saltlick
I have been listening to ''100 best film classics'' and 100 best opera, beethoven, concertos. and so on. I also noticed in a Classical Music forum they had top 200, 100 and 50 lists. I would like to put together a ''100 Greatest Video Game Music for Orchestra''. So that means any VGM for orchestra from soundtracks or albums. I will no doubt miss a lot out if it was up to me. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The order of he tracks doesn't matter it's just 100 greatest. I hope people can use this list as a quick way to hear the greatest vgm if they are new to it or like classical music and film music. dannthr
Video games are such a young media that I'm not sure if there are even 100 GREAT orchestral soundtracks. Some of the best of video game music wasn't even for orchestra. When I teach music appreciation, I divide video game music into 4 or 5 eras: hard-wired, chip-tune, MIDI, CD-Rom, Streaming Audio. There's lots of game music that could have been written for orchestra, but you don't really get it until CD-Rom/Streaming Audio.
Rozovian
A different approach to the question would be to find the 100 best orchestral recordings of video game tracks, be it from the era of Space Invaders or from five minutes ago. VGL and Distant Worlds and their like would count. Ideally for something like this, the 100 best tracks would be chosen (hopefully not the 100 most popular), arranged for orchestra, and recorded. That's not likely to happen any time soon, at least not on that scale. Cool idea, I wish I was able to help, but I'm not up to date on the AAA soundtracks of today. pokemoneinstein
I agree that best recordings is a better choice. Best songs to be played by an orchestra is so broad and incredibly hard to judge, especially considering that a source and its orchestral arrangement can be something else entirely. Nabeel Ansari
Orchestral version of FF7 battle theme. (you guys know he's actually talking about tracks, not entire soundtracks right?) EDIT: Never mind, it's just dannthr I'm talking to.
