So they were even doing less work than I thought. No wonder they wanted out!

I have my suspicion that this points to Valve Corp. slowly leaving the software game, and being focused entirely on digital distribution and their gamble for hardware space.

They're still pretty heavily invested in the ongoing development of Dota 2 and to a lesser degree TF2, not to mention whatever unannounced games they still have brewing.

At the same time, those two are games you don't need a lot of manpower to seriously develop in. Especially TF2 at this stage.

I honestly don't believe we will EVER see a sequel to Half Life. Not for at least ten years or more.

Heck, they've probably painted themselves into a corner with the story, and are afraid of not living up to expectations. Or maybe the new Source engine will be ringing in the next game in the series.

If it happens, I'll eat a hat. But I don't think I'm the only one that has given up waiting for a new Half Life game.
