Riparian Rhythms

Chimpazilla's comments:

This remix began with my wanting to write a track in ambient jungle style.  I've never done one like that, and looking on Splice I found some Serum jungle presets that sounded so amazing that I had to do it right away.  I only had to think for a moment about what source to remix:  Lakebed Temple from Twilight Princess.  I always loved that theme, it's so weird, haunting and totally engaging.  The goal was to create a remix that captured that haunting feeling through the recreation of the big chords, while being totally upbeat and melodic rather than spooky, making it sound humongous, super groovy, and of course filling it to the brim with ear candy.

As usual, I sent my first little concept wip to Wes right away.  He instantly loved it.  He said "This one has to be finished, and I have ideas for it already!"  I ended up doing the bulk of the arrangement in just a few days, as I did on my previous submission called "Down," and Wes sent me a huge pack of unique elements to add wherever I thought they fit.  This style of working together with Wes seems to be very productive and leads to an excellent track full of fun, unique sounds and writing.  Nearing completion, I sent him the current wip with no outro, and Wes said he had a wild idea for an outro and asked if he should try it.  Of course he should!  What he did was so unique, so cool, and so beautifully executed, and it was a breeze to transition it onto the end of the track, completing it perfectly.

Emunator's comments:

Another month, another collab with Kris! We're getting good at this. She absolutely led the charge here, and I just went into "Emunator Splice Pack" mode where I rendered out dozens of fills, melodic layers, and textures for her to pick and choose from. The original concept came together so quickly and already sounded so tight. My biggest contribution here is the outro, where I channeled my inner DJ Shadow and took a hard left turn into trip-hop territory. 10/10 collab, as always!

Oh snap, jungle! Definitely never would have expected this genre from either of you, which is a kick and half given how long we've all been working together. :-D

I've got a soft spot for this genre because of Liquid Neon's old ReMixes; it's wonderful hearing this genre executed with an unprecedented level of sheen around here. This source tune was perfect for it!

P.S. "It's pronounced 'Bouquet'!" :-)

super weird original.

opens with some rich pads and a few percussive elements. the three-note motif is present right away. 0:31's beat is fun, and the following varieties of beats in the intro all have a fun, curious feel to them. the main body of the work starts at 0:54, as the melody's carried by deep tones and the drums kick in with all sorts of fun ideas. i particularly like the bass synth that keeps burbling up between some of the melodic ideas.

2:02's a break complete with vox samples and off-beat percussive elements, and that iconic Chimpa 'woo' sample that is always so unexpected. melody's back at 2:47 and there's some new long-lfo synths handling the melodic elements this time around.

3:32 is emu's outro and it's a big shift, but an interesting one. jumping off the high-energy train into a wall of half-formed jello is certainly one way to slow down. we get the three-note motif one last time and it's done.

this is a fun blow from start to finish! and i agree with LT, the polish on this is superb. excellent work.

Small textural sources with very little melodic content always feel like they would be a challenge to arrange to me.  I'm always pleasantly surprised when artists take them and get so much development and growth from them. It's a testament to your creativity to get so much here. Kudo's on the expansive development and growth throughout while keeping us tethered to the ambience and the 3-note motif from the original.

The bass is softer then I would expect from Chimpazilla, but it's still supportive and present. Just lacking some fullness that could fill the soundscape even more. The jungle/breakbeats are handled well, and fit the rest of the ambient textures very nicely.

The morph into the closing section at 3:48 is handled nicely, but it's strange to suddenly have a much more rigid rhythmic structure when it felt more fluid and organic earlier on. That's not a knock at all on the overall success of the track because in the end it's a nice listen and once again an improvement on a strange and minimal source tune.
