Melodyne Editor - Beta

So, many of you may have heard about the new Melodyne Editor that was first talked about nearly a year and a half ago. Well, they finally released the first beta for it and I can honestly say that I'm completely blow away. I've played with it a bit and it really does work! I threw in a jazz organ loop that had some cool chords in it.

Nifty eh? This really will make for some creative uses of loops as well as song writing with your own recordings. I'm pretty stoked!

Can this pull instruments out of mixed tracks as well or does the mashing of frequencies make that difficult/impossible?

You can try but you'd get mixed results. It was mainly designed to work with single instruments. The software isn't intelligent enough to know the difference between a guitar and a piano playing the exact same pitch. If they were playing different pitches, it may be able to do it but that's not what the tech was designed for. It also doesn't work well on heavily effected instruments. Stuff like delay and reverb will caused mixed results.

It's refreshing. When most products are released/announced they're hyped as "revolutionary" or something new when they're usually a reiteration. We've had pitch correction since the 80s, automated correction since the 90s, but DNA is a tool that genuinely allows you do something you couldn't do before.

The tech doesn't work flawlessly, but it works well enough to open up a lot of possibilities. Salutes, Celemony; I've been having a lot of fun with this.

Ah, I was wondering a while ago when this would finally come out.

I actually was half expecting them to fall on their face with this update - it just seemed too much of a technological leap to work well right away.

Really gotta give it a try now.

Bumping this because I finally got a chance to try out the beta. I've been extremely impressed. I'm using it right now on a stereo piano and violin recording (real-world use for me) and I haven't run across any wrong notes yet in either instrument that it hasn't been able to fix. In one case, it found a piano note that I thought had been omitted by the pianist. Turns out it had just gotten lost in a chord, and I was able to slide it to the correct time. I'm looking forward to seeing how well it handles tempo editing.

The only downside I've seen so far is that it's extremely sluggish on my system. There's a lot of interface lag, and it took about half an hour to calculate the editing data for my 8 minute file (the interface lag isn't related to the filesize; it behaves the same way for smaller files). On the bright side, even though it frequently freezes up while it's thinking, it hasn't actually crashed on me yet.
