djpretzel
Game: Chrono Cross Original Track: "Star-Stealing Girl" Title: "First the Stars, Now the Beats" Remixer: Justin of the Jungle URLs: Stream in wma or asf: Hopefully, one of the mp3 links will work. If not, you can always stream the song. Unfortunately, it would be low(er) quality, which would definitely not help me out. I feel rather confident about this remix. I feel it's my best to date. Remixes get better and better at OCR, so I've been struggling to improve myself. Thanks for listening. Protricity
note: you may have to download it directly http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jotj/files/ jotjssgd6.mp3 MM... CC.... I liked the original, but I really dont like how its played here. Its a nice peaceful original, but here there is heavy D&B drums playing against synthy guitars. Its very jumpy and harsh, but doesnt seem to work with such a peacful, quiet original. I think if the beats were something softer and the guitar was less of a synthy metalic guitar and more of a nylon or something this would have been easier on the ears. Other than that, it doesnt stray too far from the original except in percussion. NO
analoq
this mix is quite thin sounding. I do like the lead instrument, I don't know if it's supposed to be a guitar, it's a plucking sound made by use of comb filters*, a synthetic abstraction of a plucked instrument, but not any in particular that I can tell. Sounds like a cross between a harpsicord and a clavinet. anyways, as I said, this is thin sounding and lacking the development department. this track does not go anywhere and that makes it very boring. no *or possibly FM, but it really does sound like basic physical modelling with comb filters. m68030
lead sounds very much to me like the "pluck" machine in Buzz. I belive there is also one in FL. It's a neat instrument in the lowest register. I used it in my submition in the 'radical dreamers flood'. I'm not too keen on the instrument choice of this remix. the broken nature of the drums feels improper against the smoothness of the strings and the complex harmonics of the lead. granted it works beat wise, compositionally it feels ackward to me. Not being familiar with the original, I can't comment on how much it varies in arrangement. major issues I have are that the characteristic sound of the Pluck machine tends to cause some of the chords to sound like clashing notes. Past that the track never seems to grow past the pluck lead, string swells, and drum track. It never really goes anywhere. An interesting listen, but just doesn't feel cohesive enough to catch my attention. NO
Disco Dan
Wow. The original is really nice. Don't think I've ever heard it before now. Ok, well the vocal sample is just a bit creepy, but the rest is nice. Well, compared to the original, this pretty much lacks all emotional quality that the first one had. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing because interpretation is a good thing, (in my opinion). In this case, I think it's the overall quality and lack of variety that kills it. The drums don't actually bother me as they're not SO intrusive as some have said. But the synths limit the variety that is possible. It's like you keep expecting something more and it never comes. so... NO And yes, FL does have that synth as a default sound as well. D
