Recording Setup

Recommended Posts

Hey, since Apple computers have been using Intel architecture for a few years, it is possible to cleanly install both Windows and Macintosh. I used to use a mac to record, but now I use a pc. Windows is pretty buggy with cubase, so I tried dual booting mac, and let me tell you, it was difficult! Since it's different for every computer setup, it's hard to know what options to select during installation. After two full days of working on it, I finally finished the task. Whenever I start up my system, it boots to windows, but if I press F10, it boots to mac.

Even on a pc, using a recording interface with the mac os is so much better! I've been recording for hours and haven't experienced any dropout or artifacts. Macintosh runs flawlessly, and in fact, my MIDI and recording latency went from 11.6ms to 8ms just by switching to mac! Since 8ms is fine I haven't tried to tweak it, but I bet I could get it down to 4 or 5ms. If anyone is interested in trying this on your own systems, let me know and I'll post all the best links. Or google "kalyway" and go from there!

Oh, some interesting information- I took a gamble and ordered the Ion IED05 USB drumkit.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ION-USB-Electron...item1e589ec3a3

It is a USB kit with six velocity-sensitive and durable pads, plus two pedals for a total of 8 channels. The cymbal pad can be choked and the left pedal switches the hi-hat channel when you press it. It's made by Alesis. The reviews I read on the kit stated that it was underfeatured and came with crappy samples, which is true, but they never mentioned that you can connect it to any vst-compatible recording software and run it through your drum vsti! You can even connect it to drumkit from hell! The thing costs $160, and for a recording drummer, that's an unbelievable price for what this product is capable of.
