So I don't even know how to describe what's going on, either scientifically or culturally. All I know is that this song has the effect I'd like to imitate:

From 0:00 to 0:15, and then again at 1:54. I think it's meant to simulate an old school radio or gramophone. But most importantly, I'd like to know how he did it. If Snap himself will answer, or if someone else who has a pretty good idea would instead, it would really help me out.

I don't know exactly how he did it, but it just sounds like some pink noise over the top of some high and low-end filtering with maybe a bit of a vinyl sound on the top.

Vinyl noises (probably sampled from somewhere, not generated) + cutting out lots of low end and some high end, putting some stuff in mono... sounds easy to me.

You could always check out izotope's Trash plugin - it's my goto for crackly sounds and skips.

izotope's got a plugin called 'vinyl' that might be what you're looking for. alternatively, Speakerphone might be it.
