  1. Something I've wondered about is mp3 bitrate. I've spent quite some time on certain private music torrent trackers and these days I have a hard time listening to anything below 192kbps. On one hand I can understand the 6mb filesize limit, on the other... what are production values worth if we're listening to a poor quality file?

  2. It's midday on Jan 1. Happy new year d00dz.

Perhaps a quick rundown on people's new years eves?

I went to a dumpy town with lots of drunks then slept in a seedy, dilapidated shack and woke to the sight of kittens in my shoes.

  3. Well for all the haters out there, keep in mind that it's a 'supplement'. It's not changing the actual OCR site or it's policies. If you like it, use it. If not, nobody's making you even look at it.

I for one would like to see it, as I'm sure it will reduce threads on the forum asking for particular kinds of mixes. (How many times have we seen "Mixes with vocals/Orchestral mixes/etc?)

The more community resources the better, I say.

  4. There's been plenty of good metal already discussed, so I'll skip that. =P

    Drum & Bass

London Elektricity - For quite some time LE worked as a live band, breaking many traditions and clichés of the genre. Check out the album Power Ballads.

High Contrast - Solid dancefloor dnb.

Nu:Tone - Smooth vocal dnb; the tracks featuring Natalie Williams = hot stuff. Very sexy.

(...Basically anything on Hospital Records =P)

    Breaks

Hybrid - Hybrid's music is a cinematic experience. An adventure. Listen to each album start to finish.

    Breakcore

Venetian Snares - If you're new to the genre, I recommend starting with the 2005 album Rossz Csillag Alatt Szueletett. It's a beautiful mix of hard, distorted breakbeats and melancholic string samples.

    Trip-hop

Portishead - Portishead can not be emphasised enough here. Dummy is one of my all time favourite albums.

Massive Attack - Blue Lines and Mezzanine are, in my opinion, their greatest albums. Must-listen.

Saltillo - A lesser-known artist in the field, but he makes some beautiful music, combining elements of trip-hop, orchestral music and drum & bass.

    Hip-hop (Australian hip-hop heads represent!)

Hilltop Hoods - These guys have slick lyrics and catchy beats. A good starting point for Australian hip-hop.

The Herd - These guys take things a bit more seriously, with highly political lyrics and interesting instrumentals. Many tracks are dnb-influenced, while others have varied instrumentation, such as cello and accordion.

Unkle Ho - Member of The Herd; has released two solo albums. Both are an aural collage, crafted from a variety of world-music sources.

    Progressive Trance

Above & Beyond - Their album Tri-State is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard. It's absolutely beautiful.

Vibrasphere - I think Vibrasphere originally started as a psytrance project, but lately things have been heading into prog territory, with several really peaceful downtempo tracks here and there. Very soothing stuff.

    Psytrance/Goa

Talamasca - If you're a fan of the likes of Infected Mushroom, 1200 Mics and Hallucinogen, then you'll like Talamasca. There's something really addictive about the pulsing basslines here.

Malice in Wonderland - To my knowledge they've only released one EP, but it's a real kicker. This stuff is so dark it'll eat your soul.

    Funk

Sound Tribe Sector 9 - These guys are renowned for their live performances and improvisation. They blend electronic sounds (I believe they use Ableton) with some really funky shit. It boggles my mind. Wow.

    Avant-Garde/Experimental

Estradasphere - Estradasphere's 'Hunger Strike' is perhaps the most exhilarating piece of music I've ever heard. These guys play an amazing hybrid of jazz/folk/metal/traditional/improvisation... their musicianship is unrivalled.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Metal with a violin and glockenspiel? A shrieking woman and a growling man? Yes please.

    Baroque

Johann Sebastian Bach - Fugue and Toccata in D minor. The Well-Tempered Clavier (48 Preludes and Fugues). Cello Suites. I really think listening to this kind of music helps remind us that music can be an artform and not just a commercial product.

    Romantic

Antonín Dvořák - Cello Concerto in B minor. Perhaps one of my favourite pieces written for cello.

  5. I've been playing PC FPS games solidly for about a year now, and I don't think I could go back to console FPS games... dual analog just doesn't cut it any more. I also like the convinience of being able to just start up a game immediately and be able to play online. I can go from chatting, to gaming in about 60 seconds. Perhaps if I had a tv near my PC or some other way of playing my consoles with my monitor, I'd use them more often.

  6. I suppose I am the only one who thinks that the term "Christmas haul" falls tragically short of including any notion that these are gifts people have given us...its not like we are going out fishing or something. Perhaps I am looking too much into it, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Oh I definitely agree. I don't think you're looking into it too deeply, but yeah.. we just have the obligatory annual thread to mention things frankly I guess. =)

  7. We have one of these threads every year and I haven't seen one yet, so here goes!

Post the loot you received for Christmas this year =P

    I received the following...

    SteelSound 5Hv2 gaming headset

Dvds... Black Books series, Rambo Trilogy, The Shining, Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast, The Police - Synchronicity Concert

    Cds... Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor; Massive Attack - No Protection; King Kong OST; Garbage - Garbage, Version 2.0, Beautiful Garbage; Midnight Oil - 20000 Watts RSL;

Tetris DS, shirts (with 'retro' designs, Tonka and Back to the Future), a little money

Presents aside, it's been a good Christmas. I've had parties with most of my family and will be having dinner with them all again tonight. :) Good to see everybody together.

  8. A new high-backed desk chair... the one I have at the moment is crappy and probably causing permanent lower back damage.

Some headphones... I'm thinking Sennheiser HD-555's, or SteelSeries 5v2 gaming headset.

    Stacks of CDs...

A few DVDs... StarGate SG-1, The X Files

Oh, and a legitimate copy of FL Studio would be nice.

Perhaps a new console, though I don't know whether I want a Wii/360/PS2. I play PC games mostly these days anyway.

  9. In the file menu, Action > Copy Range > Compressed (or Uncompressed) brings up a window with two sliders that cover the entire length of the CD. One sets the start for the rip, the other sets the end.

At the very left side of the sliders' range, the "Relative timepos" field will be a negative number. That's the pregap stuff, so set the start slider all the way left and the end slider where negative becomes positive, then hit okay.

Like I said, this makes my system hang. I just did a quick Google on it, and some drives (mine apparently included) can't read this pregap stuff. If yours can't either, I guess the simplest thing to do would be a line-in recording from a regular CD player.

    Ah thanks! It worked. =D

I'll just cut the couple of seconds silence off the end of the .wav, then convert to .mp3.

  10. I've been using EAC for a while now, and a few times I've noticed that the first track of a CD is in red, rather than black. I'm lead to believe this means there is a hidden track before track 1- if this is the case, how do I go about ripping it?

A quick google search and looking at the EAC FAQ didn't seem to tell me anything...
