short. The guitars don't do it for me at all. They just don't sound nice to my ears, and the drums are quiet at the beginning of the mix. From 1.16-1.30 and 1.45-1.59 the snare sounds like a gun, the arrangement isn't much, and I really wanna say NO

OCR01007 - *YES* Moon Patrol 'The Road to Tyco Station'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Well arranged, and did a good job of giving us the main melody again and again whilst keeping an interest with other stuff like the panning hats in the background. The electric piano part was good and well needed IMO. The ending isn't really to my taste, but other than that, the mix is OCR quality. I'll give it a YES -
Not too sure about that note where it drops a semitone in the intro. But I think the arrangement is very good. Bit too much silence on the mp3 after the fade though. This would get a yes from me, but 64kbps and 22khz? Come on now... NO

OCR01005 - *YES* Maniac Mansion 'Flashbulb Funk'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
At the beginning of the mix it feels like there are some sync problems, but the situation does improve drastically. From the last half of the mix it sounds like something I could hear on the radio. Apart from one or two chords I was unsure about on the rhodes near the end, and the slight off timing, this is a good mix. For me, the good outweighs the bad. Funky. YES -
This is definitely a borderline mix. It's soft and cool, but could have done with a soft kick IMO. Is is definitely the second half of the mix that has persuaded me to say YES
-
The kick drum adds an interesting rhythm, pity that creativity could not be extended to other elements of the mix. The other percussion apart from the kick is really annoying. Midi rip you says? *shrug* Oh well it was going to be a NO anyway.
-
Oh damn, take that click sound out of the bass at the beginning! Use the ADSR filter! In addition to that click (which just gets more and more annoying), this mix doesn't have anything in it. There is no development, no texture, it's too short, and with a cut-off ending. NO
-
The mixing is pretty bad. You don't need to have all the instruments really loud, some of the synths could have done with being a little quieter. The mix itself doesn't really go anywhere, and I found it quite stale. NO

*NO* Donkey Kong Country 'El Galleon del Cocodrilo'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
At times, this mix has too much moving all at once, so it sounds confused. Is this country, dance or rock? At times you get instruments that come in that don't sound like they are in tune with the rest of the piece. And those guitar samples are really bad. How come this was faded out when there was an ending there. If you wanted to do that the fade should have been completed before the end of the song, because I can still hear the ending! NO -
*WITHDRAWN* Kirby's Dream Land 'Jungle Greens'

Can't download this mix for some reason, not even off the judging webspace. Weird. -
*NO* Tekken Tag Tournament 'Xiaoyu Beat Me Down' *FT*
Malcos replied to analoq's topic in Judges Decisions
This is minimalist, but done well IMO. Effects and reverb keep the texture from being too thin, and filters and sweeps keep the listeners interest. There are some really groovy beats in here as well. Lots of mixing up of the original bassline, although this could have been even better if some orginal notes had been added. YES -
OCR01004 - *YES* Altered Beast 'The Fallen's Grave'
Malcos replied to m68030's topic in Judges Decisions
I'm not too familiar with this, but it's been done very well. Not much to say really, other than YES -
OCR00983 - *YES* Xenogears 'The Lost City of Shevat'

Ya need to go to http://www.xgam.org/multimedia/music/ost/index.shtml and nab 05. Shebat, the Wind is Calling. Now on to my verdict... It's a very slowed down version of the original. It's not as different as I thought (I listened to the original afterwards) but it is still enough of an evolution for me. Nice sounds, calm and cool. This does need to be voted on by those more familiar with the original song however, as the 'original' I am comparing this to is a midi. YES -
Well so far all I've found out is that the music in this game was in midi. I'll see if I can get some more info (like a link to a midi or something like that).
-
Intro sounds sinister. Gets repetitive in the first half. Hmmm...the guitars and strings sound wrong with the song and each other, and there's not much else going on while they're playing either. This mix doesn't really sound finished to be honest. NO

OCR00990 - *YES* Final Fantasy 6 'Rachel's Gift'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Nice mix, quite atmospheric. The long, long rests at the beginning and the end are a little odd though. A well done mix. I particularly like the piano ending. YES -
OCR00982 - *YES* Sonic Adventure 'The Twinkle Park Classic'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This is good stuff. Everything I was going to say has already been said. But I'll say it anyway. Good sounds, I like the way that effects and good arrangement have been used to keep the listeners' interest, as this is a longish mix. Everything keeps changing, moving, progressing. Yes, it is a very happy sounding mix. YES -
Well first of all this is really short. There aren't many instruments here, but the texture is good nevertheless. The beat(s) are off at times, they have a completely different groove, doesn't work IMO. The fade out ending is inappropriate. This mix doesn't really go anywhere. NO
-
I wasn't really impressed with this in the beginning, but it does get better as the mix progresses. Now being a dance mix, I expect repetitiveness, but perhaps not on this scale. I haven't heard the orginal tune incidentally, and if this was an original song I would say that a melody, or lead part is missing. Sounds good, but needs more. I'm saying NO for the utter repetitiveness.
-
Well it sounds ok, although the arrangement doesn't really lead to anything. It's quite repetitve - it would have been nice to see this mix taken further in some way, it's too reserved. The ending is anti-climax. It's really not so bad, but it just dips into the NO category for me.
