OC ReMix team,

Good evening! Mazedude here. Dang, it's been a while since my last remix. I've still been making music these past few years, but it's been original work for a series of projects that still have a ways to go, so, more to come on those later. For now, enjoy a new "just for fun" track!

Description:

It's been quite a long time since my last tracker homage. Remixing a game theme while at the same time paying a nod to one of the trackers that inspired young Mazedude as I learned the art form... I love doing that, and it's a lot of fun to work with the oldschool sounds and samples.

Recently I was listening to some of those homages and realized that I'd never done one to the artist known as Scirocco, which felt like a shame, as he was one of the first trackers that I was introduced to as a teen. Well, problem solved with a new Rygar remix! I took what I always thought of as "the cloud level" and have reworked it in the style of "Full Sail," a classic track by Scirocco. Clouds and robots in the sky meet water music. Enjoy!

Wow, this source theme isn't catchy at all, so I'm certainly intrigued to discover how it got its hooks into Chris. :-D

What an impressive concept in terms of adapting this for the instrumentation and mood of "Full Sail" (including the crucial shakuhachi). I'm just floored at how much more melodious this rendition was, with great beats and textures surrounding this slowing down of the theme. This track's not sharp at all, yet it's so vibrant. Amazing stuff from a true master!

Thanks for the comparison track. I needed it to know whether the radical swells in the sustained notes were an intentional homage to something. It seems they are not, which is an issue, because they're really unpleasant to listen to. They're also too quiet for a lead; the percussion, bass, and effects are all sitting on top of it. When the leads are in their long, quiet attack or decay phases, I sometimes can't hear them at all.

The arrangement is otherwise really cool, and I really enjoyed the approach. Feels weird to be NOing a Mazedude remix, but here we are. Flatten the envelope on those leads out and push them farther into the front of the mix and this'll be in a great place.

NO (resubmit)

what a weird-looking waveform. heavily offset.

boy, what a love-it-or-hate-it sound initially. the lead's long attack is certainly a choice. i don't care for it at all, and it does sometimes get buried. the backing parts have some really neat ideas going on too. there's a lot of little blurbs and bleeps that are neat to keep discovering as i go through it.

there's a bit of an sfx break in the middle at like 2:06, and then we're back at it with some squelchy bass. this section sounds very similar to the opening albeit in a higher key and with the bass synth under it. there's a short build with the B theme, and then at 3:00 we're back to the A theme but with some more countermelodic content this time. the stutter synth here sounds great to give the very verby background some structure. 4:01 is a big build that essentially goes to the end and that's it.

i think i land on the other side of the fence from MW here. the rest of the mix is solid and the arrangement is great, and i don't think those leads are really enough for me to NO this.

Really surprised to see a NO vote on a Mazedude track, so let's see what happened...

I do hear what MindWanderer is saying, and could see how it would register as a personal annoyance, but after listening to this on repeat 2 or 3 times, it clearly feels like an intentional choice. I do wonder why it was mixed so far into the background, but the actual volume swells feel totally fine.

That stylistic quibble aside, we've got some classic Mazedude tracker action and I'm totally here for it. Chris' submissions always introduce me to textures and sounds I've never heard before. The groove is trance-inducing, with a very expressive bassline against a hypnotic breakbeat/trip-hop rhythm that evolves just enough over the course of nearly 5 minutes to keep me enthralled the whole time.

Send it!

Easy vote for me -- the stylistic choices don't bother me one bit, and this is a creative, well-executed arrangement. Now, I'm a sucker for the oldschool tracker/keygen sound (cTrix, Fearofdark, etc. are some of my favorite artists), so you're getting a bit of personal bias here, but regardless, I think it's easily within boundaries for a post-able arrangement. Overall sound is clean, the link to the source is there, love the concept. Far more enjoyable than the original, for sure. No need to expound further -- we've gotten good pushback from MW and good counterpoints from other Js, so no need to drag it out IMO.
