  1. Hi to DJpretzel and the other OCR judges. I did a remix of a song from Final Fantasy VI and I thought I would share with you and submit it to OCRemix. You can download the ReMix here: (this is my own webspace, so it won't risk of getting deleted and the host has 99% uptime so if it go down it should be back up later) Here is the info about the ReMix -Name of game remixed: Final Fantasy VI -Name of individual song(s) ReMixed: Terra theme (first world map song) -I am a big techno/euro/trance music fan and I liked the Terra theme a lot in Final Fantasy VI for the SNES. In fact, it's my favourite song in the game, and the way it is arranged I thought I would make a Trance version of the song. I used MTV Music Generator on a Playstation emulator to make the song and Audacity to record it. It start very smooth, and after half a minute approximately the club beat start with all the techno/trance effects from the late 1990s (as the MTV Music Generator software date back in 1999). I love piano in trance so I thought I would go with piano with this ReMix. I hope you like it and that it deserves being added on OCRemix. I will look forward for your reviews and comments so I can improve it if needed. Here is my contact information: -ReMixer name: DJ Omnimaga -Real name: Kevin Ouellet -E-mail address: omnimaga@gmail.com -Website: http://omnimaga.org -Forum userid: 54053 And ocremix rocks! ----------------------------------------------------- http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=ff6 - "Tina" (ff6-201.spc) LIGHTNING ROUND! (stolen from The Wingless) *Decent, though a simplistic/by-the-numbers trance adaptation *Various sounds are imbalanced; beats and arpeggiated rhythms possibly dominate the soundscape too much *Arrangement isn't comprehensive to begin with, and simply repeats verbatim at 2:23 until 3:40/the end NO

Who could forget this memorable melody sparking you to action as you first exit Balamb Garden with Squall & Co? This is one of those songs that is permanently etched into my brain due to the countless hours spent grinding on the world map. This whole soundtrack is one of Uematsu's best imo, but I always liked the sense of mystery and comfort in the repetition of the notes this particular song evoked. I figured the best way to get it out of my head would be to create my own unique interpretation. I present to you "Wanderlust". This is a wistful piano-centric orchestral arrangement I composed of the song "Blue Fields" from Final Fantasy 8, originally written by my favorite composer Nobuo Uematsu. Blue Fields can be heard anytime you are traversing about the world map, and is instantly recognizable, catchy, and just gets you in the mood to jaunt about, explore and adventure around the captivating world of FF8. The version used in the game is much more up-tempo and has a march-like cadence to it. For my re-interpretation, I wanted to keep with the piano theme, and slow it down into a plodding, gently developing, brooding, contemplative, and introspective piece. To do this, I first recorded the piano part with light reverb. After that, I duplicated the piano part so it plays twice in succession, as the song itself is fairly short, and I wanted enough time to experiment with it. I wanted to have 2 different variations of the theme to keep it evolving, so for the first part, I focused on orchestral arrangements with countermelodies and soft ambiance. For the second play through, I stripped down some of the ambiance and created a 2nd piano part using a mellow grand piano preset on my Kawai ES7 digital piano and added delay and reverb effects. I then just improvised for about 2 hours with the song on a never-ending loop until I came up with something I liked as an accompaniment melody and laid that track down, which I think added a very ethereal, dreamy quality. I purposely didn’t follow the exact melody of the song for the second half with the improvised piano, and made it a bit more discordant and harsh. The song features 44 tracks, including 4 piano live recordings, violins, ambient textures, pizzicato style strings overlaid on the left hand of the piano to give it that poppy, airy sound like it has in the game…and mostly floaty soundscapes I created messing around with synths and using the wonderful creation engine that is Omnisphere Spectrasonics 2. Hope you enjoy!

It is pretty swell if you ask me." ------------------------------------------------------ http://www.vgmusic.com/music/computer/microsoft/windows/HoMM2Grass.mid - "Grass" Thanks for providing the source. Nice atmosphere for the intro with some personalized expansionist ideas compared to the original. A stock drum flurry at :33 signaled the beetz coming in at :39. Once the melody kicked in at :52, the melody and countermelodic writing was unfortunately basically used verbatim from :15 of the source. Woodwind sample used for the lead was alright, though piercing. The countermelodic stuff didn't cut through the beatwork at all. Orchestral stabs from 1:19-1:22 were completely cheesy and sounded completely glued into the mix; didn't sound like it was remotely in the same soundscape, causing a drastic disconnect. Then repeated the same stuff as before with some additional stuff in the background. Soundfield was getting pretty crowded and piercing up until 1:49. The last section was decent, but merely a placeholder for a poorly executed fadeout. You had a lot of instances where there was too much treble going on and things were crowded and loud; gotta revisit the sound balance. Arrangement was too brief and underdeveloped, the beatwork itself just repeats over and over for the entire track once it comes in, and most of the instrumentation was pretty flat. Needs a lot more substance, but a good first try that shows potential. NO
  4. Hello there; my remixer name is Sukotto42, and my real name is Scott Hannay(http://www.myspace.com/scotthannay, my original music site), and I've got a track here for you that I did a little while back, and just went over and re-EQed, re-tooled, re-whatever. Anyway, it's a medley from Mega Man 3 for the NES. It goes first from the title screen into Shadow Man, into Snake man, then the boss battle. After that, it goes to the 2nd half of the credits music to close it out. Oh yeah, and it's all crunchy prog-rock. I chose to do this because the first MIDI work I ever did was transcribing all the music from the game note-for-note, like 5 years ago or something. Kind of a labor of love! Thanks for your time! -Sukotto42 Scott Hannay

  7. OMG! HEAR IS REMICKS!Q HEAR IT.! Well originallly (check out that triple L action!) my plan was to only submit my VG arrangements to OCR in Chronological order. Going back through my drawer of VG arrangments, I decided that I wouldnt be submitting everything. (at least not in its current state. Expect something about wizards wearing armor in the near future reproduced and near-completely retooled from its currentform.) So yeah, My Mother, Starfox, Earthbound, Kid niki the radical ninja, and gauntlet remixes all get the axe, unless I retool those later as well like I am with my classified remix debut of a cutting edge guitar synth that isnt pubblic yet. ) Anyways, I was listening to this track and pondering the question of why I hadnt submitted this to OCR yet. The answer was that the other older mixes were holding it back. givven the state of the judges panel, if I was to release this in the future, after I had submitted newer stuff, this one wouldnt have a chance at getting posted but for a direct post. it is not my intention to create music for no one to listen to, and for this reason I will only be submitting my remixes in chronological order. And no, I do not believe in the whole take it back and re-work it philosophy when put in the context of "this was the best I could produce at the time." this is a piece of my musical history, and should have a chance to go where everything else I have done does. Those other remixes are awesome, but a little too straight lace for OCR's standards, and the panel doesnt seem to give yes's anymore to music from remixers who have beben posted unless there is a signifigant pop/indy factor, a half dozen atonal melodies and 7 reclassification of mode and genre. Oh yeah obligatory Key changes are in. Gripes aside, they are an excellent control method, but i think they need to be more lax and really lower the bar. it turns off too many new mixers to music when they are told that they need to go back and redo it. If its a first time newb mix its one thing, but when there is signifigant musical value, bbut the production is flawed, its not fair to the Joe anybody who doesnt know where to get the latest and greatest or best free stuff. Enough ramble. This is a remix of Shademan from Mega man seven, dating back to PRC26. Compyfox was too busy to balance and master this track for me . But he is still my mix monkey. For those of you into MM7. Shademan was the level where if you held down A on the controller during the intro screen, hidden stage music would play. the music was from Ghosts and Goblins. So if you were wondering why the hell, well now you know why the hell. also, there is the normal shademan music all over the place in this obviously. Be gentle, this one is oldish and wears Depends. New obscure game mixes to follow soon! Yay! Maybe not, silly 3 week waiting period before next submits. Production Notes FYI included in ID3tag comments section: Excerpt: " !! WEASELS IN MY PANTS~!!" FEAR!!!!!!! PS: Shael Riley for OCR judge 2006, Kamoh for OCR Janitor 2001 PSS: this mix will not pass the judging guidelines at OLR.

  10. Email sub file FINALF~1.MP3 Remixer Name: Tepid Real Name: Philip Schwan, but let's just say Phil E-mail: davidmschwan@aol.com or phswan@hotmail.com UserID: vergo890 Game Remixed: Final Fantasy VIII Song Remixed: Fisherman's Horizon Comments: This started as a messaround with the Fisherman's Horizon melody. I know in the real song (a beautiful song indeed) there a lot of chord changes and a lot of jazzy chords. I tried to picture the song as an acoustic ballad and then decided later to make it a rock ballad aswell. I used some pretty strangly voiced chords to base the melody around, so it would still retain the relaxed feel and wouldn't be too awkward to play. So I'm very pleased with the results, I think it's the best song I've yet recorded on Cakewalks Home Studio 2002. I've played all of the instruments live aside from the drums (sequenced on FL3.5 demo ) and the strings, from my PSR-240 (cheap stuff). Instead of playing the guitar into a mike from my amp, I tried playing it straight into my computer with a nice reverb sound, and I think it sounds better than my previous attempts to record live guitar. The song took one full day to record. The drums took another full day to sequence (I gotta get me a better program for those) and it took me a couple hours to polish the song off. Once I get going with a song I can't stop, this has been pointed out by my mother who says: 'If you spent as much time studying as you did recording, you'd be in Harvard!' Meh, only nerds go to Harvard...*turns on PS2 for another 8hr sesson of Final Fantasy until eyeballs begin to bleed*

  14. Krispy Fallthrough This is a remix of Aquatic Ambience from Donkey Kong Country. I have been listening to an increasing amount of cinematic scores and I think the influence shows through here. I wanted to take this well known theme and portray in a unique way becaise we have all heard this song regurgitated a million times (my personal favorite parts being the beginning and end). People have commented that it doesnt feel finished at the end, and I agree, but after running into numerous sampler troubles I decided it was best to just move on . name: Krispy email: Krispy3000@gmail.com
  15. Mmmm, different enough that I think we should evaluate as an addition, not a replacement. - djp title: Terranigma Blue (Shooting Star Mix) OC ReMix artist: Ziwtra year: 2004 game: Terranigma original: Evergreen --- Not sure what you want to do with this one... the story is that I got my hands on some non-free tracking software called renoise (best $45 i've ever spent!). To learn effects, mixing, etc. I decided to remaster my first remix Blue since I was never happy with that one. But instead of just mixing it cleaner I ended up starting over and going in a different direction with it. So I'll leave it up to you whether this should replace the old mix or whether it's a different one altogether--either way is fine by me. About the song... My first remix of this tune went for a "rainforest" atmosphere you might say (not very original either... calliope, conga, rain and bird sound fx) while in this one I wanted to get a synth sound that reminded me of stars... Hopefully later in the song you'll hear the "shooting stars" that I was going for. I also went for a more downtempo chilled feel. By the way... love the new site, truly excellent work. Hopefully I'll be sending you some more mixes this summer before I return to school and work my ass off. : ) yh

  19. Russell wants to use a fallthrough on this mix. Since not much is going on in the panel right now, I thought this might be an ok time to do it? Song: The Temple of the Magi Handle: Russell Cox Game: The Magic of Scheherazade URL: **removed** Comments: "This is an arrangement of the temple theme from the Magic of Scheherazade. It's Baroque with string orchestra, solo viola, and a spinet (not harpsichord, though it sounds similar). This is my most "classical" sounding piece so far and one of my personal bests. 85% of this song is original due to the amount of counterpoint and work that had to go into it to make it sound "authentic" (i.e. the three parts sound fluid and not jerky, not as though two composers supplied the material). The only thing untouched is the line in the violins for the first eight bars (and whenever it returns in the song). It's in standard Rondo form (for those of you theorists out there) and follows ABACABA. I didn't want a lot of reverb (and this is still too much) as it's supposed to represent a chamber feel, but since the sections of the strings I have are too large I just had to make due -- so if it's too 'dry' for your tastes you'll just have to deal with it. Yes, I know the violas are further back than everything else -- that's the way I intended it to be." Edit: Russ got back to me and confirmed it was track 21 of the nsf file.

  21. ReMixer & real name: Eino Keskitalo e-mail: ReMixer: Jorito e-mail: Name of game arranged:Secret of Mana Name of Arrangement: Together We Will Stand Name of original track: Together Always Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA-D1Tf6H6Q MP3 link: FLAC link: Jorito's notes: Eino was one of the very last people to claim a track and to check in. Since we've done quite a few collaborations already, I liked what I was hearing and Eino was quite strapped for time, I offered to help out. The whole process reminded me of the compo tracks we did, it's a very organic workflow and cranking out an enjoyable track in just a few days with a crazy deadline breathing down your neck is pretty much what we're used to. This time around, my contributions were mostly in production and making some arrangement changes, but I also was able to sneak in some extra parts to spice things up. The foundation that Eino laid was also a great bed to do some creative experiments. I mean, how often do you get the chance to act as Sage Joch and steal his lines from the game script AND get to work on that one single track where using bagpipes actually makes sense? Turned out rather fun and interesting and maybe a bit eccentric in a good way. Eino's notes: I have a funny experience with Secret of Mana. My SNES-owning friends acquired the US release as an import, and sure, it's was a gorgeous action-RPG, it had multiplayer, and the ring inventory UI was very neat. I got to borrow the SNES later and played the game with another friend up until a point, where the dragon swoops in to rescue the party and at that point (perhaps due to exhaustion of playing it so much), we somehow decided this turn of events was super lame and quit. I played the game through later on my own, but it still did not have the impact for me that its reputation would warrant. I guess I never really "got" the game! I’d be happy to give it another go with a friend or two at some point though, perhaps the penny would drop this time. What is unquestionably great about the game is of course the music. The compositions are excellent and unique, greatly adding to the game’s identity. The tracks are also very craftily tailored to the SNES’s sound capabilities. This music is good. Even if the game is not necessarily an all-time favourite for me, I still sing a lullaby based on the music (and plot!) to my kids in the evening. It’s also so good I claimed (in various collab formations) four tracks in total during the project’s long lifespan. It’s also so good I was only able to finish this one (the bar is high), and when I say “I finished it”, I mean Jorito did. It definitely wouldn’t have been without his generous offer for help! The fun thing when I was claiming this track (thanks to nudging from Jorito), even at the end, there were still 3-4 fantastic tracks left for claiming. I kept listening for them, getting various ideas for each, and finally settled on Together Always, not necessarily because it was my favourite of the originals left, but I just got a couple of fun arrangement ideas for it. One was to play the thing on the guitar. There was an alteration to the rhythm to the first lead riff that formed in my head quite naturally with the guitar in mind. The other was to mess with the time signature (like I often do), and in the chorus there’s a small gap at the end of the rhythm I would cut shorter while keeping the flow of the rhythm still pretty natural (to me at least). After the idea stage, the execution progressed as follows: - figure out the parts on the guitar and bass - realise its way too fast for my skill level and will require recording in tiny tiny bits (f.e. four notes of an arp at the time) - let this affect the arrangement, f.e. split the arp between two guitars - make a mock-up of the arrangement structure with drums + chip sounds - record guitar and bass in the tiny tiny bits - improvise some stuff - forget to record some parts - record some parts incorrectly despite first transcribing them correctly - spend 3x more time for timing and pitch fixes than recording - instead of re-recording (which I didn’t have the opportunity for anyway), use the chip-style sounds to fill in for missing bits - stretch out the arrangement via good ol’ copy & paste, add a chip solo to vary things up, don’t quite finish the ending - send stuff to Jorito - magic happens - track is ready! The particularly fun aspect of the process was that I sent a fairly dry and minimalistic track with drums, bass, guitars and a couple of simple synth tracks to Jorito, and he gives it a total maximisation make-over, including vocoded vocals and a bagpipe. Once everything was in place, the final round of mixing (which he executed, I just opined) to chisel out the excess and decide what should be the main feature of each part was quite fun and exciting. I think what emerged is a particularly fun, even joyous track, that fits the original but puts it in a crazy overdrive mode. that's all, cheers
  22. I'm not hearing any clipping, though the guitar has a lot of distortion. It does get to be a bit much at times, though I'm not too thrown off by it. The arrangement is straightforward as the others mentioned, with some stronger interpretation at the end. I would have liked things to get to the really cool part sooner in the mix, but I think the first half has its place. Aside from the violin being really stiff, the performances are on point. Definitely not a source that I would have expected much from, but you worked some good magic here. YES
